Exclusive: Liza Treyger’s first hour-long stand-up special Night Owl is set to premiere globally on Netflix on January 28, sources tell Deadline.

Filmed in New York City, the special sees Treyger touch on her friends who are parents, hating other people’s husbands, and lying to herself about how high she really is. It comes on the heels of Glittercheese, a half-hour she taped for Comedy Central, as well as a half-hour she put together for Netflix stand-up collection The Degenerates. Not only is this year’s race for Best Picture said to be one of the most open we’ve had for years, but The Life Of Chuck would win TIFF’s coveted People’s Choice Award, historically a strong indicator that a film would go on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Twelve of the last 14 winners have gone on to do so.

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan believes that “Physical media is critical,” which is not a belief that was shared by his former employers at the Netflix streaming service. Flanagan recently said that he tried very hard to get Netflix to release the work he did for them on Blu-ray and DVD, but they “refused at every turn.” But while several Flanagan projects remain on Netflix and aren’t available on physical media, he did confirm earlier this year that he has taken his 2016 film Hush away from the streaming service so he can give it a long-awaited physical media release. Horror enthusiasts have something to look forward to as Kate Siegel (Hush) and David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) will be starring together in the upcoming zombie film Epilogue, which will be produced by one of the kings of horror, Mike Flanagan. Below, we shared all there is to know about this movie so far.

Described as an action-horror flick, Epilogue will be directed by Michael Fimognari. Fimognari is known for directing episodes of the Netflix horror series The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher. He will be helming this movie from a script co-written by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.

The story takes place a year after the zombie apocalypse is believed to have ended, and follows a desperate couple searching for a cure for their infected daughter. Although Siegel and Dastmalchian's roles in the film haven't been revealed, our guess is that they'll play the couple.

Mike Flanagan and David Dastmalchian are both prominent figures in the horror world, so it’s somewhat surprising that their first collaboration came not on a horror project, but on Flanagan’s upcoming movie The Life of Chuck – which, despite being a Stephen King adaptation, is a drama. Today, Deadline has announced that Flanagan and Dastmalchian are set to work together again… and this time the project is a horror film. Flanagan will be producing Epilogue, which Dastmalchian will star in alongside Flanagan’s wife and frequent collaborator Kate Siegel. Michael Fimognari, who worked as cinematographer on most of Flanagan’s work and directed episodes of The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher (not to mention the films To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: Always and Forever), will be directing, working from a screenplay by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.

The found footage horror anthology series V/H/S was launched in 2012, with the sequels V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral following in 2013 and 2014. There was a spin-off called SiREN in 2016, then the franchise went dormant for a few years… before being revived by the Shudder streaming service, which has had great success delivering a new V/H/S movie every year. There was V/H/S/94 in 2021, V/H/S/99 in 2022, V/H/S/85 in 2023, and V/H/S/Beyond earlier this month. Fresh out of New York Comic Con tonight, Shudder has officially announced that eighth franchise installment V/H/S/8 will be coming to the horror streaming service in 2025.

Created by Bloody Disgusting and Brad Miska, the found footage horror anthology franchise V/H/S kicked off in 2012 and has to date spawned six sequels including V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99 and V/H/S/85, and two spin-offs, Siren and Kids vs. Aliens.

The seventh instalment in the long-running found footage franchise, V/H/S/Beyond, sees the series change its focus somewhat, from straight forward horror to a science fiction/horror hybrid. While it doesn’t quite follow Jason and the Leprechaun into space, most of the segments do involve aliens or other sci-fi elements.

Directed by Jay Cheel the film’s wraparound “Abduction, Adduction” begins that trend as Mitch Horowitz, host of Alien Encounters: Fact or Fiction, hosts an investigation of a pair of VHS tapes allegedly found at a flea market, and said to be proof of alien visitation.

That segues into “Stork”, directed by Jordan Downey who co-wrote it with Kevin Stewart based on artwork by Oleg Vdovenko.

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan believes that “Physical media is critical,” which is not a belief that was shared by his former employers at the Netflix streaming service. Flanagan recently said that he tried very hard to get Netflix to release the work he did for them on Blu-ray and DVD, but they “refused at every turn.” But while several Flanagan projects remain on Netflix and aren’t available on physical media, he did confirm earlier this year that he has taken his 2016 film Hush away from the streaming service so he can give it a long-awaited physical media release. The 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release is coming from Scream Factory on November 26th (copies are available for purchase at This Link) – but before we reach that date, Shout! Not only is Mike Flanagan’s home invasion horror movie Hush back on Digital for the first time in years, it’s also getting released in theaters next week!

