There’s a notion that action movies are best enjoyed on the big screens. But in recent times, Ott platforms have also stepped up their game in producing original action movies for their audience. To match and compete with massive action movie franchises like John Wick, Mission: Impossible, and others, streaming platforms like Netflix have also created projects like Extraction.

Action has a wide range of themes, from thrilling heist flicks to cop thrillers to Western backdrops. Now, Netflix has produced some of the big-budget action movies, but what’s unfortunate is that it has only promoted the worst ones. Although films like Bird Box, The Gray Man, and others generated a lot of views, some underrated action dramas deserve to be credited.

Spoilers for "Creature Commandos" to follow.
The opening credits of "Creature Commandos" is a roll-call of the offbeat cast set to classic Venezuelan song "Moliendo Café." The last figure in the call is series creator, and new DC Universe architect, James Gunn. The animated Gunn is sitting at his laptop, writing the script for the "Creature Commandos" episode we're about to see. If you thought Gunn would be hands off with the show, think again. The series has his thumbprint over each key frame of animation and syllable of dialogue.
So far, "Creature Commandos" has the pop music needle drops that Gunn has been writing his superhero movies to since "Guardians of the Galaxy." The series' second episode, "The Tourmaline Necklace," shows the century long history between Frankenstein (David Harbour) and his Bride (Indira Varma) with a montage set to Gogol Bordello's "American Wedding.

The Lonely Island‘s Jorma Taccone is in good company for his next directorial project as Ben Schwartz and Sam Rockwell board the upcoming Searchlight comedy DNA. News about Taccone joining DNA as the film’s director and producer comes after he recently launched production in Finland for The Trip, an upcoming thriller starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving.
Plot details for DNA remain a mystery, though we know Schwartz sold the concept to Searchlight in 2020. Schwartz wrote the script, while Ali Bell, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Taccone produced through their Party Over Here studio. Rockwell gets in on the action as an executive producer alongside Schwartz.
Taconne’s other directorial efforts include shorts and music videos for The Lonely Island, Parks and Recreation, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Miracle Workers, The Last O.G., and Paramount’s Knuckles series. His upcoming thriller, The Trip, revolves around a troubled couple who visit an isolated cabin.

Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) showcases the more sentimental side of Stephen King with The Life of Chuck, based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds. Neon has officially set a release date for the new King adaptation.
The Life of Chuck will be released in theaters on May 30, 2025.
TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner is split in three separate acts, all linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse. “It’s a Stand By Me for the multiple lives within each of us, pulled between our dreams and down-to-earth pragmatism.” Tom Hiddleston plays the title character.
I wrote in my TIFF review, “It’s the little things that matter most, both in life and in The Life of Chuck. Flanagan finds inventive and stylish ways to remind us of this throughout, shaking loose deep-seated memories from Chuck’s upbringing and highlighting...

The Life Of Chuck, based on Stephen King’s novel and directed by Mike Flanagan, is confirmed for a 2025 release.
Coming out of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, there was a feeling that Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck could be an awards contender. Not only is this year’s race for Best Picture said to be one of the most open we’ve had for years, but The Life Of Chuck would win TIFF’s coveted People’s Choice Award, historically a strong indicator that a film would go on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Twelve of the last 14 winners have gone on to do so.
The film’s US distributor Neon, however, has instead elected to give the film a May 2025 release slot according to Deadline. Not only does that preclude the film...

Variety posted a description for The Life of Chuck in September, saying, “Adapted from Stephen King’s 2020 novella, The Life of Chuck stars Tom Hiddleston and is directed by Mike Flanagan. Billed as a ‘life-affirming’ story about an ordinary man named Charles Krantz, the film is split into three distinct chapters that unfurl in reverse chronological order and are set against the backdrop of a world that appears to be slowly crumbling.

In 2021, Tommy Wirkola delivered a delightfully deranged and bloody comedic thriller in The Trip. Now, Variety reports that a remake is in the works with an impressive cast lined up.
Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant, and Juliette Lewis are set to star in The Trip, directed by Lonely Island member Jorma Taccone (Pop Star: Never Stop Stopping).
In The Trip, “a dysfunctional couple (Segel and Weaving) who head to a remote cabin to supposedly reconnect, but each has secret plans to kill the other.” What the logline leaves out is that the couple’s plans to commit murder get derailed by the arrival of actual killers, and violent mayhem ensues.
Paul Guilfoyle (LA Confidential) and former UFC star Keith Jardine (Inherent Vice) have also joined the cast, likely rounding out the murderers that converge in The Trip.

