The Dinard film festival (2-6 October), traditionally a celebration of all things British, brought its 35th iteration to the seaside city’s screens with a soft relaunch this year, after retitling itself to include Irish films and co-productions. The result was suitably eclectic, with just six films competing for the Hitchcock d’Or, which was voted on by an eight-strong jury of actors and directors. Including The Quiet Girl director Colm Bairéad and House of the Dragon star Phoebe Campbell, the judging panel was headed up by French actress-director-model-singer Arielle Dombasle, a favorite of Claude Lelouch, Éric Rohmer and Alain Robbe-Grillet but more recently seen this summer singing her song “Olympics” to herald the arrival of the Olympic torch in Paris, ahead of the recent games.

The much anticipated standalone sequel to the 1996 Jan de Bont film Twister is finally here and seems to be a hit among the audience and the critics. Directed by Academy Award Nominee Lee Isaac Chung from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, Twisters has all the destruction, mayhem, and cool characters you want in a film like this.
Twisters follows the story of Kate, a former storm chaser, who is lured back into the fields for one last time by her friend, Javi, to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. As she begins working with Javi, Kate meets Tyler Owens, a charming but reckless social media superstar who built his fanbase by chasing storms. As storm season gets more dangerous, Kate, Tyler, and the people in their team find themselves fighting against a storm to survive.

Plot: A former storm chaser (Daisy Edgar-Jones) recovering from a tragedy is convinced by a former colleague to help him chase a series of massive twisters rocking central Oklahoma.
Review: Jump back to the summer of 1996. I was fourteen years old and going to see Twister at the old Famous Eight here in good old Montreal, an old suburban movie theatre that was showing a movie in Thx for the first time ever. I’ll never forget sitting down with a friend to watch Jan de Bont’s classic and being rocked to the core by the amazing VFX and sound – and it remains a favourite of mine. It had a rock solid cast of characters, all of whom were memorable, plus two perfect regular Joe heroes in Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, with the movie, believe it or not, actually a disaster movie quasi remake of the classic screwball comedy His Girl Friday,...

Based out of London, the company will be active across a variety of genres, in both film television, pursuing projects that embody the values of diversity, inclusion, sustainability and equality.
Symphony Films’ first project is Legacy, a dramatic comedy short starring James Purefoy, Luke Norris and Amelia Gething, which marks Hadden-Paton’s first as writer-director, and Night’s first as a producer. In it, a girl brings her fiancé home to meet her father for the first time. But… home is not merely a home. And her father is from a very different world. Social classes and generations clash in this black comedy of manners set in the stunning English countryside, where the responsibility of conserving the family legacy is not for the faint-hearted.

“Twisters” is getting ready to shake up the summer box office.
The disaster movie, a sequel to the 1996 classic “Twister,” has made $10.7 million in Thursday previews at the box office. The Universal film, starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos as storm chasers, is expected to open between $50 million and $55 million this weekend.
“Twisters” comes with a $155 million price tag, so it’ll need to storm the global box office to turn a profit. Warner Bros. is distributing the film internationally, where it’s made $X million so far. It will open in larger markets like France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom this weekend.
Released 28 years after the original film, “Twisters” stars Powell as Tyler Owens, a popular storm chaser on the internet, and Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a meteorologist and ex-tornado chaser who is haunted by a major storm from her past. With her colleague Javi (Ramos...

Two years ago, Brandon Perea delivered a breakout big-screen performance in Jordan Peele’s Nope, and now he’s back in Universal’s latest July event film, Twisters. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Perea plays Boone, who’s nearly unrecognizable from his Nope character, Angel Torres. He is the right hand to Glen Powell’s Tyler Owens, as their team of “tornado wranglers” are the ragtag group of storm chasers that are most similar to Bill (Bill Paxton) and Jo Harding’s (Helen Hunt) motley crew in Jan de Bont’s now-franchise starter, Twister (1996).
Perea’s character is also the closest analogue to Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Dusty from the original film, and while the latter may have had more of a scientific background than Boone’s role as videographer, they’re both devoted friends, tie-dye enthusiasts and the life of the party. Needless to say, the pressure of having...

Jan de Bont’s Twister remains one of the most beloved blockbusters of the 1990s, at least for the millennials who grew up with it. That’s chiefly due to its still-awesome special effects, fashioned at a time when filmmakers were delighting in experimenting with the newfound possibilities of CGI. Each storm was meticulously crafted and impressively tactile, making good on the film’s tagline, “It’ll blow you away.” So why, in an even more advanced cinematic landscape where any phenomenon can be easily created with the click of a computer mouse, does Lee Isaac Chung’s long-gap sequel, Twisters, barely kick up dust?
Twisters lacks any real explicit narrative connection to the original beyond featuring the storm-tracking device nicknamed Dorothy. Our protagonists are approximations of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s characters from Twister, modified just slightly to give off a hint of variation. Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones...