Shout! Studios, in collaboration with Flanagan, Intrepid Pictures, and Blumhouse, announced today that Hush is finally coming to U.S. theaters for a special engagement beginning October 16.

From the press release, “The film has been fully restored and approved by Flanagan. This eagerly anticipated theatrical engagement will showcase a newly restored version of Hush for the first time on the big screen. Additionally, the event screening will feature a livestream Q&a with filmmaker Mike Flanagan and the film’s co-writer and star Kate Siegel. The live Q&a, featuring Flanagan and Siegel, is set to be held at Vidiots in Eagle Rock, California, immediately after the screening, and will be livestreamed to select theaters nationwide.”

Making her directorial debut for “V/H/S/Beyond” with the segment “Stowaway,” Kate Siegel knows she’s asking the world to see her differently. She just doesn’t want to think about it.

“I find it easy to talk about my acting, and I find it easy to talk about filmmaking, but I find it hard to talk about my place in the industry because I don’t want a sense of that,” Siegel told IndieWire. “I can’t allow that to get inside or it might take root and grow a really nasty tree.”

Review: While the last few entries in the V/H/S series have covered specific years like 1999, 1994, and 1985. I’m glad to see the series leaving behind the year-specific branding, and therefore opening the story up to more possibilities. As great as some of those segments were, others felt very constrained by the time. In V/H/S/Beyond, the found VHS tapes claim to prove the existence of extraterrestrial life. Many a horror franchise has been temporarily goosed by an injection of sci-fi — even the slasher at the center of the “Friday the 13th” series went into orbit in the 2001 “Jason X” — but that element doesn’t do a lot to distinguish “V/H/S/Beyond.” This seventh entry in the ersatz found-footage omnibus series should be another reliable draw for genre platform Shudder, where it begins streaming Oct. 4. And the ongoing overall enterprise continues to have value as a launching pad for up-and-coming talents. But despite its new thematic wrinkle, the five segments here feel familiar in ideas and unmemorable in execution. It’s a middling addition to a variably inspired anthology brand that will no doubt trundle on through more installments yet.

Kate Siegel is happy to get very real about extraterrestrial life very quickly. When asked if she believes in aliens, she offers a specific and chilling response.

“I’m a huge sci-fi reader…Ray Bradbury is one of my favorite authors of all time,” she says. “In the world right now there’s a lot of discourse about aliens being real. The needle is turning towards, ‘Yes, aliens exist.’ It’s a matter of when and where we will contact them, and not if they exist. I imagine that aliens are here on this planet and we’ll end up realizing it’s something obvious, like an octopus or a fungi structure is actually an alien that had been here forever. I think the most terrifying realization would be that they were under our noses all the time.”

Its that spooky time of year and Shudder is here with the return of the VHS franchise, V/H/S/Beyond, the seventh installment featuring six new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape.

Directed by Jay Cheel, Jordan Downey, Christian Long & Justin Long, Justin Martinez, Virat Pal, Kate Siegel, the film airs Friday, October 4.

The movie is sitting at 90% over on Rotten Tomatoes and had its world premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest. In their coverage, Fangoria said the segments, “knocked it out of the park on this one.”

The V/H/S franchise started in 2012 and fizzled out after three entries, but Shudder’s relaunch in 2021 proved popular enough to make a new anthology horror flick a yearly October tradition. This year’s release, V/H/S/Beyond, is incredibly refreshing, taking the franchise in a very different direction to exciting and gripping results.

V/H/S/Beyond Review

While the past few entries of V/H/S have all been centered around a specific year, Beyond is (for the most part) focused on sci-fi and aliens. While it’s less of a unique concept — there have been plenty of sci-fi/horror anthologies — the team of filmmakers that have been assembled for V/H/S/Beyond has knocked it out of the park, delivering one of the best entries not just in the franchise but in the genre as a whole.

Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) returns to the world of Stephen King with The Life of Chuck, and Variety reports today that Neon (Longlegs) is “closing a distribution deal” to acquire the film in the wake of it winning the People’s Choice Award at TIFF.

Variety speculates, “The film will likely be released in the summer of 2025.”

Tom Hiddleston plays the title character in The Life of Chuck, based on the 2020 Stephen King short story of the same name. The film just World Premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival for its 49th edition, running from September 5–15, 2024.

Chiwetel Ejiofor (Rob Peace), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Jacob Tremblay (The Toxic Avenger), and Mark Hamill (Star Wars) will also star in the upcoming Stephen King adaptation, alongside Matthew Lillard (Five Nights at Freddy’s) and Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street).
