A sterling lineup of stars and filmmakers have been set to be honored at the Critics Choice Association’s seventh annual Celebration of Black Cinema & Television, which is set for December 9 at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

Among those being recognized are stars of 2024’s most acclaimed and anticipated films including Regina King, John David Washington, Cynthia Erivo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jharrel Jerome and The Fire Inside breakout Ryan Destiny. On the TV side, honorees include Natasha Rockwell, Wendell Pierce and Michael Rainey Jr. Filmmakers Steve McQueen and Malcolm D. Lee among other luminaries will also be receiving awards.

Tyler Perry, Regina King, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and “The Best Man’s” Malcolm D. Lee will be honored at the Critics Choice Association’s seventh annual Celebration of Black Cinema and Television.

Actor and comedian Jay Pharoah, best known for “Saturday Night Live” and his recent comedy special “Jared,” will host the gala on Dec. 9 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The ceremony will air on Starz in January 2025. It will then be televised on Ktla and shown nationwide on select Nexstar stations through the month of February in honor of Black History Month.

Perry will be presented with the Icon Award, celebrating his body of work. In addition to his upcoming Netflix film “The Six Triple Eight”, Perry has helmed 24 feature films, 20 stage plays, 17 television shows and penned two New York Times bestselling books, in addition to establishing the 330-acre Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

Regina King, Steve McQueen and Cynthia Erivo are among the honorees for the 7th annual Celebration of Black Cinema & Television, which will be hosted by Jay Pharoah and take place at Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles on Dec. 9, 2024. The Critics Choice Association released the full slate of recipients on Thursday.

As previously announced, Tyler Perry will receive the Icon Award for this career achievements. Joining him are King, who recently starred in Netflix’s Shirley Chisholm biopic “Shirley”; McQueen, director of the Apple TV + WWII drama “Blitz”; Erivo, soon to appear in Universal’s “Wicked”; and many others known for their excellent work.

On the very first episode of Power created by Courtney Kemp and executive produced by rapper-turned-tv mogul Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson back in June 2014, there was no way of knowing that the kid in the nice penthouse apartment asking his mother Tasha (Naturi Naughton) if his father James St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), who spoke fluent Spanish, could “hook up” his Spanish homework as she served breakfast was on his way to becoming a drug kingpin. At that point, the young Tariq didn’t even know his father was himself a kingpin known on the streets as Ghost (Hardwick). And that his mother also knew. Michael Rainey Jr. was just a few months from turning 14. Now a decade later, just over a week after turning 24, he’s closed out another series.

When Power Book II: Ghost premiered Sept. 6, 2020, the pandemic had put the whole country and world on a life-turning timeout.

Power Book II: Ghost has wrapped on Starz, but Tariq’s story could continue. Rumors of a possible spin-off have been floating around for some time now, and staR Michael Rainey Jr. addressed those rumors in a new interview with Deadline.

Power Book II: Ghost season four powered its way to a new viewership record on Starz. The network reports that the critically acclaimed drama averaged 10.5 million multiple-platform viewers 90 days post-premiere. In addition, season four episode eight showed a 6% increase over episode seven and took the #1 spot among cable programs in Black households in four major cities.

The season’s final two episodes will air on September 27th and October 4th.

The final season of Power Book II: Ghost will go down as the most watched show ever on Starz.

The drama, which is headed toward its series finale on Oct. 4, is averaging 10.5 million viewers across all platforms, measured for 90 days post-premiere. (Several years ago, Starz noted that season five of Ghost’s predecessor, Power, averaged 10.8 million viewers, but over a longer span of time than 90 days.)

The Power franchise, which encompasses four series, has set a number of ratings records for Starz. The flagship series displaced Spartacus as Starz’s most watched show at the time back in 2015 and continued to roll up big audiences over the course of its run. Ghost, Book III: Raising Kanan and Book IV: Force — which notched the biggest opening weekend for any series premiere in the channel’s history — have also pulled in strong viewing numbers over their runs.

Power Book II: Ghost has scored a record audience at Starz ahead of the anticipated Season 4 finale.

The new season is averaging 10.5M multi-platform viewers per episode in the first 90 days since Season 4 premiered, according to data from the network. That’s an all-time high for the series.

Episode 8, which aired on September 20, delivered 6% audience growth week-over-week in the three days post-premiere, Starz said.

The series continues to index well with Black households, as Episode 8 was the top cable program among the demographic in key markets like Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles.

In fact, Season 4 Part 1 and 2 both debuted as the highest-rated cable program among Black households in their respective premiere weekends.

