Five years ago, Arrow Video gave a two-disc limited edition Blu-ray release to writer/director Wes Craven’s 1972 feature debut The Last House on the Left. Rlje Films has acquired the North American rights to the thriller “The Owners,” starring Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”), Jake Curran, Ian Kenny, Andrew Ellis, Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham.

The film is expected to be released in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD in the fall of 2020. Julius Berg made his feature directorial debut with “The Owners” from a script he co-wrote with Matthieu Gompel with the participation of Geoff Cox.

The film from Millennium Media and Eclectic Pictures has an interesting premise, courtesy a spec script from screenwriter Adam Alleca. It centers on a man who has to hunt down clones of himself who have gone AWOL from a war they were made to fight in, and instead have set their sights on the corporate state that created them.

Is Cell -- which hits limited theaters this weekend after debuting on VOD formats June 10 and suffering numerous release-date delays -- the worst Stephen King adaptation of all time? It’s impossible to definitively answer to that question! Still, based on the film’s bleak 0% Rotten Tomatoes score, it’s very possibly one of the worst, and given the competition, that's something. A couple of caveats: 1. Cell was presumably not screened for many (if any) critics, given the low number of reviews listed on Rotten Tomatoes (20 as of this writing). Films tend to benefit from a greater number of reviews given that they offer a broader spectrum of opinions, some of which are bound to be less discerning. 2. Remember that long-shelved adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell? It’s totally out now, available to rent on VOD. No marketing, no enthusiasm – all signs pointed towards an outdated, forgettable watch. Even the promotional poster on my television’s On-Demand screen was haplessly cobbled together, featuring Samuel L. Jackson’s shiny bald dome and clean-shaven face…even though he’s never seen in the film without a hat, or without facial hair. For all accounts and purposes, it seems like no one wants you to watch Cell, and after doing so myself, I’ll join that chorus of voices. There have been some phenomenal cinematic adaptations of Stephen King material – this is not one of them.

The next Stephen King-based project to make it to the big screen will be Cell, which is heading our way from Paranormal Activity 2 director Tod Williams.

Cell stars John Cusack, Samuel L Jackson and Isabel Fuhrman, and it tells the story of a strange signal that goes out across mobile phone networks, that consequently turns people into zombie-like savages.

Based on Stephen King’s novel, the author co-wrote the screenplay with Adam Alleca, and Cell heads to UK cinemas on August 26th.

This one’s been a long time coming. Stephen King is a genre unto himself at this point. A “Stephen King movie” can be anything from Stand By Me to Maximum Overdrive, and the only thing they all have in common is him as the original source of the material. It seems like a given at this point that if King publishes something, it will eventually be turned into a film. Some books just take longer than others to make the jump. For example, Hulu just wrapped up 11.22.63, the eight-part adaptation of King’s time-travel story about trying to stop the murder of JFK from taking place. Co-produced by Bad Robot and starring James Franco, that was not the first attempt at cracking that adaptation. Jonathan Demme was the first director to try to take a crack at that one, and he was going to do it as a feature film.

I’ve been wondering what has been going on with the big screen adaption of Stephen King’s Cell. The film completed shooting last year with Samuel L. Jackson, John Cusack, and Isabelle Fuhrman and has since been looking for distribution.

Well, it finally found it. Saban Films has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the film, which means it will be released eventually. Stephen King is a pretty busy guy lately. He recently produced the currently-airing adaptation of his loopy time-travel story 11.22.63 over on Hulu, while simultaneously helping to guide the long-awaited big screen adaptation of The Dark Tower into theaters (tentatively coming in January of 2017). There’s even that Revival movie coming down the line. On top of all that, it’s easy to forget that Cell — one of his more modern stories — is on the release slate for later this year.

A priest presiding over a funeral is the first one to get shot in the trailer for Standoff. Laurence Fishburne continues firing away, eliminating witnesses until one is left, a bespectacled little girl in a red dress (Ella Ballentine) taking photographs. She flees Fishburne and finds refuge in a nearby home with Thomas Jane, who wields a big shotgun. The only problem is, he's only got one bullet left. And Laurence Fishburne is very, very angry. The movie was filmed on location in Ontario, Canada. Adam Alleca wrote and directed; he received a co-writing credit on the 2009 remake The Last House on the Left, which I thought was a pretty good, intense effort. I'm not sure what Voltage Pictures has planned for release yet. First off, my apologies if you've already seen these first images of John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson and Isabelle Fuhrman from Stephen King's Cell. They actually made an appearance a couple months back, but we missed it somehow.

