Strava has finally ended the year-long search for its new CEO. The fitness tracking app has hired Michael Martin, whose experience includes ecommerce-adjacent stints at YouTube and Nike.
Martin comes to Strava after spending less than two years at YouTube, where he served as the Gm and VP of Shopping. He will bring a new identity to a company that has been closely linked to its Co-Founders since its 2009 launch. Michael Horvath served as CEO until 2013 and again from 2019 on. He announced in early 2023 that he would depart that role again so that Strava could hire “a CEO with the experience and skills to help us make the most of this next chapter.”
Horvath’s fellow Co-Founder, Mark Gainey, was Strava CEO from 2013 to 2017. The only time before now that someone other than a Co-Founder has led the company came between 2017 and 2019, when Instagram exec James Quarles assumed the top job.

Mark Neveldine, best known for his wild collaborations with Brian Taylor (Crank/Gamer), is one of the most lovably renegade filmmakers in the game today. His daredevil dedication to achieving the perfect shot has been detailed by curious paparazzi members on numerous occasions, because when you see a director holding onto a motorcycle while wearing rollerblades, you tend to get a little curious. But his latest film, The Vatican Tapes, is a solo departure from those typically outrageous action stylings. There’s no need for high-speed filming techniques in this barely-found-footage exorcism thriller, as this religious shocker calls for a much more restrained lens. Possession plotlines require a low-and-slow handling – something Neveldine isn’t exactly used to doing.

Better the Devil You Show: Neveldine’s Solo Outing Can’t Quite Reach its Inner Demon
It’s hard to figure out who these religious themed horror films are made for. Director Mark Neveldine, stepping out on his own for the first time following four co-directed efforts with Brian Taylor (the team behind the Crank films and that Nicolas Cage sequel Ghost Rider), can’t seem to provide an answer with this derivative hunk of spiritually solicited scares, yanking plot points from ye classic films of yonder, like The Omen and The Exorcist, but whittled down to a palatable PG-13 rating for the kiddies. Those who are actually religious find these forays into devilish mayhem blasphemous or exploitational, while an increasing number of staunch non-believers need a bit more than the run-of-the-mill possession flick to be goaded into the thrill of a fantasy they don’t believe in anyway.

The Bonds of Bonding: Martin’s Debut a Choppy Crime Caper
Sustained by a likeable cast of notable character actors, screenwriter Michael C. Martin’s directorial debut 10 Cent Pistol sports similarities with his previous credit Brooklyn’s Finest (2009), which was directed by Antoine Fuqua. Multiple perspectives converge and crisscross over pulpy crime thriller tropes as cheaply manufactured as its titular toy would indicate, though its overly convoluted patch of twists, turns, and other maneuvers eventually belies a threadbare narrative by the time we get to the unveiling of the film’s ultra-mastermind. Taking place over familiar and commonly utilized Los Angeles terrain, this sun dappled rhinestone ultimately feels like another mean spirited, empty headed bauble, one whose ultimate moments of entertainment are dictated by the quality of the character in focus at any given moment.

“Congratulations, you ain’t dead”

Everything that needs to be said has, and Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) our fascinating lead who has grown from a revenge-hungry former soldier into a dangerously driven man with a new wife and child. Season four has had some great episodes, like the premiere, “The Elusive Eden”, “Elam Ferguson”, and its midseason finale, “Return to Hell”. But for the most part, the season has...

Behind stories of hard-boiled cops on the beat of gritty city streets can often be found a disheartening reality, in that the cops who patrol the streets might not be the most grounded people. Maybe they have as many skeletons in their closets as the crooks and criminals they pursue. Though not an original theme, Antoine Fuqua captures it incredibly well in Brooklyn's Finest
The story is focused on three different policemen, all of different divisions, but all are of the same breed. Richard Gere plays Eddie, a veteran cop still on the beat after 22-years, one week away from his pension. He has seen everything, and his complete apathy to do so much as stop a man from hitting his wife while out of his precinct illustrates his “bare minimum” approach of just getting the job done so he can retire and get his life together. You'll likely not...

Luke reviews Brooklyn’s Finest, a cop movie whose quality of direction makes up for its clichéd plot…
Heard the one about the dirty cop stealing money from the criminals he's meant to be locking up? You have? Okay, well how about the one with the cop who's got eight days to retirement? It could be seven, just to mix it up a little. That one too, huh? All right, last try: the undercover cop who's in so deep that he doesn't know where his loyalties lie anymore? Anyone?
Just to be clear, then, Brooklyn's Finest is a film about New York police officers that won't be all that unfamiliar to anyone who's seen a film about New York police officers before. If, as the saying goes, there are only seven original stories you can tell, Brooklyn's Finest does its best to cram as many of them as it can into its two hours.

