Eternals villain Kro has potential, but he ended up feeling underwhelming in the final MCU film. Early concept art shows Kro as a horror movie monster, different from his final look, hinting at a missed opportunity for a more impactful character. The decision to tone down Kro's appearance for Eternals may have been to appeal to a wider audience, but a scarier design could have made him more memorable.
When Kro appeared in Phase 4 via 2021's Eternals, he proved to be underwhelming but he was very nearly a terrifying villain more fearsome to behold than anything else in the MCU. There was no question that when he first did battle with Eternals' cast of superheroes, he seemed to combine immense power with a menacing appearance. He was also framed as a major antagonist for the film, and it almost looked at one point as if he could become a serious...

Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman was poised to introduce one of the most formidable adversaries to the Kryptonian superhero, Doomsday. The filmmaker’s distinct vision and unwavering commitment to the superhero universe he was creating were evident, with actors like Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Gal Gadot embodying their iconic roles precisely.
Doomsday in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
However, one crucial figure that may have missed the mark in terms of visual impact has been considered the supervillain Doomsday. Jerad. S Marantz’s alternate concept design for the character offers a glimpse into what could have been a more chilling interpretation of Doomsday, leaving DC fans haunted by the possibilities left unrealized in Snyder’s universe.

Unique concept art shows diverse design interpretations for Marvel's The Thing that never made it into a movie. Previous Fantastic Four films used both practical effects and digital methods to bring The Thing to life, creating different looks. The upcoming MCU reboot may lean towards full CGI for The Thing, following in the footsteps of other digitally created characters.
Newly revealed Fantastic Four concept art reveals several wildly original takes on Marvel's Ben Grimm, Aka The Thing. While Reed Richards, Sue Storm, and Johnny Storm all look like standard people while not using their superpowers, Ben, the fourth member of the Fantastic Four, is burdened with always sporting his hulking, rock-covered physique. While this doesn't cause any problems on the pages of Marvel Comics, such a unique look creates design questions that each live-action movie team has answered differently in the four Fantastic Four movies so far.

New concept art for Hal Jordan as Green Lantern in Zack Snyder's Justice League reveals the early vision for the Emerald Knight. Concept artist Jerad S. Marantz shares his designs for a more comic-accurate Green Lantern costume. The concept art provides a closer look at how the movie would've approached Hal's character, which is notably different from the version portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 movie.

The MCU has had a good track record with character designs, but some concept art seems even better than what ended up on screen. There are several reasons, including the practicality of adapting artwork to live action, that may explain why certain compelling designs were not moved forward with. Designs such as Scarlet Witch's demonic appearance, Electro's comic-accurate costume, and Ultron's "Mega-Ultron" form could have added more vibrant and terrifying elements to the MCU.
Every project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe goes through the concept art stage, and some of the franchise's most interesting character designs have been created there. However, some fascinating concepts never made it to the big screen. When creating characters for the MCU, Marvel Studios has decades of stories and artwork from Marvel Comics to work from, but these designs don't always work in live-action. Spider-Man: No Way Home almost featured a more comic-accurate suit for Electro, as revealed by concept art shared by MCU artist Jerad S.Marantz. The film still managed to reference Electro's traditional comic book look with a "starfish"-like mask that would appear around his eyes when he used his powers. Having Electro wear a mask throughout the film would have been unnecessary, as he didn't need to hide his identity from the other characters in the movie. Overall, the film redeemed the character and gave him a second chance.

Official concept art from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania reveals that one Phase 5 character was even more weird than the film portrayed him to be. Given that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania dealt primarily with the living organisms within the Quantum Realm, the film included several over-the-top, weird elements. From the creatures and inhabitants of the Quantum Realm to their customs and appearances, Ant-Man 3 opened up the MCU to a much more strange side than has been previously shown.
This is exemplified by concept art for the film as shared on Jerad Marantz's Instagram account, a member of Marvel Studios' visual development team. Marantz shared some of the work he produced as a concept artist for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's cast of characters, including early designs for David Dastmalchian's Quantum Realm rebellion fighter Veb.

