Country music videos in 2018 were a mix of the poignant and the empowering, as some clips movingly told end-of-life tales and others glamorously celebrated independence. Others still lampooned the very art of making videos. Here’s the 10 must-watch clips of the year.

A woman loses her life to opioids, leaving behind a young daughter and an elderly father. The aftermath is shown in a series of quick vignettes: an emotional breakdown at school; a trip to a fruit orchard; a family visitation at the gravesite.

An idea for a new energy drink leads to intellectual theft, sexual manipulation and revenge in this frenetic comedy set in the cutthroat world of marketing. Shiloh Fernandez is the young marketeer who pitches his daring new campaign to a gorgeous big company exec (Amber Heard), only for their respective plans to come unstuck when his sneaky roommate (Twilight's Kellan Lutz) steals the big idea. Max Barry's 1999 novel provides the ammunition for this satirical swipe at consumer culture and corporate naughtiness.

Amber Heard goes corporate in Syrup.
Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood) and Amber Heard (The Joneses) star in the comedy-tinged corporate drama Syrup.
Slacker-ish business school grad Scat (Fernandez) comes up with a million-dollar idea for a new soft drink to pitch to a major beverage manufacturer, though the drink itself is seemingly a worthless potable. The drink is nonetheless embraced by the company, but Scat is screwed over by his roommate (Kellan Lutz, Immortals), who claims all the credit. Teaming up with a luscious lady executive (Heard), Scat plot to get back the credit, the money…and some serious payback.
Directed and co-written by Aram Rappaport and adapted by co-scenarist Max Barry’s 2000 book, Syrup also features Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect), Rachel Dratch and Kirstie Alley (as herself!).

What a delicious irony. The same weekend the shameless product placement vehicle The Internship hits North American cinemas, discerning audiences will also be able to seek out Syrup, an adaptation of the brilliantly satirical Max Barry novel of the same name which takes square aim at marketing bullshit. Directed by Aram Michael Rappaport, Syrup stars Amber Heard, Shiloh Fernandez, Kellan Lutz and Brittany Snow, and while the short synopsis doesn't do the story justice here it is: A lowly marketing exec enlists the help of a scarily beautiful, brainy co-worker to save his million-dollar idea from corporate espionage in this scathingly funny send up of sex, celebrity, and greed. For those wondering about the headline, Fukk is the name of a fictional energy drink used in the book and film,...

Magnolia Pictures' Syrup opens on June 7th under the direction of Aram Rapaport, who also adapts the Max Barry novel with the author. The comedy prodiced by Cameron Lamb, Susan A. Stover and Barrie M. Osborne, also co-stars Josh Pais, Toby Hemingway, Greg Paul and Rachel Dratch. Syrup is an edgy comedy that exposes the cut-throat world of advertising through the eyes of a young prodigy chasing fame, fortune, and the woman of his dreams. Fresh out of school with a degree in marketing, Scat will do anything to prove that he has what it takes to swim with the rich and wildly successful. Scat comes up with a brilliant new product that gives new meaning to the old saying “sex sells.” He is sure it will send him right to the top…if only he can convince his boss, the beautiful and mysterious “6,” that it's an idea worth millions.