Actor Kirsten Dunst may be known for blockbuster features like Spider-Man and Bring It On. But one of her first projects, Jumanji, held a special place in fans’ hearts everywhere. Being a fan of the first film as well, she might’ve been just as shocked as everyone else to hear about Jumanji’s more modern sequel.

After making two Jumanji movies in just four years’ time, Red One director Jake Kasdan needed a major change of scenery.
So when Dwayne Johnson’s right-hand man Hiram Garcia — and president at his Seven Bucks production company — called with an idea to turn “D.J.” into Callum Drift, Santa Claus’ head of security for the Yuletide action-fantasy-comedy, Kasdan welcomed the intention of treating the North Pole like a governmental operation. The plot kicks into gear when Chris Evans’ roguish jack-of-all-trades, Jack O’Malley, pinpoints the top-secret location of the North Pole for monetary gain, enabling the Christmas witch Gryla (Kiernan Shipka) to kidnap J.K. Simmons’ unconventionally fit Santa.
Johnson’s Drift and the rest of his Secret Service-type organization known as E.L.F. (Enforcement Logistics and Fortification) spring into action by joining forces with Zoe Harlow’s (Lucy Liu) M.O.R.A (Mythological Oversight and Restoration Authority) to recover “Nick” and hopefully save Christmas.

Marvel Studios has shared a cast list for the upcoming third and final season of What If...?, and Jeffrey Wright's Watcher looks set to be joined by another A-List lineup of Marvel Cinematic Universe talent.
We heard some time ago that season 3 would add some key Phase 4 characters to the mix, and that's evident from the presence of Kingo, Shang-Chi, Kate Bishop, and Moon Knight.
There aren't many surprises beyond that, though we are intrigued to see what the likes of Sonny Burch and Arishem the Judge bring to the table.
What If...? will also deliver some big MCU debuts, with Barbie star America Ferrera and Harry Potter icon Jason Isaacs among the guest stars set to appear in the 8-episode series.

For all his life, Peter Quill had never known about his biological father. He learned more than he thought possible in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but how did the movie come to an end?
The second installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies brought us more of Quill’s backstory. We learned that his father was actually a Celestial being who took on a human form and fell in love with Quill’s mother, Meredith. After her death, Ego ordered Yondu to collect Quill and bring the boy to him, but that never happened.
Of course, Quill wants to believe that his dad is a good guy. The man even starts to show Quill his own celestial powers and he learns how to control them. Since when are the powerful Celestial beings the good guys, though?

Dwayne Johnson will reportedly be returning to the role of Dr. Xander Bravestone in the upcoming Jumanji 3. The actor has been working on several projects, though he has yet to make a full-fledged appearance since Black Adam. Sony Pictures has reportedly booked a release date of December 2026 for the threequel.
Johnson starred along with Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas in the previous film. While the Rock was also a producer on the adventure comedy, he reportedly received a hefty paycheck of $23.5 million for the film. Still, Kevin Hart recently revealed that the success of the film netted him a final payout of close to $30 million.

Sony is finally pressing ahead with Jumanji 3 – the fifth film in the Jumanji universe – with a release date in 2026.
It’s been a whopping four years since Jake Kasdan – director of the most recent two Jumanji films – revealed that another film in the series was in the ‘early planning stages.’ That was all the way back in 2020 and as you well know, the years following would be riddled with problems, delays, strikes and shutdowns for Hollywood.
Still, 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level did leave the door open for another film and it looks like that is finally happening, with the news that Sony is backing one more film in the series. A December 2026 release date booked for the film’s debut. We don’t yet have a title for the project but it has been confirmed that Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are likely to return.