Concept art has been released for an earlier version of The Flash's supersuit which would have fixed some design problems with the final product albeit while raising another. Since first appearing in the Dceu in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the supersuits for The Flash have been divisive. The more armored, modernized look of Barry Allen's cameo scenes in BvS and The Suicide Squad and first proper appearance in Justice League led many to be disappointed with how The Flash looked for his first major cinematic iteration.
While The Flash's CGI suit fixed some of these issues, by making a supersuit that was less focused on metal plating and armor, some complaints still persisted. However, The Flash is a movie that notoriously went through several changes during production, including many different filmmaker and scriptwriter alterations that adjusted the story multiple times before settling on what was told in the final cut.

With production on The Batman underway in the UK, fans are eagerly awaiting their first look at Robert Pattinson in the Batsuit. Now seems like the perfect time, then, to take a trip into the past and see what could have been with the previous cinematic depiction of the Dark Knight, as played by Ben Affleck in Zack Snyder’s cult favorite Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Just take this newly posted artwork of Thanos sporting an alternate suit of armor for the Infinity Saga climax. Compared to the Mad Titan’s outfit in the final film, the color scheme here is relatively muted, while the top of his helmet looks a fair bit smoother.
Overall, the design seems a little more efficient and a little less showy than the costume worn by Thanos in the movie itself, but when you’re supposed to be the Avengers’ greatest villain, perhaps it pays to dress a little flashier.

Long before Eddie Brock established himself as a big screen lead in his own right, concept artist Jerad Marantz was concerned that one of his designs for Avengers: Infinity War might be too reminiscent of Spider-Man’s old foe Venom.
In the new artbook Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie, Marantz takes us through the thinking behind the big screen debut of the vicious Outriders, explaining that he took some inspiration from the outfits of Thanos and his minions in designing a less symbiote-esque look for these creatures.
“I loved designing the Outriders. It was a real challenge,” Marantz recalls. “After looking at the source material, I wanted them to have a biomechanics quality to them. There was concern that the Outriders may look too much like a Venom symbiotic, and the challenge was to ensure they had a unique look. To achieve that, I decided...

Last week, Flashback FilmMaking released a new featurette dissecting the villain of Justice League, Steppenwolf. Voiced and motion captured by Ciaran Hinds, the baddie attempted to destroy Earth in the 2017 blockbuster using Mother Boxes but was ultimately thwarted by the titular supergroup. More specifically, Superman.
The warrior from Apokolips is a general in Darkseid’s army, whose coming was initially prophesied in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice during the Knightmare Flash sequence. Unfortunately, we’re not likely to ever see Steppenwolf’s nephew even begin his tyrannical reign, on account of WB and DC’s spat with Dceu creator, for all intents and purposes, Zack Snyder. But I digress.
Artist Jerad Marantz took to Instagram a few days ago and posted the below image of early concept art for Steppenwolf from the turbulent production. On Justice League, Marantz served as a costume concept illustrator and worked closely with costume designer Michael Wilkinson.

Concept artist Jerad Marantz has released a few illustrations featuring early designs for the Batsuit. Marantz worked with costume designer Michael Wilkinson on the design of Ben Affleck's suit, and as you'd image, they went through different variations of the suit design before the settled on one. I personally love the suit design that we saw in the movie, but these alternate versions are still pretty cool.

Doctor Strange went through several different looks during the design process before his feature film debut, though from the looks of it, his arch-nemesis Dormammu was the most difficult to render when it came to his live-action appearance. We've covered several pieces of concept art from various artists in the past, most of which attempted to pay homage to the character's look in the comics. However, some new pieces from artist Jerad Marantz may be just be the most "strange" designs yet. Marantz revealed the designs on his ArtStation profile, most of which depict a crumbling, statuesque design for the dreaded villain. Though the final look of Oscar Isaac's En Sabah Nur in X-Men: Apocalypse actually turned out fine (obviously that's a matter of opinion), the initial images that were released of the character met with some pretty strong backlash. Well, this latest concept artwork from Jerad Marantz depicts an incarnation of the First Mutant that's much more in line with how he appears in the comics. Marantz doesn't give any indication of how close his design came to being used for the actual movie, but there are probably quite a few fans that wish it had been. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Green Lantern has finally hit theater screens across most of the world and with it's general reaction from fans and critics alike being mediocre to say the least. Artist Jerad Marantz has posted via his blog some very amazing concept art that he drew up for the big screen adaption of the DC comics hero. Some of which looks absolutely stunning and would've looked even better had it made it's way into the finished product. Pretty cool stuff. Too bad they went the Galactus-cloud route for Parallax.
