- Sued over how his championship fight with Reuben Carter was depicted in "The Hurricane" (1999) and settled out of court for an undisclosed sum. According to the Los Angeles Times, the DVD version of the film includes commentary by the director, Norman Jewison, noting that liberties were taken in the fight scenes.
