Updated: Escape Room 2 will now open on July 16 instead of next year, where it had been scheduled for the first weekend of 2022. Sony already has the Kay Cannon-directed Camila Cabello musical Cinderella on July 16. For now, that movie will stay there as Sony monitors overseas markets.
There’s a chance that both Escape Room 2 and Cinderella will stay on that date given that they are targeted at different demographics. Warner Bros also has its HBO Max release Space Jam 2 on July 16 as does Searchlight with its Sundance horror acquisition The Night House.
Previously, January 25: Sony/Screen Gems Escape Room 2 will now open on Jan. 7, 2022.
The sequel to the $155M-plus horror film was recently taken off the theatrical release calendar. Previously Sony had the movie set to open on Dec. 30, 2020, then prior to that, Aug. 14, and then even before that date, April 17.

“Escape Room 2” has moved up its release to July.
The sequel to the 2019 psychological thriller will now debut on July 16, 2021, nearly six months earlier than its planned release date of Jan. 7, 2022.
With the box office beginning to revive after the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s possible that “Escape Room 2” moved up in the schedule to compete within the summer blockbuster timeframe. The first “Escape Room” was a hit at the box office, earning $155 million. “Godzilla vs. Kong” recently raked in the largest box office gross during the pandemic with $31 million, and this past weekend featured a fierce box office battle between “Mortal Kombat” and “Demon Slayer,” signaling to the industry that moviegoers are certainly eager to return to theaters.
The first “Escape Room” film follows six strangers who are brought together to participate in an escape room game, but soon learn they are pawns in a puzzle that could lead to life or death.

Sony Pictures' psychological thriller, Escape Room, arrives next month on Blu-ray and Digital. See what bonus features it includes within..
Escape Rooms are usually a fun, challenging time spent with friends to gain memories and solve clues in a team-growing environment. Some are fabricated in themes like a Sherlock Holmes mystery, others count down the end of the world, etc. What if one was real, though, and the cost of not solving the puzzle in time meant your life?
Last year, Sony Pictures explored that idea with Escape Room. On April 9, 2019 you can re-live the intense thriller when it arrives on Digital. If physical copies are more your style, the Blu-Ray and DVD will follow a few weeks later, on April 23, 2019.

Adam Robitel’s 2019 film Escape Room is Sony’s attempt at crafting a cheap money making franchise in small budgets and big returns in the same vein as Lionsgate’s enormously successful but varying degree of quality Saw series. Running at just under one hundred minutes, ninety of which are engrossingly tense and aggressively atmospheric with a delightful b-movie quality that no doubt entertains but sadly falls off the wayside with an irksome sequel bait set up that jumps the shark to a stilted degree.
Not to discredit Escape Room for all it proposes in entertainment value but it is derived unconditionally from the bowels of James Wan’s Saw of 2004. Not necessarily the most damning of comparisons...

Important lesson learnt after watching Escape Room
When a slasher like Saw meets The Game for PG -13 audience, things are unfortunately not the same.
What is the story/plotline of Escape Room?
A psychological thriller about six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and must use their wits to find the clues or die.
Analysis
Respecting the genre and avoiding to be labeled as a spoiler (The makers had a pre release screening but an embargo on reviews going live only by Friday morning in India after 10:00 a.m) makes sense to them.

Respecting the genre and avoiding to be labeled as a spoiler (The makers had a pre release screening but an embargo on reviews going live only by Friday morning in India after 10:00 a.m) makes sense to them.

Hugely popular short video platform, TikTok has teamed with Sony Pictures Entertainment to promote the studio’s psychological thriller “Escape Room.”
The film features six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control. They must use their wits to find and follow the clues, or die.
Sony recreated settings from the film, including a shrinking room and an ice room, in Madrid, Spain. These were used for a creator event pitching 30 key opinion leaders from 17 countries against TikTok talent from the U.K., Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Switzerland, Thailand, Malaysia and Spain.
As they participated in the challenges, both groups recorded their experiences, creating 75 pieces of video content, and sharing with their fans on TikTok’s official “Escape Room” movie page. Participating TikTok creators included the magician, Magic Singh, comedian Karol Konk and makeup artist and body painter Vicky Banham.

As far as PG-13 horror films released in January go, Escape Room exceeds expectations despite a fairly sloppy (yet efficient) set-up which traces three of the six players that make their way to an anonymous Chicago dockside warehouse ready to play an immersive game for $10,000 in prizes.
While character development comes in the form of flashbacks that do find a link between the characters, the real star of the film is the elaborate set pieces, which push the psychological intensity right up to the PG-13 limit. Directed by Adam Robitel (Insidious: The Last Key) from a script by Bragi F. Schut and Maria Melnik, Escape Room delivers a few genuine white-knuckle moments. In the film’s best-directed sequence we find an inverted bar where the floor–or ceiling–literally falls out beneath the players; another highlight places our leads in a small room influenced by 1980s video art that inspired...

“Aquaman” is ringing in the new year by topping the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row with an estimated $30.5 million.
The aquatic adventure starring Jason Momoa has also become the highest grossing DC title overseas with $649.3 million to date after earning $12.4 million from 79 international markets on Friday. That beats “The Dark Knight Rises,” which previously held the position with $636.8 million internationally. This weekend’s projected domestic haul would mark a roughly 42% decline, with “Aquaman” having taken in $887.6 million globally.
The weekend’s only wide release among a slew of holdovers, Sony’s “Escape Room,” will spar with the third frame of “Mary Poppins Returns” for second place with about $16 million each. That number marks a debut above earlier estimates for “Escape Room.”
The psychological horror pic, which opened at 2,717 North American locations, pocketed $7.7 million on Friday, including $2.3 million from Thursday previews.

The third frame of “Aquaman” is again leaving rivals under water at the North American box office, with about $25 million for the first weekend of the year, early estimates showed on Friday.
“Mary Poppins Returns” has been forecast to finish with about $20 million, while Sony’s launch of the thriller “Escape Room” is coming in above expectations at about $15 million at 2,717 sites, although the studio is adhering to a $10 million to $12 million range. Sony’s fourth frame of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is heading for fourth with about $13 million, followed by Paramount’s third weekend of “Transformers” prequel “Bumblebee” with $11 million.
“Aquaman” is heading for a decline of about 52% this weekend at 4,125 domestic locations. The Warner Bros. tentpole, starring Jason Momoa, has dominated the domestic market since it opened on Dec. 21 with $222 million in its first 13 days in North America. “Aquaman” has hit a worldwide total of $846 million, led by $277 million in China.

One of my favorite activities is to go with a few friends and do an Escape the Room game. I’ve done them in multiple states across the country, and even done one in Dubai. They’re an absolute blast. So, despite the iffy Trailer and troubling release date, I was looking forward to Escape Room. Maybe it could surprise? I’d even heard a bit of positive buzz. Then, earlier this week…I saw it. Alas. This is a standard issue garbage January release, truly meant to be dumped. In fact, even though it’s early, I wouldn’t be surprised at all for it to end up in 12 months gracing my Bottom Ten list for 2019. This film is a horror/thriller hybrid that mixes in adventure concepts. A cold open shows us one unlucky individual in Ben (Logan Miller) desperately trying to escape a room with its walls literally closing in.

Later tonight, Adam Robitel’s Escape Room will be arriving in theaters, and to mark the occasion, Daily Dead recently caught up with the director to talk about his latest genre offering. A twisty little experiment in psychological horror that follows a group of participants trapped inside an Escape Room experience where their lives are constantly hanging in the balance, Escape Room was written by Bragi F. Schut and Maria Melnik, and stars Deborah Ann Woll, Taylor Russell, Tyler Labine, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis, and Nik Dodani.