Is it possible that all of your likes, your dislikes, the very tastes that you feel define you as a human being, aren’t really choices that you’ve made for yourself at all, but ideas that have been sold to you by slick, suit-wearing predators who pride themselves on being able to tap into your ego and insecurities in order to brainwash you into believing whatever what they want you to believe? Are you such a mindless follower that you’ve bought your entire identity off of a billboard? These are the heady questions at the center of Max Barry’s debut novel “Syrup,” which is a satirical tale set in the world of product marketing. And they’re the heady questions at the center of director Aram Rappaport’s new film adaptation of the story, which stars names like Shiloh Fernandez, Brittany Snow, and Amber Heard. "We take image very seriously." Magnolia Pictures has debuted a trailer for the indie film Syrup, based on Max Barry's "cult" business/marketing novel of the same name. It tells the story of a young marketing exec who comes up with a million-dollar idea, but "has to learn to trust his attractive corporate counterpart." The concept behind this isn't bad, but there's something extra cheesy about the cast and the marketing dialogue that makes everything feel a bit too fake. The cast includes Brittany Snow and Amber Heard as the sex sellers, plus Shiloh Fernandez, Kellan Lutz, Rachel Dratch and Josh Pais. Not great, but may be fun. Here's the first official trailer for Aram Rappaport's adaptation Syrup, found on YouTube: A slacker named Scat (Shiloh Fernandez) hatches a million-dollar idea. But, in order to see it through, he has to learn to trust his attractive corporate counterpart.

After an underwhelming trailer and flashy set photos, we thought the film adaptation of Max Barry’s novel “Syrup,” might show up at Sundance. It didn't, but along the way, Magnolia Pictures landed the film and, with a theatrical and OnDemand release around they corner, they’ve also dropped a brand new trailer. Directed by Aram Rappaport and featuring "Evil Dead" star Shiloh Fernandez, Amber Heard and Kellan Lutz, the film looks to posit itself as a sleek, winking satire on the advertising and business worlds. As the trailer shows, Fernandez plays Scat (yes, that’s his name), who brainstorms a soda beverage called Fukk Cola and bands together, both romantically and professionally, with 6 (Heard), the production manager at Coke. Yes, that’s her name as well, and speaking of promotional attempts aimed to please, the trailer doesn’t exactly sell the film’s charms. Amidst the rampant dolly whip-pans...

"The success of this product depends on people being shallow, superficial, self-obsessed, greedy, and desperate for attention. This is American Dream in a fucking can." This is the pitch that Shiloh Fernandez's Scat delivers to sell his brainchild.a new kind of soda.to potential investors. And just like that, the teaser for Syrup is off and running with a shrewdly satirical tone that looks to skewer not only contemporary corporate America, but also sexual politics and the very concept of celebrity. Featuring one of Hollywood’s hottest, but underutilized actresses, Amber Heard alongside Shiloh Fernandez, Syrup is based on the 1999 Max Barry’s comic novel of the same name.
A satirical comedy of marketing and consumerism is co-written and directed by Aram Rappaport (Innocent).
The story follows Scat (Fernandez) who discovers the idea for a new soda beverage named Fukk. He pitches it to ‘6’ (Heard), the production manager at Coke, who agrees that it has massive potential to make them rich. But Scat’s roommate Sneaky Pete (Kellan Lutz) sees this opportunity to climb the corporate ladder, and steals the idea.
While Brad Pitt, Winona Ryder, Tom Cruise and Gwyneth Paltrow all make appearances in the book, something tells us this indie didn’t manage to get them.
The film also stars Brittany Snow.
No release date or distributor yet.

I have been waiting patiently for Max Barry's novels to make their way to the big screen, but Syrup was not the one I thought would get made first. Barry is an excellent Australian author who has penned four novels: Syrup, Company, Machine Man, and Jennifer Government. Amber Heard and movies based on cult novels don't seem to fit so well together. "The Informers," based on Bret Easton Ellis' book, was largely ignored, while "The Rum Diary" didn't manage to bring much life to Hunter S. Thompson's work. And now comes "Syrup," which brings Max Barry's novel to the big screen, and this trailer suggests that Heard might be going 0-3. Co-starring Shiloh Fernandez and Kellan Lutz, and directed by Aram Rappaport, the story follows Scat (Fernandez) who discovers the idea for a new soda beverage named, uh, Fukk Cola. He pitches it to 6 (yes, that's her name, and she's played by Heard), the production manager at Coke, who agrees that it has massive potential to make them rich. He was the boy who cried sequel, but lo and behold, it might actually happen. According to Deadline Glentondale, Chloe Moretz, Aaron Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all in talks to join the project. This comes on the heels of director Matthew Vaughn potentially directing Max Barry’s “Lexicon.” The sequel will be directed by its writer, Jeff Wadlow (Cry_Wolf, Never Back Down). It’s doubtful that the movie will be filming by this summer, as Millar recently claimed, but it’s more than possible that it will move forward under the purview of Universal and give fans another chance to see Moretz beat the life out of a bunch of bad guys. Of course, if the insider giving Deadline the info is Mark Millar, another...

