She grew up playing the violin in addition to singing. She sang the role of Zerlina in a school production of "Don Giovanni" when she was only 13. She attended the conservatory in Cologne, and joined the theater in Gelsenkirchen, before moving on to a larger venue in Bonn. In 1999, she won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