Sony Pictures has announced a new chapter in its Jumanji franchise will arrive in theaters on December 11, 2026. This release date comes nearly seven years after the studio’s previous Jumanji film and ends speculation about the future of the successful action-comedy series.
The as-yet untitled fourth Jumanji film is slated to reunite the franchise’s core cast members. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black are all expected to reprise their in-game avatar roles of teenagers transported into the magical video game world of Jumanji. Johnson, Hart, Gillan, and Black have anchored the modern Jumanji films since 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle revived the franchise for contemporary audiences.
Scheduling conflicts partly explain the extended gap between installments. Johnson has committed time to multiple major franchises like Fast & Furious and projects with Disney and DC. Gillan told one outlet “They’re so fun, and I really like Ruby Roundhouse.

Welcome back to the jungle! It's been a long five years since the release of Jake Kasdan's Jumanji: The Next Level back in 2019, which proved itself a more than worthy successor to the surprise critical and commercial hit that was Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. But now, at long last, we know exactly when we can expect to see Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and co getting back in the game. Per THR's reporting, Sony Pictures has set an 11 December, 2026 release date for their family adventure franchise's trilogy closing third instalment.
The core cast of the first two movies are all expected to return in the upcoming threequel, which will once again see Kasdan occupying the director's chair. And whilst we don't know who'll be joining them this time around, we do have a pretty solid idea where things are heading third time around, despite the...

Columbia Pictures has announced “Jumanji 3” (final title yer to be determined) is now on the slate, expected to be completed and released two years from now. Everyone who starred in the 2017 and 2019 movies is expected to return again as avatars of the once evil board game turned evil video game, including Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black, as well as director Jake Kasdan. I had the same question you did when this came across my desk. “Jumanji 3? Which movie are they not counting?” There have been three Jumanji movies already: the 1995 original, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” from 2017, and “Jumanji: The Next Level” from 2019. I have the dread feeling it’s the Williams / Dunst film they’re leaving out, as it’s so different from the more recently released sequels. I regard the original Jumanji as the film that closed the book on the “unexpectedly scary children’s movie,...

Are you ready for another game? Sony Pictures has announced that Jumanji 3 is officially in the works, giving the sequel a December 11, 2026 release. The film will screen in IMAX and premium large formats.
It’s expected that director Jake Kasdan and stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan will return for Jumanji 3 as the group are all in talks for the new sequel. The original Jumanji film starring Robin Williams is a beloved classic, so the thought of a sequel wasn’t initially embraced. However, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle proved to be a major success, earning praise from critics and $962 million worldwide. Sony was quick to get the ball rolling on a sequel, and although Jumanji: The Next Level didn’t do quite as well, it still grossed a very impressive $801 million worldwide.

Ready to play “Jumanji” again?
Sony has dated a third “Jumanji” movie, presumably in the same continuity as the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson/Jack Black films, for Dec. 11, 2026. No casting or filmmaking details have been confirmed, beyond producers Matt Tolmach, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Jake Kasdan.
This is technically the fifth “Jumanji” film, after Joe Johnston’s 1995 original film and Jon Favreau’s “Zathura” in 2005 (technically a stand-alone spinoff of the original). In 2017, the franchise was revived with “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” which changed the original boardgame into a videogame. That was followed by “Jumanji: The Next Level.”
The two newer films — which also starred Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Nick Jonas — were directed by Jake Kasdan, whose action Christmas movie “Red One” hits theaters later this year. Most, if not all, of the team behind the two more recent “Jumanji” movies are expected to return.

In one of the McU's biggest-ever twists, Zoe Saldaña's Gamora died at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Time travel opened the door to her returning in Avengers: Endgame, though it was as a pre-Guardians of the Galaxy Variant.
When James Gunn returned to that franchise, he established that this Gamora didn't - and likely wouldn't - fall in love with Star-Lord and had her join the Ravagers in place of the Guardians.
In a new interview, Saldaña looked back at her time as the character and shared her biggest regret about the original Gamora's role in the Infinity Saga's final chapters. "I wish I could go back and reshoot what Gamora was going through in the Avengers movies," the actor explained. "I don't think I was quite understanding what the Russo Brothers [were doing]."
Saldaña also shared her dashed hopes to have taken a deeper dive into the...

