Ever since the release of Hideo Nagata’s landmark effort “Ringu” in 1998, the term ‘J-Horror’ has been bandied about and adopted for numerous films and influenced efforts from other countries until a slight downturn of releases several years ago. Now that it seems that the style is amid a rebirth, the new film from director Hirotaka ‘Otsuichi’ Adachi, ‘Stare,’ aims to help reinvigorate the genre with its North American premiere screening at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival

Between Ringu, Ju-on: The Grudge, and One Missed Call, the turn of the century ushered in the J-horror craze thanks to long-haired ghosts that enacted vengeance through curses—curses that spread from victim to victim in viral fashion. Director/screenwriter Hirotaka Adachi (also known as the author Otsuichi) aims to revive the dormant subgenre in Stare, a new entry in J-horror with its own long-haired killer entity. With a similar setup twenty years after the initial J-horror craze waxed and waned, the question of whether Stare has anything unique to offer this subgenre looms large.
At first, Adachi’s spin on the Japanese ghost story sets itself apart with an opening victim that dies in a restaurant in broad daylight, her eyes literally exploding from her head. Shocked and distraught, it prompts her friend Mizuki to seek out answers. She crosses paths with Haruo, whose brother wasn’t only connected to her deceased friend,...

Director: Takahashi Gen. Review: Adam Wing. If you're in the mood for a little something on the bleaker side of life then look no further, based on Otsuichi's award-winning mystery novel, Goth: Love of Death follows two high school students, Itsuki and Yoru, who share a morbid fascination with dead bodies, human torture and murder. One day, they find a strange notebook at a coffee shop, which details the strange serial murder cases that have struck the area in recent times. Itsuki and Yoru decide to track down the undiscovered victims so they can see the corpses for themselves, because that's what you do when you're not on facebook. Obviously. Rising stars Hongo Kanata (K-20: The Fiend with Twenty Faces) and Takanashi Rin (Rookies) play the troubled young protagonists, and Takahashi Gen (Confessions of a Dog) directs this haunting, unique and refreshing take on the traditional horror template.

Fans of atmospheric Japanese murder and mystery should look no further than the upcoming release of Goth: Love of death. A live-action adaptation of the award-winning novel by popular Japanese author Otsuichi (Zoo), Goth is directed by Gen Takahashi (Confessions Of A Dog) and stars Rin Takanashi (Samurai Squadron Shinkenger) and Kanata Hongo (The Prince Of Tennis) in a disturbing tale of two teenagers with an unhealthy appetite for the macabre. The original source novel has already been adapted into a Manga by artist Kendi Oiwa and an American movie adaptation (interestingly, not a remake of Takahashi's film) is reportedly in the pipeline for 2011. Goth is release on UK R2 DVD, September 21st.

“Goth: Love of Death” is director Takahashi Gen’s live-action adaptation of the award-winning novel by Japanese author Otsuichi, which had previously been adapted into a popular manga by artist Kendi Oiwa, and which has apparently been optioned for a Hollywood version. Thankfully, despite its title, the film is not concerned with depressed, makeup wearing vampire wannabes, but is a far more interesting affair, following a couple of outsider, death-obsessed teenagers who become entangled with a series of bizarre murders. Unsurprisingly given such potentially grim subject matter, the film is pretty bleak, though at the same time is engaging and even oddly moving. As such, it offers something very different to the usual Asian horror shenanigans, and its region 2 DVD release via 4Digital Asia is a welcome one indeed. The film is set in the faceless suburbs of Tokyo, where a serial killer has been murdering young women, severing...

Gen Takahashi’s Goth is a film we’ve been keeping an eye on since first hearing about it a few months back for a few reasons.
First, it’s the film adaptation of a very popular novel by a writer known simply as Otsuichi.
Second, it’s a prime example of the sort of youth-gone-wrong film that makes up a significant sub-genre in Japan while being almost entirely non-existent here in North America. Graphic scenes of attempted suicide, self abuse and teen on teen violence are included, thins that have never been real popular with the powers that be in North America and became pretty much verboten in the post-Columbine media environment.
Finally, and most intriguingly from my perspective, this novel is also being adapted right now by director Jt Petty (The Burrowers, S&Man), which will give audiences a very rare chance to see material adapted almost simultaneously...

Whenever a new project is announced from Production I.G, all it requires for us to take notice is just from the simple fact that the animation studio’s name alone is attached. As one of the leading studio in Japan that produce some of the most cutting edge animation including Blood: The Last Vampire and Ghost in the Shell, we can expect nothing less than high quality production. This time around, Production I.G is making its first foray into a full CG animated feature film entitled Hottarake no Shima - Haruka to Maho no Kagami (tentative English title: Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror). The director is Shinsuke Sato (Princess Blade) who is making his debut in animation and the screenplay is written by Hirotaka Adachi. According to the studio’s official site, the plot will follow a teenage girl named Haruka as she discovers where all...