But here's the deal: I Loved this book. Stephen King's "The Cell" is not only a Stephen King book on par with his best, it is a very good zombie book and definitely worthy of a film adaptation. And since we've got a lot of readers interested in all things Pa, I figured we needed to share it widely.

So, better late than never I say.

Cell is being directed by Paranormal Activity 2 helmer Tod Williams and co-written by King and Adam Alleca.

Yeah, for a second there I forgot this zombie movie Cell was happening too. That is, until I was reminded by this photo from it that we received. It took years for this movie to get into production, and today, Clarius Entertainment announced that they will be handling U.S. distribution for the film and releasing it later this year. Here’s a brief rundown of the story:

Clarius Entertainment has acquired Us rights to Benaroya Pictures and The Genre Company’s thriller Cell starring John Cusack (upcoming Love & Mercy, Lee Daniels’ The Butler) and Oscar-nominated Samuel L. Jackson (upcoming Kingsman: The Secret Service, Django Unchained).

The film is based on the best-selling apocalyptic novel by Stephen King.

Set to be a wide theatrical release later this year, Cell also stars Isabelle Fuhrman (The Hunger Games) and Golden Globe winner Stacy Keach (Nebraska, The Bourne Legacy).

The film is directed by Tod “Kip” Williams (Paranormal Activity 2). The announcement was made today by the film’s producers Michael Benaroya and Richard Saperstein.

Get ready stateside filmgoers, because the “phoners” (aka “crazies”) are coming to the Us. Stephen King fans know that the master of macabre doesn’t like using cell phones. His 2006 novel, Cell, is a cautionary tale about what can go wrong by pressing portable phones to our ears and keeping them close at hand in our pockets, and its unflinching subject matter contains flocks of murderous lunatics that would be right at home in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, George A. Romero’s The Crazies, or Simon Clark’s Blood Crazy.

We knew this unique King novel was getting the adaptation treatment, with King co-writing the screenplay and John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles, but we’re now one big step closer to seeing it on the silver screen, as Clarius Entertainment has acquired the Us rights to the movie.

John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson star in the Stephen King adaptation about survivors on the run from blood-thirsty hordes who have been transformed by a mind-altering disruption across the global phone mobile network.

Well, this could mean trouble for Cell as it was announced this morning Clarius Entertainment has acquired domestic distribution rights to the film based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. So far Clarius has had an awful track record at the box office with the releases of And So It Goes, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return and most recently the Nicole Kidman starrer Before I Go To Sleep, the three of which combine for a grand total of only $26.8 million at the domestic box office. The budget of the Oz feature alone was $70 million while the other two haven't even been reported. The Free State Of Jones

Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey is said to be starring in "The Hunger Games" director Gary Ross' $65 million-budget Civil War drama "The Free State Of Jones" at Im Global and Stx Entertainment. Filming begins in the first quarter of 2015 with Scott Stuber on board to produce.

Ross wrote the screenplay which follows Newton Knight, a Southern unionist who fled the battlefield and rallied Confederate Army deserters to his so-called Knight Company against the Confederacy. Knight went on to marry the former slave of his grandfather and is still a divisive figure to this day . [Source: Screen]

Downsizing

Matt Damon has signed on to star in "The Descendants" and "Sideways" director Alexander Payne's "Downsizing" for 20th Century Fox. No word on when filming will begin.

Damon plays a man who comes to the realization that his life would be much better if he shrunk himself. Payne and Jim Taylor co-wrote the screenplay.

The Longest Ride

Scott Eastwood ("Invictus," "Fury") has nabbed the lead role in George Tillman Jr.'s upcoming adaptation of the 2013 Nicholas Sparks novel "The Longest Ride" at Fox 2000.

The story follows two couples - an elderly man who recounts his younger years with the love of his life, and a love affair between a college senior and a young cowboy (Eastwood) at a bull-riding event. The two couples, who have little in common, find their lives converging. [Source: THR]

Morena Baccarin ("Homeland," "Firefly") is joining the cast of Paul Feig's new comedy "Spy" at 20th Century Fox. Melissa McCarthy plays a CIA analyst who goes into the field for the first time.

As we reported recently, the feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell recently started filming and we the first look at the main cast of characters. For those who are unfamiliar with the novel, Stephen King’s Cell was originally published in 2006 and involves a cell signal that turns most of the population into zombies:
