Drug use is a compelling theme in episodic entertainment, be it the comedy “Weeds,” the drama “Breaking Bad,” or the Web series “High Maintenance.” Freelance filmmaker Luis Bustamante further explores the fertile ground in his comedic Web series, “Beverly Pills,” which follows Beverly Hills socialite Scarlett Davis (Ginger Parker), who after the government seizes her fortune, is forced to turn to drug dealing to make ends meet. Bustamante, an Art Institute of California alum, started his project by conducting some very basic research. He didn’t want to be “stepping on toes and stealing people’s ideas,” he told Backstage. Still, the director describes “Beverly Pills” as a hybrid of “Weeds” and “Desperate Housewives,” with reality TV providing some inspiration for the main character. When he cast Parker, a colleague and classmate, Bustamante told her to watch episodes of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” and play close attention to Brandi Glanville.

Is it possible to say we had too much fun with this podcast? Possibly, but that had a lot to do with the return of our favorite guest (and that's saying something), Steve Silverman. The writer-director popped by to introduce us to his friend Ginger Parker, who has a new Web series, "Beverly Pills," debuting Monday, March 10 at beverlypillstheseries.com. But that wasn't all we talked about. And we were drinking. That was our way to salute the series, which is about a spoiled rich girl who starts dealing prescription drugs after she loses her income stream. Yeah, that's why we were drinking. In any case, we talked about lots of other stuff, like the Oscars, Lindsay Lohan, "Dallas," "Millionaire Matchmaker" and more. Did we tell you about Ginger's time on "Millionaire Matchmaker"? Oh yeah, that happened. Just listen. At least we had fun! :015 - 9:00 We discuss "Beverly Pills...

FEARnet's new horror news series, Fear News has everything we'd expect from a decent terror flick—midriff flaunting ingénue, creepy animatronics and chase sequences. Only our young heroine is actually delivering the horror news—from within a horror set. It's the Rocketboom of horror. Only the young anchor-at-a-desk motif is supplanted with the darker dregs of an fictionalized horror set. Each week is different horror set theme, with last week being slasher film and the latest (above) in a ghost flick. When this idea was first thrown around earlier this summer, I'll admit I had my doubts. The concept seemed a little too hokey to deliver any sort of genuine tension. But so far it delivers, much the same way as any run-of-the-mill slasher flick keeps us watching to see how the inept leads somehow slip away. The brains behind Fear News are creators Jack Conway and Matthew Mercer, known...