Glen Powell wasn’t supposed to be showing off his body in “Twisters,” but then came the rain, as director Lee Isaac Chung decided at the last minute that Powell should be seen in the natural disaster movie in a wet white T-shirt.
“That was Isaac’s idea,” Powell told me Thursday at the film’s Los Angeles premiere. “I did have a jacket in that scene. He said, ‘I think we’re going to toss the jacket out.’ I was like, ‘Cool.’ And he goes, ‘Also, there’s going to be a rain machine.’ I was like, ‘Ok.’ But then I was like, ‘Wait a minute.’”
The hunky moment in the movie — a sequel to the classic tornado disaster action thriller “Twister” — was met with applause and cheers during the premiere screening.
Powell insists he didn’t do any extra push-ups before shooting the shot. “Not enough,” he said,...

Twisters whipped up a frenzy in London on Monday night as the Lee Isaac Chung disaster epic touched down at Cineworld Leicester Square for its European premiere. Before any tornadoes hit the screen, audience members got some early thrills courtesy of a very special guest in the crowd: Tom Cruise.
The Hollywood superstar attended the screening in support of his Top Gun: Maverick pals, including Glen Powell, who stars in the Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. release opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones, Harry Hadden-Paton and Anthony Ramos. There’s another Top Gun connection: That film’s director, Joseph Kosinski, is credited with story by credit on Twisters, which was written by Mark L. Smith based on characters created by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. Cruise has also long been close to Steven Spielberg, who executive produced the new Twisters as well as the original 1996 film.

The forecast is looking better than good for Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters.
The summer tentpole — featuring a high-wattage cast that includes Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos — is tracking to open to $55 million over the July 19-21 weekend in North America, according to market leader The National Research Group. Universal, which is handling the film domestically, is being more conservative in suggesting $40 million to $45 million considering that tracking has been off as of late in many cases. Some believe Twisters could even do more than $55 million, such as research firm The Quorom, which is predicting $54 million to $61 million.
Warner Bros. International has overseas duties.
Twisters opens 28 years after filmmaker Jan de Bont’s Twister, starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, whipped up a Category 5 storm at the box office. Universal and Chung have been clear in saying that the new film isn’t a sequel, but a “current-day chapter” of the first film.

With great action comes great effort. Glen Powell teased “one of the most incredible action sequences of all time” in this summer’s Twisters, coming July 19.
The actor recounted his experience shooting the storm sequence in a Fandango’s Big Ticket interview, which he says “all happens in a oner.” The appearance was pegged to the film’s tickets going on sale.
“We shot that in December, with a rain machine,” Powell says in the clip. “One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged across a pool by a wire. I think it was the most physical thing that I’ve ever done.”
Daisy Edgar-Jones, Powell’s Twisters co-star, agrees “completely,” she says.
“You’re talking about humans getting sucked up into a tornado,” Powell continues. “But you’re recreating what it’s like to be getting hit by debris and all that stuff. So you’re...

Fans of Downton Abbey are cordially invited to the third motion picture from Focus Features and Carnival Films. The third entry will follow the recent installment, Downton Abbey: A New Era. The most recent outing from the popular British drama had been released back in 2022. Our own Chris Bumbray would mention in his review of A New Era, “Show mastermind Julian Fellows has written this as fan service, and it shows. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you’re looking to finally get into Downton Abbey, this is a bad place to start as it not only assumes you’ve seen every episode, but it assumes you know them well. Just when you thought it was safe to forget which fork goes with which plate, Focus Features has announced a return to Downton Abbey. Currently titled “Downton Abbey 3” (surely a “Colon Something Something” is coming) this is the third theatrically-released feature film in the franchise that first launched on British television in 2010.
Series creator Julian Fellowes, Oscar-winning writer of Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park” (a very “Downton”-ish film), is writing the script. Simon Curtis, who directed “Downton Abbey: The New Era” in 2022, is back on board. His other work includes “My Week With Marilyn,” and “Woman in Gold.”
The film will boast Paul Giamatti, reprising the part of Harold Levinson, seen in the fourth season Christmas special from 2013. (That appearance won Giamatti an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor.) Also new to the film franchise are Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. “Twisters” executive producer Steven Spielberg didn’t want Anthony Ramos to use a Southern accent for his role, according to the actor.
Ramos, who plays storm chaser Javi in “Twisters,” said in an Entertainment Weekly interview that he thought his character would have a Southern accent.
“Then I heard Steven [Spielberg] was like, ‘No, I want him to do it in his dialect,'” Ramos recalled. “It was a little surprising to me, but it was really cool, to me, because I’ve never heard someone who speaks in my vernacular — especially this New York, Northeast, Latino dialect that I have — in a movie of this size, in a place like Oklahoma. It makes me feel it’s possible for a kid from the hood to go to a school like Ou, study meteorology, be this brilliant meteorologist and storm chaser. This is something that a kid like me could do.

