Willie Aames, best known for his teen actor roles in Eight is Enough and Charles in Charge, is set to star alongside Natalie Grace in the dark comedy Armageddon Road.
The indie, written, directed and produced by Karen Lam, is shooting in British Columbia. Set in Las Vegas in 1976, Armageddon Road follows a hapless ex-con hired by a mob boss to chauffeur his girlfriend for an evening, only to find his passenger dies of a cocaine overdose.
After her body is taken over by one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the driver is convinced to take her to what will be Armageddon in the Nevada desert. Opiate Pictures Inc. and Black Moon Media are producing the film that will use miniature sets created by Gary Young (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, The Predator and Godzilla) to be projected on an LED volume wall the actors will use as a backdrop for their performances.

Evangeline and Bring It On: Cheer or Die director Karen Lam drew inspiration from Japanese films in general and an experimental silent film called Pages of Madness in particular when crafting her horror movie The Curse of Willow Song – and it seems to have turned out pretty well, as Fangoria reminds us that The Curse of Willow Song won the Best British Columbia Film award when it premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival way back in 2020. Now the film is finally making its way to DVD and digital, thanks to Uncork’d Entertainment, and a trailer can be seen in the embed above.
The DVD and digital release is scheduled for September 26th.

The Bring It On franchise has been around since 2000, taking viewers into the world of cheerleading.
The seventh entry in the series, Bring It On: Cheer Or Die, is a complete overhaul, adding a slasher element that was not present in the prior installments.
Director Karen Lam wanted to switch things up for fans of the franchise.
"I think of this one as the Halloween special, the way a lot of franchise shows have a holiday-themed stand-alone," Lam tells TV Fanatic.
"It’s definitely in the horror category, but it’s a throwback to the fun horror from the 80s, and hopefully something that bridges the fans of Bring It On with horror fans who want a film that’s campy and lighter than really dark fare."
Lam says she considers it the “gateway drug” to horror for teen girls.

No, you’re not imagining things, I’m reviewing a film from the Bring It On franchise. Bring It On: Cheer or Die takes the never-ending series into horror territory and revisits the classic slasher trope of a killer mascot knocking off the cheer squad. That might not have gotten me curious, but it was a couple of the people involved behind the camera that convinced me to give it a look.
I was familiar with director Karen Lam from her short film Doll Parts which was included in the Shevenge anthology. And the script was co-written by Dana Schwartz (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) and Rebekah McKendry who directed one of the best films I’ve seen this year, Glorious as well as co-writing and co-directing the Christmas horror anthology,...

Left to her own devices, Vancouver-based writer/director Karen Lam would have had a big screening with crew and friends to celebrate the completion of her latest film The Curse of Willow Song. While the pandemic put a kibosh on those plans, Lam still managed to celebrate the milestone with a private drive-in screening and a world premiere at the City's largest film festival.
It's a milestone worth celebrating. Willow Song, which took longer to post-produce than originally anticipated, is Lam's best work yet, an exploration of the monster within and a deep-dive one woman's struggle to take back control over her life after being pushed to the fringes of society by a broken system that pays lip-service to re-integration but does little to actually help anyone achieve that g...

With Clapboard Jungle, filmmaker Justin McConnell brings together two things I’m extremely passionate about: genre-driven documentaries and independent horror. Most people may not know this about me, but years (and years) ago, I created and spearheaded a movement known as Indie Horror Month as a means to help underrepresented content creators in the horror filmmaking community have an opportunity to get their moment in the spotlight. It’s been something I’ve wanted to resurrect, especially because it seems so hard these days for truly independent voices to be heard, but trying to carve out that time has been difficult.
That being said, when I read the description for Clapboard Jungle, I knew this was going to be something that would be extremely pertinent to my interests and McConnell didn’t let me down. The project is an enlightening look at the ups and downs that many indie filmmakers are constantly facing,...

Lifetime Expands ‘Ripped From The Headlines’ Slate with Five Movies Inspired by Ann Rule (Exclusive)
Lifetime has greenlit five new movies for its “Ripped from the Headlines” slate, all from best-selling true crime author Ann Rule, Variety has learned exclusively. Additionally, Ashley Williams and Robin Givens will make their small-screen directorial debuts with two of these films.
These five films come from Rule’s books “Danger in the Dorm,” “Mortan Danger,” “Practice to Deceive,” “Bitter Harvest” and “Empty Promises” and are being prepped for a summer launch. As part of Lifetime’s Broader Focus Initiative, four out of the five directors of these films are women, and three out of the five films were written by women.
“Bitter Harvest” tells the story of a brilliant doctor and mother who had the epitome of a picture perfect life with three children, an adoring husband and a beautiful house in an opulent neighborhood — but behind the curtain was a rocky marriage that takes a terrible turn and leaves her family in ruin.

There’s almost no such thing as a perfect horror anthology. By definition, the quality of the stories is going to vary so that even in those beloved anthologies where every segment might be considered good—your Trick ’r Treats and Creepshows, for example—we tend to rank our favorites and least favorites. There’s an old maxim that states that any anthology is only as good as its worst segment, but that’s an ideology to which I’ve never subscribed. My experience has always been that the good segments tend to stand out, while the weaker ones melt away in my memory. The beauty of even an uneven anthology is that each new segment offers a blank slate: a chance to course correct after a weak entry or to build on a strong one.

