Value of Italy's ad market up 2.7%
ROME -- Italy's Communications Authority on Wednesday released a report indicating the total value of the country's media advertising market is €22.1 billion ($28.3 billion), a 2.7% increase from the previous year. The figures will likely have an impact on Mediaset, the television empire owned by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, according to industry observers. Italy's media and advertising law -- usually referred to as the Gasparri Law, named for former minister of communications Maurizio Gasparri -- prohibits a single company from collecting more than 20% of the total media advertising pie during the following year. That means that based on 2005 figures, no company can earn more than €4.4 billion ($5.7 billion) in advertising revenue. When Mediaset reports its results later this month, analysts predict it will reveal between €4.1 billion ($5.3 billion) and €4.6 billion ($5.9 billion) in advertising revenue.
