Premiering on December 4, Light Shop was marked as one of Disney+’s tentpole Korean series for 2024 when the streamer’s slate was first announced earlier this year.

Created and written by Kangfull, the mastermind behind Disney+ hit series Moving, Light Shop tells the story of a light shop, its shopkeeper, and a group of strangers who are mysteriously drawn into the shop.

Light Shop is based on a webtoon that Kangfull published in 2011.

Ju Ji-hoon, who plays shopkeeper Jung Won-young, said that finding the right tone for his seemingly aloof, brooding character was the key challenge for him while filming Light Shop.

“The easy part was, I don’t have to use emotions,” Ju told Deadline. “But the difficult part to express is that there’s a reason why I don’t have these emotions. Later on in the series, I have to show why I’m so unexpressive.

Exclusive: The Disney+ and Hulu Korean spy drama Tempest has added Spencer Garrett, Brooke Smith, Tom Lenk (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Michael Gaston, Joel de la Fuente (The Man in the High Castle) and Romy Rosemont to its cast, sources reveal to Deadline.

Light Shop, a mystery drama “that explores life, death, and what makes us human” is set to debut on the streamer in the second half of 2024.

The series is an adaptation of Kang’s popular webtoon of the same name, and tells the story of a group of strangers, each struggling to come to terms with a traumatic event in their past. Disney+ has announced a slate of Asia originals for the second half of 2023, including Korean dramas Moving and The Worst Of Evil and the latest project in its collaboration with Hybe, BTS Monuments: Beyond The Star.

The packed slate of originals also includes Japanese anime Tokyo Revengers: Teknik Arc, part of Disney’s collaboration with publishing house Kodansha, and hybrid live-action and anime series Dragons Of Wonderhatch.

Set to premiere on August 9, Korean drama Moving is based on Kangfull’s webtoon about a group of superpowered individuals on the run from government forces and a mysterious assassin. Ryu Seungryong, Han Hyojoo and Zo Insung head the cast.

Ji Changwook, Squid Game actor Wi Hajun and Lim Semi star in crime drama The Worst Of Evil, set in 1990s Seoul, where a rural police officer is recruited to help bring down a trafficking gang pushing a potent new drug.

South Korean actor Joo Ji-hyun is a star when it comes to K-dramas and their fan base. The actor gained attention for starring as the female lead in one of fantasy romance’s top storylines. According to Soompi, an industry representative said that Joo Ji-hyun and actor Kang Dong-won were positively reviewing starring in Polaris K-drama. The K-drama has a tentative title for now. Jun’s agency Ieum Hashtag commented, “Jun Ji Hyun was offered a role in the drama ‘Polaris’ and is positively reviewing [the offer].”

Kang’s agency also commented similarly about the possibility of the actor joining the K-drama.

Disney+ is boosting its growing K-drama slate with Han River Police, an action comedy series starring Kwon Sang-woo (Stairway to Heaven, Curtain Call) and Kim Hee-won (Netflix’s Unlocked).

Kwon will star as Han Dujin, the hot-tempered sergeant of the Han River Police Force who holds back for nobody, while Kim plays Lee Chunseok, a laid-back lieutenant with the exact opposite personality. Stuck together on patrol of Seoul’s Han River, the two officers are faced with emergency situations ranging from terrorism to everyday accidents and other incidents requiring emergency assistance — a premise that suggests all of the action, humor and offbeat crime-solving of the classic buddy cop genre.

Disney hasn’t released additional casting info for the show, but local news outlet Korea JoongAng Daily reports that Shin Hyeon-seung (So Not Worth It), Lee Sang-yi (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) and Bae Da-bin (Gangnam Beauty) will co-star as other cops on the Han River Police force.

Synopsis

“Perhaps Love” is a comedy about a best selling writer named Hyeon who’s been in the slumps for 7 years meeting a wannabe writer Yoo-jin.

The feature, which was previously titled “Not the Lips”, stars Ryoo Seung-ryong, one of Korea’s most bankable stars and whose last released film was the smash-hit “Extreme Job”, in the lead role of writer Hyeon. Joining the cast are Oh Na-ra (“Casa Amor: Exclusive for Ladies”), Kim Hee-won (“The Man from Nowhere”), Lee Yoo-young (“Grass”) and Sung Yoo-bin (“Moonlit Winter”). “Perhaps Love” is scheduled for a November, 2021 release.