Jonathan Weichsel: So, you have a new movie out called Peelers. I watched the trailer this afternoon and it looks awesome. I know you star in it. Care to tell me about your character?
Wren Walker: You liked the teaser? Awesome!! I play Blue Jean Douglas, a baseball loving former stripper turned owner of Titty Balls, a strip club in a nowhere town. She's tough as hell.
Jonathan Weichsel: Sounds awesome! I know you beat out two hundred other actresses for the role. What was the audition process like?
Wren Walker: I was literally the last girl to audition. I found the ad on Craigslist and was stoked to see if I could be in a horror movie, since I'm a huge fan of the genre myself.

Eight women directors from across Canada have been selected to attend the 20th annual session of Women In the Director’s Chair (Widc), which includes the pilot program, Widc Story & Leadership. Over the coming months this top-notch group of content creators will develop their feature films and web series, working with an ensemble of hand-picked professional actors, technicians and other industry experts. A major component of the program takes the form of an Industry Immersion at the 15th anniversary Whistler Film Festival (December 2-6), and culminates with a three-month mentorship tailored to advance each director’s project.
Mounting their sophomore feature films are East coast favorites, Mary Walsh ("A Christmas Fury," based on the characters from the riotously-funny TV series "Hatching, Matching and Dispatching"), Anita Reilly McGee ("Black Mammy"), and Widc Feature Film Award-winner, Jordan Canning ("Suck It Up"). Weaving fiction into their prolific body of documentary works from Ontario are, Maya Gallus ("Nights in the Underground"), and Frances-Anne Solomon ("Hero"). Also from Ontario is Nicole Dorsey , developing a debut feature "Black Conflux," along with BC-based actress Ana De Lara ("The Virgin Mary Had a Little Lamb"). Multiple award-winner Marie Clements is developing a new interactive web series "Crooked Bones," based on the true story of First Nations artist, Connie Watts.
"Widc understands that being committed to bringing women’s voices to the screen means investing in the storyteller. Not simply as a “one off” but as a continued partnership between stakeholders who recognize that the development of skill, process, and creation has lasting and profound value,” states Metis actor/ writer/director, Marie Clements. “I am honored to be in this year’s Story & Leadership Program with some of Canada’s most talented and innovative filmmakers."
Award-winning director Rachel Talalay ("Dr. Who," "Tank Girl") will be one of this year’s key mentors focusing on directing action. This year’s line up also includes peer mentors, award-winning Widc alumnae, writer/directors Siobhan Devine ("The Birdwatcher," which premieres at the Whistler Film Festival), and web series creator Karen Lam ("Mythos"), along with popular Widc instructors, writer and Jungian expert, Dr. Carolyn Mamchur , and screen-writer / story consultant Linda Coffey ("These Arms of Mine"). We've been tracking the female revenge thriller Evangeline for a couple of years though it's been a while since we saw anything from the movie other than news that it was playing film festivals here and there but just when I thought we'd never get a chance to see it, in comes an announcement that the movie is headed for release –and soon!

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Uncork'd Entertainment. Director/writer: Karen Lam. Cast: Kat de Lieva, Richard Harmon, Mayumi Yoshida, David Lewis David Lewis and Kelvin Redvers. Evangeline is a revenge tale, from director Karen Lam. This title was completed in 2013, toured festivals and now, the film is set to release on home video formats. Though, this is one release that might best be forgotten. An homage to Alex Proyas' The Crow (1994), Evangeline is more rock video than a true film. Lam's storytelling style brings lots of characters to the screen, none of whom are really developed. Even the protagonist is shallow and mute, through much of the film. As well, so many ideas are introduced into the story, that Evangeline staggers all over the place. Only the visual style, which is often dark and moody, is consistent and well produced. Almost all other film elements are incongruous,...

The Cci-iff, as it’s acronymed, runs completely concurrently with the convention with programming running from morning to night that includes films devoted to comic book-inspired movies, horror movies, sci-fi flicks, comedies and documentaries. There are also several panels on filmmaking sandwiched in between the on-screen entertainment.
The fest also gives out awards. This year’s juror panel includes filmmakers Steven-Charles Jaffee and Kyle Newman, plus entertainment journalist Borys Kit.
Programming blocks are broken up by genre and the full film lineup below gives the exact starting time of each short film. There’s also one feature film screening this year,...

Horror has been in Canada's snow for decades now, starting with the classic Cannibal Girls and Black Christmasin the early '70s, through the classic early Cronenberg years of Shivers, Rabid and The Brood in the late '70s. In the '80s, we got films like Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine and The Gate. In the past decade, we've had flicks like the Ginger Snaps series, Cube and PontyPool. *full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Gravitas Ventures.
**here be spoilers.
Director/writer: Karen Lam.
Stained is an indie picture developed from three different production companies (Angel Entertainment, Opiate Pictures, Goonworks Films). This is director Karen Lam's first feature. And while the first two thirds of the film is struggling to finds its legs, the final third makes up for some slow pacing earlier. There are a few surprises here as well. The only question is: will viewers be able to make it all the way to the end? Stained has just been released this month on video-on-demand and this reviewer would only give this film a tepid recommend.
The story focuses almost exclusively and to its own detriment on Isabelle (Tinsel Korey). Isabelle is a youngish woman who owns a small bookstore in what looks like Saskatoon, Sk, based on this reviewer's travels there.
