HBO’s Lovecraft Country may take place in 1950s Jim Crow America, but the story didn’t just stay in one setting, which gave costume designer Dayna Pink a lot to work with. So much so that Pink isn’t nominated in a period costume category, instead she is nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes category.
The series follows Atticus (Jonathan Majors) as searches for his missing father with his friend Leti (Jurnee Smollett) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance). The episode for which Pink is nominated, “I Am.”, follows Atticus’s Aunt Hippolyta (Aunjanue Ellis) as she travels through infinite realities, which really highlights the sci-fi/fantasy costume designs.
Deadline: What were your initial thoughts on the costume design for the series?

Gabriele Binder was “so happy to be part of this group” that we assembled for our “Meet the Btl Experts” panel of Emmy-contending costume designers, who joined us to discuss their work, inspirations, challenges, and more. Binder is nominated for Best Period Costumes for “The Queen’s Gambit,” while Dayna Pink (“Lovecraft Country”) and Christopher Hargadon (“The Umbrella Academy”) vie for Best Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and Zaldy (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) hopes to win a juried award for Best Costumes for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program. The four artists represent “absolutely different imaginations, different universes.” Watch our group discussion above, and watch each person’s individual chat by clicking on each name.
“You’re kind of born with it, and you carry it through your life, and it is kind of an honor that other people recognize it, especially nowadays,” Hargadon adds about working in costume design. And it’s not just a craft.

This story about “Lovecraft Country” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Even in a television landscape that includes close to 500 scripted series, HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” might cross more genres and eras than any other. A hearty blend of science fiction, drama, horror, romance, revisionist history and even a modicum of actual biography, this phalanx of styles would prove daunting to even the most seasoned of designers. But under the mindful guidance of showrunner Misha Green, production designer Kalina Ivanov and costume designer Dayna Pink found a way to transform it into one cohesive visual universe.
“I think that was part of the draw,” Pink said. “What if you got to add your own style to something that already exists? It gave us room to be incredibly creative.” The creativity included more than 160 sets on five soundstages and a backlot, and 4,500 costumes which,...

Jurnee Smollett has earned some of the best notices of her career for Lovecraft Country, HBO’s hit supernatural limited series. She stars as Letitia ‘Leti’ Lewis, a young African-American woman drawn into an occult odyssey through the segregated and virulently racist America of the 1950s. Malevolent white people, some involved in strange, mystical activities, and bloodthirsty beasts pursue Leti and her traveling companions, Atticus “Tic” Freeman (Jonathan Majors) and Montrose Freeman (Michael K. Williams), across 10 episodes of supercharged action. HBO may order a second season, which would once again put Leti through the wringer.
Deadline: What was your reaction when you first read the script?
Jurnee Smollett: Number one, after reading it, I lost sleep. I felt such an overwhelming desire to play Leti. There was such a fear that there would be anyone but me playing that. And I don’t really have that sort of reaction usually to roles.

“I think the first thing that [showrunner Misha Green] said to us was that she wanted gothic R&b, and I don’t think there had been a genre exactly like gothic R&b,” remembers “Lovecraft Country” composer Laura Karpman about the unique sound she and her co-composer Raphael Saadiq were tasked to create for the unique HBO drama. “Lovecraft Country” is set in 1950s Chicago, where a Black family must contend against Jim Crow-era racism while also trying to unravel a supernatural mystery. But the 10-episode first season spans a lot more than that. “Every single episode has its own kind of unique cinematic feel,” Karpman explains. That includes a haunted house episode, a “Raiders of the Lost Ark”-style adventure episode, and a sci-fi time travel episode. “They all have their own profiles. “The story has many elements of filmmaking and storytelling that matches with my timeline as a filmmaker about race, about gender, about sexuality, about, you know, being on the margins,” says Cheryl Dunye about the “Lovecraft Country” episode “Strange Case,” which she directed. This season she also helmed an episode of the FX documentary series “Pride,” about the fight for LGBT rights throughout the 20th century. Watch our exclusive video interview with Dunye above.
Marginalization is a major theme in “Lovecraft Country,” which explores anti-Black racism in 1950s America through the lens of supernatural horror. And Dunye’s episode was an especially unique exploration of that subject, following Ruby (Wunmi Musaku) after magic gives her the opportunity to experience the world as a white woman. Those fantasy elements “allowed me to elevate the storytelling” and “allowed me to put another layer on the messages that I wanted to already speak.

“The idea as a costume designer of being able to go to all these different places and periods and times was so rich,” says Dayna Pink about her work on HBO’s “Lovecraft Country.” “It’s not like repeating yourself over and over again. You’re just reinventing all these different things, so that was a really great challenge for us and it just kept us on our toes the whole time.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Pink above.
“Lovecraft Country” tells the story of a young African-American man in the 1950s (Jonathan Majors) whose father goes missing. But that’s just the starting point for a mystery full of horrors both supernatural and mundane as he unravels his family history while contending with the everyday monsters of American racism during the Jim Crow era. All the while it weaves elements of sci-fi, fantasy, and adventure into its complex narrative.