This is the world we live in: any time you make a movie about morally conflicted cops battling charismatic drug dealers on violent city streets, you're going to draw comparisons to The Wire -- and almost inevitably, your movie will come up short. At times, Brooklyn's Finest is gleefully derivative, like the best of director Antoine Fuqua's work, but most of the time it just seems to be going through the melodramatic motions. It's a wonderfully stacked cast -- including three "Wire" regulars, Hassan Johnson, Michael K. Williams, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. -- but it's ultimately just nothing more than an okay cop movie. It has larger ambitions which it simply can't live up to. The first-time screenwriter, Michael C. Martin, described the compelling central kernel of the movie: "Police officers trying to do the right thing, but being told they...

I usually refrain from referencing other reviews in my own, but I happened to catch the Tomatometer reading for Brooklyn's Finest earlier today, and found myself dreading the prospect of screening the movie after I noticed it was somewhere in the 30s. Having seen the movie now, and not having had the benefit of reading the content of any of those reviews, I'm at something of a loss. As crime dramas go, Brooklyn's Finest is not exactly Heat, but it is a solid film, intense, well-acted, and as wide releases go in 2010, it's second to only Shutter Island for the year's best so far (not that the competition has been exactly fierce).
In fact, replace Denzell Washington's performance with almost anyone else's, and Brooklyn's Finest is a better film than Training Day, even if it does tread much of the same territory. It's certainly Antoine Fuqua's best work (again,...

"Brooklyn's Finest" takes us back once more to Cop Land, where drug thugs fester and desperate lawmen fight to keep their heads above the slime. Director Antoine Fuqua has walked down these mean streets before, in the 2001 "Training Day." Here, he's relocated from L.A. to New York to tell a more complex tale; and while the movie is inevitably schematic in its interweaving of three different stories, it's a blistering piece of work.
Brooklyn's grim 65th Precinct appears to be populated exclusively by good guys, bad guys and the dead guys who got in their way. Like everyone else except the departed, narc-squad veteran Sal Procida (Ethan Hawke) has heavy problems: a sick wife, five kids and twins on the way. Sal needs to move his family out...

According to the ads, the major selling point of Brooklyn's Finest is that it's from the director of Training Day. This is true! They are not lying about that. His name is Antoine Fuqua. He also directed Tears of the Sun, King Arthur, and Shooter, but never mind that. It's Training Day that Brooklyn's Finest most closely resembles, insofar as it's about rogue cops driven by personal agendas, and Ethan Hawke is involved.
What it also resembles, though, is a lot of other movies about rogue cops driven by personal agendas. Written by first-timer Michael C. Martin as an entry in a screenplay contest (here's a New York Times story about him), the film makes almost no effort to stand apart from its genre brethren, but it does benefit from solid casting and Fuqua's gritty, no-nonsense style. It even benefits a little from Ethan Hawke, which is somewhat rare these days.

Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke in Brooklyn's Finest
Photo: Overture Films Brooklyn's Finest is an immensely frustrating film. While it never does anything to set itself apart from so many other cop dramas you've seen involving dirty cops, the lack of pay for their public service and the overall effect dealing with the scum of the Earth can do to a person, it actually does a decent job building up a group of characters that represent these certain aspects of the profession. And then it throws it all away in an ending that was too long in the coming to begin with and made it even worse by just giving up on everything it had developed to that point.
After directing the Oscar-winning Training Day in 2001 it seems Antoine Fuqua can't find his footing and while Brooklyn's Finest serves as a return to similar territory, it doesn't come close to living up to its predecessor.

"Brooklyn's Finest" has a buffet of new images on offer. The crime thriller is helmed by Antoine Fuqua from the screenplay by Michael C. Martin. Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes, Ellen Barkin, Jesse Williams, Lili Taylor, Will Patton, Brian D. O'Byrne and Vincent D'Onofrio star. It's good to Wesley Snipes back on the big screen again. Hopefully, this marks a solid return for the actor. In the course of one chaotic week, the lives of three conflicted New York City police officers are dramatically transformed by their involvement in a massive drug operation in Brooklyn’s Finest, a searing new crime drama from acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). Burned out veteran Eddie Dugan (Golden Globe®-winner Richard Gere) is just one week away from his pension and a fishing cabin in Connecticut. Narcotics officer Sal Procida (Oscar® nominee Ethan Hawke) has discovered there’s no line...

For screenwriter Michael C. Martin's first produced script Brooklyn's Finest, he got quite the casting jackpot. The intertwining tale of Brooklyn cops lured in Ethan Hawke, Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Wesley Snipes (!!), not to mention more familiar faces like Will Patton, Ellen Barkin, Lili Taylor, Vincent D'Onofrio and that guy who's on "FlashForward." The movie comes from Antoine Fuqua, who seems to be evading Director Jail since Training Day (despite King Arthur and Shooter)....

- Call it reverse psychology or just smart business practices, but after last year’s examples of big, un-bought films grabbing the headlines, and then fizzling out in full view of journos and buyers alike with no way to get rid of the negative stench in the air, it appears that the new trend is to go into Sundance with no buzz at all. THR reports that sellers might come into the festival and keep the expectations low. Here are some titles that we might see…. An EducationWritten by Nick Hornby and helmed by Lone Scherfig, this is an adapted the screenplay from a memoir by Lynn Barber. The story of a 17-year-old girl living in the quiet London suburbs.
