The stepchildren are genuinely terrific in this switch on the usual dynamic where the stepmother is the bad guy

Inaccurately titled horror film The Unfamiliar purees together an assortment of tired tropes with just enough originality and admirable craftsmanship to make 89 minutes of jump scares and twists visible from outer space reasonably bearable. Its first move is to make us wonder whether main protagonist Izzy (Jemima West), a British army doctor just home from Afghanistan, is really picking up on weird supernatural shenanigans in her rural home or suffering from acute post-traumatic stress disorder. Something definitely doesn’t seem right with her husband Ethan (Christopher Dane) who has suddenly shifted away from studying Polynesian totems (there’s a particularly scary looking one in the baby’s bedroom) in favour of writing children’s fiction. Dark Matter Studios have today announced the release of The Unfamiliar, a thrilling new British film directed by Henk Pretorius and starring Jemima West, Christopher Dane, Rebecca Hanssen, Rachel Lin and Harry McMillan-Hunt.

The Unfamiliar tells the story of British Army Doctor, Elizabeth “Izzy” Cormack, who returns from war to rekindle her relationship with her estranged family. Izzy notices numerous inexplicable activities in her house that her husband believes are due to her suffering from Ptsd as a consequence of war. Izzy militantly pieces the daunting puzzle together to reveal a terrifying, invisible enemy that has infested her entire family. In a heroic attempt to save her family, she is pulled into a dark underworld in Hawaii to explore ancient mythology.

Los Angeles-based Myriad Pictures’ genre label Scoundrel Media has acquired international rights excluding the UK and South Africa to horror thriller The Unfamiliar and will kick off sales at the Cannes virtual market next month.

Vertical Entertainment will handle the North American release on the story starring Jemima West from The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones as a British Army doctor who returns from battle with what she thinks is Ptsd only to discover that she is being attacked by malevolent spirits.

Henk Pretorius directed from a screenplay by Jennifer Nicole Stang, and the cast includes Christopher Dane.

Elle Fanning, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, Abbey Lee, Bella Heathcote and Jena Malone have signed on to co-star in Nicolas Winding Refn’s next feature.

“After making Drive and falling madly in love with the electricity of Los Angeles, I knew I had to return to tell the story of The Neon Demon,” Winding Refn said.

Principal photography will begin in Los Angeles on March 30. Gaumont and Wild Bunch are co-selling the title.

Wim Wenders’ Les Beaux Jours D’Aranjuez

This adaptation of the play by Peter Handke was announced by Alfama’s Paulo Branco during the Efm. It will star Reda Kateb and Sophie Semin. Wenders is expected to shoot in June.

Deals have also closed with First International Productions for France; Italia Film for the Middle East; Tanweer Enlightenment Corp for Turkey and with Daro Film Distribution for Africa, Albania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and former Yugoslavia.

All deals were negotiated by Caroline Couret-Delègue of Metrodome International.

Directed by Phil Hawkins (The Last Showing) from a script by Christopher Dane, the film tells the story of four battle-weary Crusaders who embark on a mission to track down the evil predator who has abducted all the men and children from a devastated village.

Exclusive: Shooting has begun on Crusader action film, with a cast that includes Game of Thrones’ Kristian Nairn, aka Hodor.

Metrodome International is to launch worldwide sales on action adventure The Four Warriors at the American Film Market (Afm) next month.

The film, which began principal photography on Oct 4, is shooting in Hampshire and the South of England with Colin Lloyd making his directorial debut from a script by Christopher Dane.

The ensemble cast includes Kristian Nairn, best known as Hodor in Game of Thrones, along with Christopher Dane, Fergal Philips, Alex Childs, Hadrian Howard and Glenn Speers.

Producers are Alexandra Baranska and Phil Hawkins for Philm Flicks, whose recent credits include the $2m psychological thriller The Last Showing¸ which starred Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street).

John Foster (Christopher Dane) is fed up. He’s lost his job, bills are piling up, his partner keeps nagging him. Along with his friend and fellow couch potato Chris (Lee Boardman) he decides to put some silly things on “an online auction site” (*cough* eBay) including soiled underwear and himself. A regional news crew catches up with him one morning as the auction is drawing to a close and then follow him in real time as the clock counts down to the end of his selling of himself. He and Chris are bewildered by all of the attention, then seduced by the promise from ambitious reporter Maia (Jessica Blake) of fame and fortune, before things really start to get out of hand with locals and international news hotshots gathering outside his house, all keen to see what will happen. A budget Lord of the Rings prequel put together by hundreds of people working for nothing has recorded nearly a million hits on video streaming sites

On the eastern flank of Epping Forest, a short walk in from the town of Debden, there is a huge tree, lying on its side, upended by a storm. It was in this clearing that independent film-maker Kate Madison, along with dozens of game volunteers, filmed Born of Hope, a homemade prequel to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy that has caused a great stir since its release in December. A production pulled together over four years with a budget of a mere £25,000 – about a tenth of one per cent of the cost of Jackson's epic – it has impressed critics and recorded close to a million views on video streaming sites. The upended tree seems a fitting place for it all to have begun.

Using her and#163;25,000 ($39,000) life savings Kate Madison made her own Lord of the Rings film titled Born of Hope, and as the Daily Mail points out it is getting plenty of play online and is ready to watch at the bottom of this post.

Checking out the YouTube page it is marked as in response to The Hunt for Gollum, another fan made Rings-related feature which I discussed back in May 2009 and is available to watch right here. The Hunt for Gollum follows Aragorn (Adrian Webster), the Heir of Isildur as he sets out to find the creature Gollum (voiced by Gareth Brough and Jason Perino). The creature must be found to discover the truth about the ring, and to protect the future Ringbearer.
