The actor recently wrapped filming on Vibhu Puri’s “Ul Jalool Ishq,” a poetic drama co-starring Naseeruddin Shah about an Urdu letterpress owner searching for a reclusive poet. “It’s a beautiful, intimate story between one person who runs a barely surviving Urdu [press] and he wants to desperately hold on to this letterpress, but nothing is getting printed anymore in Urdu,” Varma tells Variety.

As Indians we have always been proud of how our ancestors were way ahead of their times, giving the world some revolutionary concepts and inventions. So ‘Aryabhatta gave the world the number 0’ is often our trademark reply to India being called a backward and third world country in almost any movie. Taking this a bit further is Vibhu Puri’s Hawaizaada based on a theory that an Indian was the first to build an airplane before the Wright brothers did.

You may have heard it in every film that has been made on the theme of Colonial India from Manmohan Desai's Mard to Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan. Somewhere or the other the Britishers in Indian films are bound to refer to Indian as 'bloody Indians' No more so. For Vibhu Puri's delicately drawn period film Hawaizaada which is set in Colonial India, the censor board in all its wisdom asked the 'bloody' to be removed from the 'bloody Indian.' Sighs the director Vibhu Puri, "I had no choice but to replace the word 'bloody' in 'bloody Indian' with 'crazy'. I am aware that the Britishers in our films have been shown to use the term 'bloody Indian' in numerous films. But if I had insisted I'd have got a 'UA' certificate instead of 'U'. So I preferred to change the supposedly offensive word as it made no difference to my narrative.

Presented by Reliance Entertianment, Hawaizaada is inspired from the life and works of Shivkar Talpade who flew the first ever unmanned plane 8 years before the Wright Brothers. Set in 1895 during the British Raj, the film is directed by Vibhu Puri. Commenting on the development, Sanjeev Lamba CEO, Reliance Entertainment said "We are extremely happy to receive the tax free grant. This will ensure that the film will reach out to a much larger audience base. The achievements of Shivkar Talpade are largely undocumented and even un-credited. This film is our attempt to highlight one of his biggest achievements of flying the first plane ever at Chowpatty, Mumbai, in 1895. When Ayushmann Khurrana made his debut in Bollywood with Vicky Donor along with John Abraham's production and Shoojit Sircar as the director, the trio decided to make yet another film together titled Hamara Bajaj. Despite the fact that John Abraham, Shoojit Sircar and Ayushmann Khurrana, later got busy with other projects, the film was always on the cards until a title controversy turned it all topsy-turvy. Apparently the automobile company Bajaj Group decided to take legal action against the makers for using the tagline of their scooter commercials, 'Hamara Bajaj', as a part of their film's title. This ongoing battle led to a delay and the cast and crew moved on to other projects. But now, the makers have finally narrowed down on the title Agra Ka Daabra. Talking about the connection, Ayushmann revealed that his character which was initially named Sanjay Bajaj will now have Daabra as his last name.

Every Yashraj hero seems to be mastering one accent or the other. While Aditya Roy Kapur desperately grappled with the Urdu in Habib Faisal's Daawat-e-Ishq, Sushant Singh Rajput is trying to sound as Bengali as he can in Dibakar Bannerjee's Detective Byomkesh. Ayushmann Khurrana who had to learn Marathi for Vibhu Puri's Bambai Fairytale is on to a difference tongue-trip now. Ayushmann is getting a hang of the Bhojpuri of his naïve-as-hell character from Hardwar in Sharat Katariya's Dum Laga Ke Haisha. Says a source close to the project, "The film is being shot in Hardwar. Ayushmann plays a simpleton named Prem and his very clever wife is played by newcomer Bhumi Pednekar. Ayushman's Prem is nothing like Salman Khan's Prem in Sooraj Barajatya's films. Ayushmann is modelled on Raj Kapoor in Shri 420. He is naïve and lacks worldly wisdom to the point of being a social misfit.