Deadline Broken Hill reports that Barry’s agents sent a copy of the book to the director, and he gave it pretty much the most glowing review possible by coughing up enough of his own money to option its movie rights. Barry’s books are generally thrillers that satirize marketing and big business, and according to Deadline’s description of “Lexicon,” it seems to be sticking to those themes. Last year's X-Men: First Class was one of the most pleasant superhero surprises of recent years, and despite an insanely quick production schedule, most of the credit to its coherence and success goes to co-writer and director Matthew Vaughn. Now, Deadline reports that Vaughn is looking beyond the world of comic books and toward novel adaptations, taking on writing and directing duties for Lexicon, based on Max Barry's upcoming book. The modern story follows a female member of an ancient secret society that uses words to convince others to do their bidding, but she breaks the group's number one rule by falling in love. Sounds like a cool project, possibly something in the same vein as Christian Bale's Equilibrium. Though he's only directed four films, Vaughn has established himself as one of the most vibrant filmmakers in the industry right now. He's got an X-Men: First Class sequel...

Producer turned writer-director Matthew Vaughn has built his reputation adapting a string of novels and graphic novels into films like Layer Cake, Stardust and Kick-Ass. And while he's currently in the works on a sequel to the comic-inspired X-Men: First Class, the English auteur has set his sights on his next adaptation, securing the rights to the Max Barry novel Lexicon. Deadline reports Vaughn used his own bankroll to option the thriller novel that won't hit bookshelves until 2013. The novel is set in a modern context where "a secret, ancient, global organization" possesses the remarkable and dangerous gift of using words to such manipulating extremes that they can be lethal. I guess Max Barry’s “Lexicon” isn’t actually a superhero story, but it mind as well be one. The premise certainly sounds superhero/comic book-ish: In Lexicon, the setting is contemporary but in a world where words are potentially lethal weapons–tools for persuading others to do what you want–which are wielded by members of a secret, ancient, global organization of people with an aptitude for persuasion in general. Their most gifted and troubled member, a young woman, breaks the society’s primary rule and falls in love. Ah, falling in love. Such a nuisance, that. Vaughn, who is currently prepping the sequel to “X-Men: First Class” for Fox, apparently dug the novel so much that he’s optioned it using his own money. Which, in Hollywood, is quite notable. Usually actors/directors get producers or the studios they’re under contract with to shell out the money for them.

Director Matthew Vaughn has been trafficking almost exclusively in comic book adaptations over the past few years, establishing franchises with 2010's "Kick-Ass" and last year's "X-Men: First Class." While Fox has Vaughn returning to direct the 'First Class' sequel, he'll still be involved in producing "Kick-Ass 2," and has optioned the rights to a couple of 'Kick-Ass' co-creator Mark Millar's other comic book properties, namely "The Secret Service" and "Superior." But it looks like Vaughn has aspirations outside of the comic book milieu, purchasing the rights to the upcoming novel "Lexicon" from author Max Barry with his own money.

While Matthew Vaughn is, I would hope, deep in pre-production on X-Men: First Class 2, there’s still some time in his schedule to option whatever he pleases. In this regard, Deadline reports that the helmer has personally purchased rights to Lexicon, a thriller novel from Max Barry that’s being published sometime next year — possibly when Vaughn can get down to filming the adaptation himself.
The book, though placed in our own time, is set in an alternate world where words can be utilized as tools of persuasion and, thus, are “wielded by members of a secret, ancient, global organization of people with an aptitude for persuasion in general.” But, as is common with these sorts of hierarchical groups, a member — the “most gifted and troubled” of them, no less — finds herself with romantic interests and tries to break from the society. (Spoilers: everyone else is freed by the end.

