“All a good player wants is profit,” says Andy (Emile Hirsch) at the start of Luc Walpoth’s gritty little poker thriller. He explains, in voiceover, how it really all comes down to calculations, to maths – and, of course, the human factor. He’s proud of his professionalism, of his sensible approach, his resistance to temptation. But Andy is full of shit. Just a few minutes into the film, in the course of his evening game, he’s making a bet that he can stay conscious if punched directly in the head.

This and a habit of making similarly impulsive decisions suggests that Andy is not the type to stay out of trouble for long. Like most serious gamblers, he’s trying to pay off debts. His girlfriend Chloe (India Eisley) tries to protect him but is under no illusions. There’s little either of them can do to protect themselves when that game is.

Exclusive: Bleiberg Entertainment has picked up worldwide rights to Degenerate, a crime pic starring Emile Hirsch (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Rory Culkin (Signs, Scream 4).

The film’s cast is rounded out by India Eisley (Curse of Sleeping Beauty), Peter Facinelli (The Twilight Saga), David Keith (An Officer and Gentleman), and Jackie Earle Haley.

The film will have its World Premiere screenings at the upcoming Cannes Marche du Film, where Bleiberg will present the pic to international distributors. The film will be released theatrically in the USA in 2024 by a distributor Bleiberg has said will be revealed during Cannes.

Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has unveiled much of its feature lineup including early highlights from several sidebars for this year’s online 25th edition, with the full program to be announced in July.

Fantasia’s preliminary lineup is highlighted by a glut of world and premieres including Edoardo Vitaletti’s “The Last Thing Mary Saw”; fest regular Richard Bates Jr.’s “King Knight”; Mikhael Bassilli and Luc Walpoth’s “Baby Money”; Canadian actor-turned-director Mark O’Brien’s debut “The Righteous”; “Hellbender” from John Adams, Toby Poser, and Zelda Adams; and the highly anticipated directorial debut of former Fantasia winning writer Travis Taute’s (“Number 37”) “Indemnity.”

Available to audiences across Canada, Fantasia will run Aug. 5-25 and present screenings, panels and workshops on its digital platform, hosted for the second year running by Festival Scope and Shift72. Canadian genre festival Fantasia has unveiled the first crop of titles that will screen at its 25th edition, which is set to take place virtually August 5-25.

As per last year, the event will run on a platform created by Festival Scope and Shift72 and will feature screenings, panels and workshops, available to audiences in Canada. Organizers continue to discuss with local authorities about the possibility of adding a limited range of physical events, they said.

This year’s edition will have an enhanced focus on Japanese cinema. Below, the first wave of confirmed titles is listed, with the full program announcement to follow in late July. As previously announced, Fantasia will open with Quebec-set zom-com Brain Freeze.

CSI alum Gary Dourdan will take on the lead role of Adam Turner in Memoria, an indie sci-fi drama written by Alice Del Corso. Production-Finance company, Buffalo 8, has come on board to executive produce the project. Philip Thomas Morelli is directing the film, which is set in the near future where a special high-tech device that expands brain potential has created a wide gap in society. A social worker with a secret identity has got five days to unveil a dark truth hidden by a powerful scientist and save his family from harm. Jordan Garrett and Grady Craig are the executive producers on behalf of Buffalo 8, which is part of BondIt Media Capital. Production is slated to take place sometime next year in Atlanta, Georgia.