Thanks to one simple shirt, Lovecraft Country's dreamy wardrobe was born. If you have been watched Misha Green's supernatural horror series on HBO, you know the show is no casual watch. The anthology series, which hones in on the supernatural experiences of a Black family in 1950s Jim Crow America, can be exciting, moving, puzzling and downright horrifying with each passing twist and turn. But, there is something about the show that won't make you want to cover your eyes—and that's the clothes. With Dayna Pink at the helm of the costume design, the show—which just nabbed a Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series-Drama—visually transports us back...

A swimsuit is to Baywatch, as a national flag is to a country. The red-hot bathing suit has become an iconic identifier of the popular '90s TV series that one only need to see a mere flash of it to remember Pamela Anderson running on the beach or David Hasselhoff doing things only The Hoff could do. So, when it came to the 2017 reboot of the classic TV show, how did costume designer Dayna Pink modernize such a recognizable piece without losing its original essence? This conundrum is exactly why the pro, who also worked on Crazy, Stupid, Love. and Hot Tub Time Machine, took the job. "That bathing suit is so iconic. What costume designer wouldn't do it?" said the pro, who had to...

Sony Pictures announced today that it has scheduled the Will Smith drama Concussion for a Christmas Day release. The film is opening at a prime time, not only because of the holiday movie season but also just as the NFL will be preparing for the playoffs. Concussion follows Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who made the first discovery of football-related brain trauma in a pro player and fought to bring awareness to the public. In his search for the truth, Omalu, a total outsider to pro football, takes on the sports industry’s status quo. His studies on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (Cte), prompted the NFL to take brain-related injuries seriously. Cte was cited in the suicides of former NFL stars Junior Seau and Dave Duerson. Deadline announced Smith’s attachment to the film back in June.

Will Smith stars as Nicky, a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes romantically involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie). As he’s teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame—now an accomplished femme fatale—shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky’s latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop…and the consummate con man off his game.

We cannot cover every costume related story here at Clothes on Film, or even most until we get an army of writers and a faster internet connection. So just in case we have missed anything important here is a head count of costume design articles from around the web this week. Mad Men is tapering off slightly, but there is more and more Great Gatsby out there every day.
The Great Gatsby (1974)
Costume designer May Routh (The Man Who Fell to Earth, being There) remembers when the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby was released, “For one scene the director decided the extras would all jump in a fountain but they were all wearing original pieces from the Twenties. The clothes were ruined and the loss led, inevitably, to an expensive lawsuit.”
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical looks quite a lot like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the movie.

This insightful comedy about the hopelessness of love is every inch a ‘fashion film’, both in terms of narrative and thanks to costume designer Dayna Pink’s enviable parade of menswear trends and elegant suiting.
Crazy, Stupid, Love (directed by Glenn Ficara and John Requa) stars Steve Carell as Cal Weaver, a middle aged man who has forgotten how to be a man and Ryan Gosling as Jacob Palmer, a bar culture player who helps Cal regain his self respect. Clothes in the film are prioritised over the man. They denote what we wear reflects how we evolve. Or in the case of Cal during the very first scene, how we devolve and are generally the last to notice. As the opening cuts from one couple playing footsie to another,...

Chicago – The most spoiler-named film since “Snakes on a Plane” delivers exactly what it promises with its goofy title. When you go into something like “Avatar” or “The White Ribbon,” you may not know what to expect, but there’s no surprise when a film calls itself “Hot Tub Time Machine.” It’s not a perfect comedy but it’s a heck of a lot closer than most of its recent genre peers and should satisfy those wanting to take an HD dip.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
A parody and ode to ’80s pop culture, “Hot Tub Time Machine” is reminiscent of comedies of a quarter-century ago like “Weird Science” or “Better Off Dead” with stars of the period like John Cusack, Chevy Case, and Crispin Glover, a soundtrack that uses Motley Crue liberally, and a goofy tone that was more common in the era of the brat pack. In other words,...

Something a bit different from our standard we liked it/didn’t like it review; here’s some style lessons learnt from Hot Tub Time Machine. Plus whether we liked it or not.
Aviators are cool whenever:
When loser gang Adam (John Cusack), Jacob (Clarke Duke), Nick (Craig Robinson) and Lou (Rob Corddry) transport back to Kodiak Valley Ski Resort circa 1986, aviator sunglasses are among the first sartorial giveaways on display. Lots of variations too, the standard wire frame with tints as popularised by Ray Ban, plus a bright red ‘shutter’ pair seen most recently on Kanye West.
The closest Hot Tub Time Machine has to an out and out villain, Lou’s nemesis Blaine (Sebastian Stan) poses on piste as though he is the first person ever to think of wearing aviators outside of a fighter plane. Yet with this constrained setting, just the ski resort really, costumes are...

In Hot Tub Time Machine, in theaters Friday, three men (John Cusack, Rob Corddry, and Craig Robinson) and a nephew (Clark Duke) are transported back to 1986. That means costume designer Dayna Pink got to explore what to her was the best time in fashion: "Crazy cuckoo colors.... shoulder pads, bright, bright leggings, and bikinis and boobs!" In the exclusive featurette below, Pink and the cast examine the authenticity on set. As in the movie, Corddry steals the show*: "I actually immediately start pining for old girlfriends," he says about being surrounded by big-haired extras. "Luckily, these are tight pants...