Mike Flanagan and Stephen King are partnering on a new project — an eight-episode adaptation of King’s beloved novel, “Carrie.” The series will go to Amazon, TheWrap has learned.
Flanagan will serve as the showrunner, writer and executive producer of the upcoming series with Trevor Macy also attached as an EP. Melinda Nishioka will oversee the project for Intrepid Pictures.
The series is being described as “a bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White.”
Flanagan and King have already proven that they can make some spooky magic together. Based on the 2020 novella of the same name, “The Life of Chuck” was well-received at TIFF, winning the People’s Choice Award. The film starring Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan and Jacob Tremblay will be released in the United States by Neon in 2025.
It’s a fitting collaboration between these literary and television masters of horror.

Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, this relentless action epic is filled with violent standoffs, breakneck fight choreography, and a morally conflicted heroine navigating a dangerous underworld. With its maximalist style, excessive bloodshed, and a narrative centered around mercenaries who kill for the highest bidder, the film offers a dizzying ride that prioritizes visceral thrills over emotional depth.
For fans of The Shadow Strays who are seeking more movies that like the aforementioned blend stylized violence with stories of antiheroes, we’ve compiled a list of five action-packed movies that deliver similarly intense experiences. These films, ranging from assassin revenge tales to brutal gangland showdowns, all share themes of relentless combat, emotional scars, and protagonists battling their own darkness.

Exclusive: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock could be about to dust off his magnifying glass.
Sue Vertue, who produced the beloved BBC reimagining of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories, has said the brand is likely to return.
“We love that show and there is a future for it. One day. Maybe. If everyone wants to do it,” Vertue told Deadline on the blue carpet at the Amazon Prime Video Trailblazers event in London.
“I’ve still got the set in storage somewhere, which is probably rotten, to be honest with you,” she added. “It’s just getting everybody aligned, it’s getting the actors to want to do it.”
Sherlock co-creator and star Mark Gatiss raised hopes for a film earlier this year, telling Deadline: “We’d like to make a film but trying to get everyone together is very difficult.”
Cumberbatch starred in the series alongside Martin Freeman’s John Watson.

This week sees the release of Marvel Studios: The Art of Ryan Meinerding, a book showcasing the artist's singular and iconic vision, from his work-in-progress sketches to his finished illustrations (and how they've shaped the MCU).
Marvel Studios' Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding has been a key creative force in designing the look of the franchise since it launched in 2008 with Iron Man and ComicBook.com has shared a couple of preview pages from the book.
There are some amazing shots of Captain America rallying Earth's Mightiest Heroes to battle Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, but one shot, in particular, has been generating discussion among fans on social media.
As you can see below, there were once plans for The Hulk to get his rematch with the Mad Titan in the 2019 blockbuster. It's a great shame this didn't happen because the Jade Giant was never given the chance to get...

Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck is earning high praise and building hype after the film won the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Our own Chris Bumbray even listed it as one of the 10 favorite films of his from the festival. In his review, he states, “Ultimately, Life of Chuck is different for Flanagan because he can fully explore the rich characterizations that define his work without hitting those genre beats. While that might limit his audiences, his fans (of which I am one) will undoubtedly appreciate this detour and find The Life of Chuck a bittersweet tearjerker. More than anything, it’s a warning that our time on earth is limited and that it’s best to find joy wherever we can, even in the most fleeting moments.”

Neon has acquired North American rights to The Life of Chuck, winner of the People’s Choice Award at this month’s Toronto festival (TIFF).
Buyers had been circling the Mike Flanagan-directed Stephen King adaptation, handled by WME Independent and FilmNation for North American and international sales respectively, since the film’s TIFF world premiere.
TIFF’s People’s Choice prize is seen as a bellwether for Oscar consideration, though with Neon planning a summer 2025 theatrical release the film is not likely to be part of this year’s awards race.

Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of the Stephen King novella The Life of Chuck has landed distribution.
Neon will release the movie that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, going on to win the audience award. The anthology film is told in three parts and focuses on the life, internal and external, of Charles Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). Karen Gillan, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mark Hamill also star.
While Flanagan has adapted other King works, specifically in the horror genre, The Life of Chuck has drawn closer comparisons to Frank Darabont’s Shawshank Redemption.
Talking to THR ahead of TIFF, Flanagan said of speaking with King, “When we were doing The Life of Chuck, we talked a lot before production. He has an enormous amount of approvals on things like casting and other details. But when the movie goes, he stays very far away. He says, ‘The movie’s yours and the book is mine.