It seems every young actor is doing an accent. While Aditya Roy Kapoor had to work really hard on his Urdu diction in Habib Faisal's Daawat-e-Ishq, Ayushmann Khurrana and Sushant Singh Rajput have been practising their Marathi and Bangla for their respective characters in Vibhu Puri's Mumbaai Fairytale and Dibakar Bannerjee's Detective Byomkesh Bakshy respectively. Ranveer Singh who sported a dead-on Gujarati diction in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela won't find it that easy to sail through the dialogues of Slb's historical Bajirao Mastani. Now this development has caught us by surprise. While it is a known fact that Ayushmann Khurrana has just been signed for a period film, what was kept as a well guarded secret all this while was its very title. Well, we have managed to catch hold of it and it goes as Bambai Fairy Tales. The surprising part here though is the fact that before Ayushmann, it was Abhay Deol who was finalised for the film. "Vibhu Puri was in talks with Abhay Deol for Bambai Fairy Tales till middle of last year. Except for a formal announcement being made, it was all but confirmed that the two would be collaborating for the film," informs a source. However, there was no development on that in months to follow and it had seemed that the project was abandoned. However, with the plans being revived for the film, the return of...

The buzz is that Abhay Deol is all set to star in debutant director Vibhu Puri's Bambai Fairy Tale. It is a period love story set in the city of dreams, Mumbai. Apparently, Abhay will not only star in the film but also produce it. It's been a while since we last saw Abhay in an out and out romantic film. Defying his chocolate hero looks, the actor has been quite choosy about doing a love story. Even though he debuted in Imtiaz Ali's Socha Na Tha which was a romantic film, he has rarely been seen in one after, barring Anurag Kashyap's Dev D and the forgettable Aisha. His last film Shanghai was a political thriller. So it will be a nice change to see him in a romantic avatar once again. A source close to Abhay reveals, "After Shanghai, Abhay was looking to do something entirely different.

Every aspiring filmmaker looks up to his mentor to be at the helm of things when they start with their debut venture and so did Vibhu Puri, associate director and co-writer of Saawariya. Puri was all set with his directorial venture Chenab Gandhi which was to be produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. But Bhansali made Puri wait for almost a year, something that wasn't appreciated by the young filmmaker. Not wasting anymore time, Vibhu approached Ravi Chopra, who will now be producing the film. Though one would expect a lot of bad blood to run between Bhansali and Puri, but it isn't so. In fact, Puri he has even penned four songs in Guzaarish. As for Chenab Gandhi, there is news that many couple of stars have been short listed for the cast, but their names are yet to be revealed.

They both picked up Filmfare Best Actor awards when they came together in Paa, but writer-director Vibhu Puri's dream of seeing them share the same frame in his ambitious film Chenab Gandhi may remain just that - a dream.Puri, who has written the script of the film, had teamed up with Sanjay Leela Bhansali to translate it into celluloid. But there's word that the two have had a fallout and the first casualty is their collaboration on Chenab Gandhi. So while Sanjay Leela Bhansali may still harbour a desire to go ahead with the film, there's little he can do since the story belongs to Vibhu Puri. Which also means that after he completes Guzaarish, (incidentally, Vibhu Puri also co-wrote this one), Bhansali will have to work on a new idea for his next.It emerges that the bone of contention between Bhansali and Puri was that the...

After Sanjay Gadhvi's proposed Parisian romance 7 Days & 7 Nights In Paris which apparently has now been relocated to Punjab, we now have the Rajeev Khandelwal starrer Joker being relocated from New Zealand to Ooty at the eleventh hour. The emotional father-son story directed by Kumar Gaurav's cousin Vikram Tuli, featuring Rajeev with the 5-year old Shrey Bawa was supposed to be shot from the end of January to the middle of February in New Zealand. But the film's main drama has now been shot in Ooty. Rajeev feels the shift of location makes no difference to the essential emotions of the film. He has never felt more challenged as an actor. Quips Rajeev, "That's because I've never had a more challenging co-star. Shrey Bawa who plays my son is just 5. But he's a veteran compared with me. He has done innumerable ads. And he played Priyanka Chopra and Bobby Deol's son in Dostana.

Chenab Gandhi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, is in deep waters. First Harman Baweja walked out of it. Then things didn’t work out to sign on John Abraham. And when Rajeev Khandelwal was signed on for the film, Bhansali and director Vibhu Puri are planning to even replace him.
They were supposed to start shooting for the film in September but delayed because of Rajeev’s shows. Now the director and producer are planning to replace him as they feel he will not match Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan as he is an indie actor. They are looking for a replacement.