Max Barry posted excerpts from his fourth novel in progress on his website to enlist his readers’ help on it. The finished product, Machine Man, bears little resemblance to a crowdsourced work of fiction, but rates as a competent, creepy parable about the drive for perfection. Charles Neumann, a low-ranking scientist at the conglomerate Better Future, had trouble relating to his fellow man even before he lost his leg in a gruesome lab accident. Facing months of grueling physical therapy, his first concern isn’t how to distract himself from his injury, but how to design a better prosthesis than ...

Max Barry's Machine Man has come a long way since its beginnings as an online serial. The novel, based on the series, is set to be released on August 9, while respected filmmaker Darren Aronofsky is attached as screenwriter and director for an anticipated big screen version. Barry says Machine Man has always had a close relationship to technological interaction: it was motivated by impatient online readers as well as the novelist.s own desire to deliver fiction over the internet. .The serial was basically an idea to tell a story in a way that would fit with the web experience," he says. "You.d get a page in your inbox each day and it would take you about a minute to read and you could go back to whatever you were doing. And that.s where I...

Everything's set to go for "Syrup," which will be author Max Barry's first big screen production of his debut novel. The very favorably-reviewed book will be directed by Aram Rappaport (upcoming "Summer Song" starring "Spy Kids" Alex Vega) and be lead by Shiloh Fernandez from the abhorrent "Red Riding Hood" (and the relatively interesting "Skateland") and Amber Heard from the anticipated, but seemingly long-delayed Hunter S. Thompson flick "The Rum Diary." Although the talent is rather unknown, the source material seems to be an insane delight: Marketing grad Scat (Fernandez) discovers the idea for a new soda beverage, effectively named…...

There's a reason this article is illustrated with a ten-year old image of Nicole Kidman in The Others: she's not quite a stranger to making low-budget chillers, and now she seems to be tapped for a new one. Saw and Insidious director James Wan is putting together a movie called Spectre, and a throwaway mention in a Variety [1] report on Cannes sales mentions that Nicole Kidman is in talks to star. We don't know what the film is, but knowing James Wan's general M.O. I'll let you guess the basics. Nicole Kidman already has one thriller in the can for this year (Joel Schumacher's Trespass, with Nic Cage) and may be Park Chan-Wook's Stoker and/or Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful. But I'll admit: fond memories of The Others make me hope this comes together. After the break. Mark Strong gets ready to punch,...

It's being adapted from Maxx Barry's book of the same title which Barnes and Noble provides the synopsis: "When Scat comes up with the idea for the hottest new soda ever, he's sure he'll retire the next rich, savvy marketing success story. But in the treacherous waters of corporate America there are no sure things--and suddenly Scat has to save not only his idea but his yet-to-be-realized career. With the help of the scarily beautiful and brainy 6, he sets out on a mission to reclaim the fame and fortune that, time and again, eludes him."

Here is a description of the book:

As the film award circus continues, Darren Aronofsky is beginning to develop The Wolverine, a Japan-set story based on the Marvel Comics X-Men character. But what we didn't know is, this isn't the only comic book movie Aronofsky is currently developing. In a recent interview, Darren revealed that he is "doing a comic book of a script that’s really hard to make and we’re going to do a comic version first and see what happens." It seems like Darren is trying to use the world of graphic novels as a backdoor into getting the movie made. And this wouldn't be the first time that Aronofsky has turned to the world of comics. His initial version of The Fountain was released in graphic novel form by Vertigo Comics in 2005 after Brad Pitt left the project high and dry. Which project could this possibly be for? We try to figure it out,...
