The doctor is back in! And our excitement for it borders on, well, The Irrational. The charisma factory that is Jesse L. Martin is back as Dr. Alec Mercer, a professor of behavioral science at a fictional D.C.-area university and in Season 2, he’s got crime and passion on his genius-level mind. Last week’s premiere picked up shortly after the Season 1 cliffhanger, which saw his ex-MI6 girlfriend Rose (Karen David) being abducted by a band of black-clad strangers, and Alec realized something is amiss and called in the troops: His FBI-agent ex-wife Marisa (Maahra Hill) and tech-savvy sister Kylie (Travina Springer), who recently joined the Feds as a consultant. As they pieced together who could have orchestrated the kidnapping, a surprisingly reckless side of the usually logical Mercer emerged. “[That is] where he becomes irrational,” says Martin of his character’s loyalty to a woman whose past could put his entire family at risk.

“The Irrational” Season 2 premiere wasted no time addressing the massive cliffhanger from its first season finale earlier this year, launching into an eventful installment that explored revenge.

It’s the episode we’ve all been waiting for — Stana Katic guest-starred as a cunning psychopath on Murder in a Small Town.
Murder in a Small Town Season 1 Episode 3 focused more on the case than Karl and Cassandra’s romance, partly because of having such a big-name actor.
Only pieces of their romantic relationship were shown this time, but the series dropped hints into Karl and Sid’s lives instead.
( Kailey Schwerman/ Fox) Which Sibling is More Psychotic?
I’m unsure who would win if the Strachan siblings had a contest to determine who was more psychotic. Zoe (Stana Katic) would probably win, but Benjamin (Ben Cotton) came close.
Murder in a Small Town has overdone these dueling sibling scenes in which one of them owes thugs money these past few episodes. It’s only interesting for so long.

The Irrational Season 2 is kicking off with quite the important case: What happened to Rose (Karen David)? Beyond that, there’s going to be plenty to explore emotionally for these characters. At the end of last season, Alec (Jesse L. Martin) got answers about the church bombing that left him scarred and has been so important for his ex-wife Marisa (Maahra Hill) as well. And now, Alec’s sister Kylie (Travina Springer) is working at the FBI alongside Marisa. Ahead of the new season, Hill previews the show’s new dynamics. Last season ended with that cliffhanger of Rose being taken. What can you preview about what happened and the search for her? Maahra Hill: That is the first case of the season. That is definitely the most important thing that we’re looking into. Alec is a huge part of that case. Marisa is involved in the case as well.

If we wanted the action and harrowing moments, 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 Episode 3 delivered.
In keeping with the previous installments, 9-1-1: Lone Star capitalized on this cast and these characters we adore by expanding the focus a bit while still staying true.
The action of the train derailment reached its height during an hour that saw triumphant rescues and some tragedy.
(Fox/Screenshot) The Lieutenant Race Marks a Refreshing Guard Change
The lieutenant race was interesting because we had two highly qualified individuals competing with one another for a position that they both earned and would be great.
Interestingly enough, we saw how great Marjan was, and they made a strong case for why she would be the right woman for the job as she took charge during 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 Episode 2.

Jesse L. Martin’s character Alec Mercer tackles a number of challenging new cases in a new teaser trailer for “The Irrational” shared exclusively with TheWrap, ahead of its Season 2 premiere on Oct. 8.
Mercer, as we learned in Season 1, is a professor of behavioral science whose insight into human nature gives him an edge in catching criminals. When the NBC series returns, he has to figure out why someone would abandon a commercial ship they just hijacked, the motive behind the kidnapping of an abduction specialist and what drove a pop star to murder her biggest fan.
The short clip features a bomb going off, Mercer peering into a hatch, approaching a dead body and saying that cases that “don’t make sense” are his “speciality.”

Good news: NBC's The Irrational will return for Season 2 in the fall of 2024. Even better, most of the cast will be returning.
The Jesse L. Martin-led police procedural stands out in a sea of crime dramas because it focuses on a behavioral scientist who moonlights as an FBI consultant. It is fun, entertaining, and easy to follow.
We've got you covered if you're playing catch-up now that the season has ended.
Our The Irrational Season 2 cast and character guide covers everything you need to know about the characters before you begin this unique series.

Since the main character is a behavioral scientist, neuroscientific principles often come into play when solving each case.

As many of our favorite television shows are receiving cancelation orders, from Station 19 to Blue Bloods to series that barely make it out of the gate, like Still Star-Crossed or Prodigal Son, it's refreshing to find shows with renewal orders.
It's rare to see new shows that offer something different when it seems like everything has been done, especially among all the remakes and reboots.
Related: These Cancellations Still Haunt Us
However, The Irrational managed to corner a vacant market we didn't even know existed.
Sure, it's a police procedural show.
But it also works in our love of pop psychology with a bit of personal drama to spice things up.

So far, Loki is the only Disney+ Marvel-based series to get a second season, but we're now hearing that a sophomore run for another popular show might be in the cards.
According to Daniel Richtman, a second season of Ms. Marvel is being discussed, but a final decision has not been made.
We have heard that Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is being position as a major player in the MCU going forward, so a second season of her solo show would make sense. That said, Khan's big-screen debut, The Marvels, massively underperformed, which might well influence Marvel/Disney's decision.
Somewhat controversially for long-time fans of the character, Khan was revealed to be a mutant in the season 1 finale, ret-conning her Inhuman status from the comic books.
This new origin soon carried over to the page (though she also retains her Inhuman-ness), with Khan becoming the latest member of the X-Men,...

NBC sees a bright future for Found and The Irrational.
TV Fanatic can confirm that both series have been renewed following decent ratings on the network.
While other networks have buckled under the pressure without much original programming this season due to the strikes, NBC's decision to hold these two dramas for the fall is paying off... big time.
The Irrational kicked off in September and stars Jesse L. Martin (The Flash) as Professor Alec Mercer, who uses his skills in human behavior to help cops solve cases.
They're not your typical cases, which has helped the series stand out in a sea of procedurals.
The cast includes Maahra Hill as Alec's ex-wife Marisa, Travina Springer as his sister Kylie and Molly Kunz, and Arash DeMaxi as his grad student assistants Phoebe and Rizwan.

NBC is sticking with Found and The Irrational.
The network has renewed both first-year dramas — one of just a handful of original scripted series to air on a broadcast network this fall — for second seasons. Both shows were developed off-cycle at NBC and thus had a full complement of episodes in the can before strikes by writers and actors led to dozens of productions shutting down in the summer and early fall.
The two series have also performed solidly for NBC: The Irrational, starring Jesse L. Martin, is averaging 6.34 million viewers per episode after seven days of linear viewing, while the Shanola Hampton-led Found clocks in at 5.18 million viewers (not including streaming for either show). They are also the top two broadcast series of the season so far among Black viewers, with Found ranking first.