The premise is simple: A group of folks who don’t know each other receive a mysterious box in the mail. Inside this elaborate gift — think the Hellraiser cube, only a wee bit more benign — is an invite for a free session at an exclusive Chicago escape room. They show up on the appointed date and time, all of them trying to figure out why a corporate hotshot (Insecure‘s Jay Ellis), a shy college student (Taylor Russell), an Iraqi War Veteran (Deborah Ann Woll), a trucker (Tyler Labine), a...

As someone who has spent a good amount of time in various escape rooms over the last few years (and I’ve probably lost more than I’ve won), Adam Robitel’s Escape Room was—as the kids these days are saying—completely my jam. From the high-energy script to the excellent ensemble assembled onscreen to the wondrously intricate production design and breathtaking set pieces, Escape Room delivered everything I was hoping for and more, making it the perfect way to kick off a brand new year of horror.
The setup for Escape Room is pretty much what you’d expect if you’ve seen just one trailer: six strangers find themselves in the mix of a mysterious escape room scenario, all driven by different reasons for accepting the challenge. But the group quickly realizes this contest of will and wit has far grander stakes than they could have ever imagined,...

“Escape Room” filmmaker Adam Robitel has carved out a funny little niche for himself as the director of the first wide-release movie of the new year, two years running. Robitel rang in 2018 with “Insidious: The Last Key,” a functional but forgettable shocker in the “Insidious” franchise. Which was, in retrospect, perfectly fitting for a disturbing year, one that we somehow managed to collectively get through but which many of us would prefer never to talk about again. Maybe he was onto something.
Here’s the good news: “Escape Room,” Robitel’s latest New Year’s gift to the world, is a definite improvement. This gimmicky William Castle-inspired thriller is 10 pounds of silly in a five-pound bag, but you know that going in. It’s a movie about escape rooms that literally kill you, and if you’re willing to buy into that premise, it’s about as good as...

Long before puzzle hounds and adrenaline junkies were spending their own money and time solving real-world escape rooms, the horror space was dramatizing it on the big screen. From the obvious — the “Cube” cult favorites, the still-spinning “Saw” franchise — to enduring classics like, well, just about any haunted house film worth its screams, movies about overcoming terror with logic have always been a staple of the genre. Now that people can experience the madness of escape rooms for themselves, it’s only fitting that the film industry has taken note and churned out its own thriller about said rooms — entitled simply “Escape Room.”
This isn’t the first horror movie of its type: Not to be confused with 2017’s “Escape Room,” which also centered on the eponymous experience veering out of control, or last year’s “No Escape Room,” which added a supernatural twist to the same general scenario, Adam Robitel...

Tagline: "Find the Clues or Die." The upcoming horror thriller Escape Room should not be mixed-up with other films. This version, from director Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan), should not be confused with Peter Duke's film, of the same name, nor Will Wernick's Escape Room. Besides the unoriginal title, Escape Room (2019) brings six characters together, in a trap filled room. As the temperature heats up, the characters are forced to find solutions to more and more complex puzzles. Escape Room was written by Bragi F. Shut and Maria Melnik. As well, the cast consists of: Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs Evil), Deborah Ann Woll and Taylor Russell. The film's first sweat drenched trailer is hosted here. Daredevil’s Deborah Ann Woll and Lost in Space’s Taylor Russell tackle a surreal maze with killer consequences in Escape Room.
Escape Room, a psychological thriller from Sony Pictures, might just become a refreshing entry for the horror genre’s current phase of jump-scare ghost movies. Moreover, it’s the kind of film that inspires education and creative thinking, utilizing the ultimate form of duress: an elaborately violent death.
Fans of Netflix TV will know some of its primary players, such as Lost in Space co-star Taylor Russell and Daredevil co-star Deborah Ann Woll. They are joined here by Tyler Labine (New Amsterdam), Nik Dodani (Murphy Brown), Logan Miller (The Walking Dead) and Jay Ellis (Insecure) as part of a group who volunteer to participate in an experimental maze in which – unbeknownst to them – their ability to solve problems will keep them alive.