There are plenty of ways to describe what happened at Caesars Palace on Wednesday when Universal Pictures delivered Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters to the Colosseum stage. Some examples: The film whipped up a frenzy; exclusive footage spun through Sin City; action scenes blew away theater owners, etc., etc.
All of the above work as Universal debuted never-before-seen scenes of the summer release courtesy of Chung and his castmembers Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, who turned up for an extended introduction.
Chung was first to walk out — an appearance that marked his first time at CinemaCon — and the director said that many in the audience might be wondering why he decided to jump into summer blockbuster tentpole territory after carving out a career in independent film. “I’ve been fascinated by tornadoes all my life,” he said, adding that he grew up in Arkansas, where tornadoes were just a way of life.

The disaster film Twister (watch it Here) was a massive success for Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment when it was released during the summer movie season in 1996. Made on a budget of $90 million, it earned almost $500 million at the global box office and ranked as the tenth highest-grossing film of all time. Quickly cashing in with a sequel would have made a lot of sense. But while there were rumors – including a memorable one that said the sequel would involve a tornado hitting a major city – a follow-up never made it into production. Until now. Universal and Amblin are reviving the Twister IP with a film called Twisters, which is set to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024. Twenty-eight years later, will it be able to replicate or surpass the success of its predecessor? We’ll have to wait and see. But for know, we’re going to...

Twenty-seven years after the release of the blockbuster disaster film Twister (watch it Here), Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment have finally put a follow-up on the fast track to release – but they’re not calling it a sequel. Scheduled to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024, Twisters has been described as a “new chapter” in what is about to become a franchise… and during an interview with Vogue, cast member Glen Powell – who can currently be seen on the big screen in the romantic comedy Anyone but You – confirmed that the film tells a standalone story. But even without any connection to the original film, he believes that it’s something that will be able to connect to everyone around the world.
Powell told Vogue (with thanks to Deadline for sharing the text) that Twisters is “definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one.

Glen Powell is preparing his Broadway debut and is working with producer Ryan Murphy to make it happen.
The Anyone but You star is reuniting with the Scream Queens co-creator, the horror series in which he starred back in 2015, playing the role of Chad Radwell.
“Ryan Murphy and I, we’re actually making a musical together. We don’t really have any plans to be back in the television world together, but we’ll be on Broadway together,” Powell told Vogue.
When asked if the Broadway musical had anything to do with his character in the 2015 series, Powell said, “The Chad Radwell Musical. That’s the funniest idea. Just the Dickie Dollar Scholars. The amount of people that come up to me about Scream Queens is shocking, probably more than anything else I’ve done. Maybe it ages like a fine wine.”

When you look at the sprawling ensemble that is "Downton Abbey," it can be easy to lose track of all of these characters, especially when you're having to alternate between the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs staff. But series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") has done a great job of giving both clusters equal attention, as the show hops from one character's plotline to the next. Of course, the breadth of a television show with six seasons allows ample time to make sure no one gets lost in the shuffle.
As the PBS series made the transition to the big screen in 2019 with "Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture," and again this year with "Downton Abbey: A New Era," I wondered if Fellowes would be able to give as much attention to Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, while also allowing characters like Rob James-Collier's Thomas Barrow enough...

It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Downton Abbey has had a long and exciting run.
We had six seasons of, holiday-themed specials, and two movies.
Hugh Bonneville, who has been with the franchise since the beginning, thinks the franchise could be over after the latest movie.
“I suspect, if there is [a new series], it would be a reboot. An origin story or something like that,” the star said to The Hollywood Reporter of rumors of a TV comeback.
The star said that Bridgerton highlighted that "there's clearly an appetite for these sorts of shows."
"Bridgerton has been a magnificent success,” he continued.
“So if you can capture the younger generation to enjoy people in frocks, then go for it.”
Bonneville went on to state that it is "immensely unlikely" the original cast would return for future projects.
“It’s seven years since we did the TV show. Returning as we did for those two films was really lovely,...
