Diane Lane whips out her copy of the same Slim Keith book I’ve loved for years: “Slim: Memories of a Rich and Imperfect Life.” It details her love affair and marriage to Hollywood auteur Howard Hawks, how she befriended Ernest Hemingway when Hawks was wrangling the rights to “To Have and Have Not,” and her discovery of Harper’s Bazaar covergirl Lauren Bacall to play “Slim” in the movie, a character based on Keith.
An entire chapter is devoted to her deep and loving friendship, during and after her marriage to uber-agent Leland Hayward, with gay novelist Truman Capote, who eventually betrayed her with his infamous Esquire article, “La Cote Basque 1965.” At that moment, as dramatized in the FX series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” Keith (Lane) and her best pal, New York socialite Barbara “Babe” Paley (Naomi Watts), angrily turned their backs on Capote (Tom Hollander), who had...

The Emmys just paid tribute to the great Treat Williams: the 71-year-old actor who died in a motorcycle crash received a posthumous nomination for playing former CBS head and media tycoon Bill Paley in Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans. It was his final role before he died June 12, 2023 in Vermont.
The Ryan Murphy miniseries, which is an adaptation of Laurence Leamer’s bestselling book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era, chronicles the tale of the famous wunderkind author as he stabs several of his female friends — whom he called his “swans” — in the back by publishing a roman à clef short story called “La Côte Basque 1965” in Esquire in 1975.
Last June, FX and 20th TV released this statement: “Treat Williams leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances in film and television, and an indelible mark on the entire industry.

In the ’70s, socialite Ann Woodward lived an afflicted life. That’s one of the first things Demi Moore learned about the former showgirl and model when tasked with portraying her for FX’s “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” Creator Ryan Murphy had called with the offer and before Moore read anything, she told him, “Whatever it is, I’ll do it.”
And she never looked back. Moore first dove into Laurence Leamer’s 2023 book that the series was based on to learn more about Woodward, determined to make sure her portrayal was accurate — and that she knew what really happened. In 1955, Woodward shot and killed her husband after thinking he was a burglar. The jury ruled the death an accident, but the speculation over whether that was true, along with the ostracism it triggered, tormented her every day.

“I wanted it to be alive more than anything, and there to be a sense of real delight and weirdness,” reveals “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” composer Julia Newman about her score for the FX limited series. For our recent webchat she adds, “What I love so much about this show is that there’s no good guys, but we empathize at different moments with all of the characters. Everyone inhabits a real humanness and in inhabiting that humanness, of course, everybody is flawed. I loved the idea of Truman Capote always listening, always with the typewriter going on, as everybody was always scheming. It’s actually part of what makes the story so powerful. As shallow as human beings can get and as deep as human beings can get, what does it mean to be on your deathbed and to regret a friendship lost? That’s so profound. So,...

Based on Laurence Leamer’s Capote’s Women, the third episode of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, titled Masquerade 1966, is all about friendship. A friendship that is broken and betrayed, but where there remains a desire to mend it even though you know it is doomed already. In the previous two episodes, we have already seen how Truman Capote completely threw his best friendship with Babe Paley under the bus by writing an article on her scandalous marriage, but in this episode, we went back to 1966, when everything was fine between these two. At that time, they were the closest friends who seemed to be very genuine on camera, but no one knew at that point that their union would take a drastic turn.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happened In Masquerade 1966?
Episode 3 is all about a documentary shot by the Maysles brothers, Albert and David, who wanted to make a film on Truman’s life.

To “The Swans,” a coterie of New York high society women, Truman Capote was an amusing circus act. Known for penning Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood, these aristocratic ladies invited him to lavish dinner parties and fanciful getaways to indulge in his animated, gossip-filled stories. Author Laurence Leamer found himself captivated by Capote’s mélange of wit, joie de vivre, and callousness, and chronicled his falling-out with his one-percenter gal pals in the 2021 book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era,...

Two central questions hover over “Capote vs. The Swans” — the same two questions that have driven debate in the nearly 40 years since Truman Capote’s death. The first: What happened to “Answered Prayers”? The author’s long-teased final novel was never found, and various friends, associates, and scholars have debated how much of it was even written. Capote announced its completion multiple times. Chapters were shared privately and (very) publicly. Yet a fully realized edition of the book doesn’t appear to exist. So… what happened to it? Did he destroy it? Did he never write it? Talk to a dozen different people and you’ll get a dozen different answers (much like George Plimpton did so vividly in his 1997 book).
The second question at the heart of “Feud” Season 2 is both related to the first and even harder to answer: Why did Capote write, let alone publish, “La Côte...

Although Feud: Capote vs. The Swans is only the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s Feud franchise — Bette and Joan aired way back in 2017 — the anthology’s core seems clear enough. To qualify as a Feud season, the focus must be on a rivalry of little to no cosmic importance that’s somehow integral to the very essence of the people involved. It must exist as nothing and everything all at once.
Capote vs. The Swans creator Jon Robin Baitz understands the general assignment. In focusing on the society kerfuffle between Truman Capote and some of the most powerful women of New York’s upper crust, Baitz has a clash that’s entirely inconsequential and yet cataclysmic within its milieu. Unfortunately, a jumbled approach to time and a limited understanding of character make it a story without momentum.

Truman Capote wanted to title the book he was working on until his death, Answered Prayers — as in: “More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones” — and the trailer for the miniseries Feud: Capote Vs. the Swans shows just how true that is. Ryan Murphy’s “Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans” shatters the social hierarchy of 1960s elite New York, one betrayal at a time.
Season 2 of the anthology series centers on acclaimed writer Truman Capote (Tom Hollander), once a confidante to society’s most elite women, whom he nicknamed “the swans.” However, his act of betrayal effectively destroyed those relationships, banished him from high society and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.
Per the official synopsis, “Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. Spielberg: The First Ten Years by Laurent Bouzereau (Insight Editions) and Steven Spielberg: All the Films by Olivier Bousquet, Arnaud Devillard, and Nicolas Schaller (Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers)
I am not sure what Steven Spielberg obsessives like myself did to earn two lengthy, photo-backed, hardcover career appreciations, but I’m not complaining. Steven Spielberg: All the Films runs for nearly 500 pages and covers literally everything, from the director’s contributions to Rod Serling’s Night Gallery to The Fabelmans. Along the way are some unique insights, surprising facts (Leonardo DiCaprio was approached to play Tintin?), and the inclusion of some of his 1980s television work. And Spielberg: The First Ten Years is just as engaging, and even more in-depth.