To date, the Power universe has amassed 1.6B hours watched, Starz said.

It’s the beginning of the end for Season 4, with the two-part finale kicking off September 27 at midnight Et on the Starz app and via linear at 8 p.

Mary J. Blige remembers the first time she got positive feedback for her acting. “When I was 7, I did a Christmas play in school, and the word from the other students and teachers was that me and this guy who was also in the play did very, very, very well,” she says. “It put something in me like, ‘Okay maybe I can really do this,’ and I always wanted to act [after] getting that feedback. At some point, I kind of left it alone and got into the music business.”

That was the central question lingering on our minds when the credits rolled on Power Book II: Ghost Season 4 Episode 6, and Diana was lying on the pavement with a panicked Tariq calling out for help.

Earlier this month, we learned that McMurray is currently in production on his first movie since The First Purge was released six years ago: the horror film Goons, which has The Exorcism‘s Chloe Bailey and Power‘s Michael Rainey Jr. in the lead roles. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the names of five more cast members. They are: Serayah McNeill (Empire), SteVonté Hart (Bel-Air), rapper Yg, J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley), and Tyler Lepley (Harlem). Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed.

All midseason finales don't need to go out with a massive cliffhanger. Or even a bang.

They just need to do enough to leave you wanting more.

Did the Last Power Book II: Ghost midseason finale pull that off? Yes and no.

This season of Power Ghost has been more hit-and-miss than we're used to, but even with some hours that weren't the best, the series continues to be one of the most entertaining on television.

And that's exactly what this hour was.

It may not have ended on a crazy cliffhanger that will keep us guessing until the show returns this fall, but it didn't need to. We'll still be coming back to see how this story finishes.

I actually walked away excited that no lives were left in the balance or some crazy...

Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray) and Diana Tejada (Latoya Tonodeo) helped create a whole new level of drama going into Season 4 of Power Book II: Ghost. Tired of being underneath Monet Tejada’s (Mary J. Blige) thumb, the diabolical duo enlist Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.) to kill their mother. Before he can pull the trigger, Tariq’s mother Tasha, does a drive-by hitting Monet and sending the siblings into a manhunt. After a couple of bullets, a video call, and some blackmail, Tariq was able to convince Noma to call off her kill order leaving the duo in distress. With Diana trying to navigate what course to take with her pregnancy and Dru solely focused on revenge, the siblings are on separate paths. “There’s a lot of cuts and bruises that have happened, and we don’t have the time to really dive into the root of the issue,...

This felt like an old-school episode of Power.

Ghost and Tommy, fresh off a betrayal, trying to figure out how to salvage their business, all while leery of everyone around them, and even each other.

But they figure it out and make a move that sets them up beautifully for the long run. Until something inevitably gets in their way and causes everything to fall apart again.

Now we know Power Book II: Ghost is a whole other animal, but this had a lot of old-school vibes to it, and we even got a Ghost and Tommy mention, which further makes my case!

We don't have to wonder if Power Book II: Ghost will be cancelled by Starz this time around. It's already been announced that the drama is ending and won't be back for a fifth season. Could this prequel be revived for a sequel someday? Stay tuned.

Starz’s Power Book IV: Force will conclude following the drama’s third season which is currently in production in Chicago. It’s lights out for Tommy (Joseph Sikora) and the gang but that doesn’t mean their stories are over.

As Deadline reported in March, Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch revealed plans to contain content costs by developing more new shows versus sustaining series longer as they become more expensive. The plan was implemented immediately as Starz announced the next day the development of a new prequel series Origin, following the Ghost (Omari Hardwick in the flagship series) and Tommy during their early years. The new show is similar to Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which centers on Power’s favorite foe, Kanan Stark (played by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) during his younger years.

Having first premiered in 2020, Power Book 2: Ghost is now in its fourth and final season, with episodes releasing weekly on Starz.

The show is a sequel to the long-running series Power starring the likes of Omari Hardwick and Lela Loren. Cast members who reprised their roles for Power Book 2: Ghost include Michael Rainey Jr. and Shane Johnson.

It's bittersweet knowing this is the last season premiere for Power Book II: Ghost, but boy, did they bring the heat for this final run.

Coming off a wild and deliciously twisted Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 Episode 10, the premiere picked up right where that finale left off, with Tariq and Brayden on the run and trying to figure out how they were going to keep their heads above water.

It's shaping up to be Tariq and Brayden against the world, but considering this is the Power universe, it's probably safe to assume they will throw a few curveballs our way before it's curtains on this special series.
