We had to say goodbye to plenty of characters in 2024.

Some of them we’ll miss terribly, while others we may not quite as much. The year saw plenty of characters depart series, some in thoughtful and meaningful ways, others with satisfying conclusions to their arcs, others tragically, and many downright puzzling.

We’ve compiled a list of characters who may officially be gone but far from forgotten. Check it out!

Grace Ryder – 9-1-1: Lone Star (Kevin Estrada/Fox)

Not only did 9-1-1 Lone Star fans have to reel from the news that the series’ fifth season would be its last one, but we also learned that Sierra McClain, who played beloved Grace Ryder, wouldn’t return for it.

It felt like an impossible feat to write out a character who was genuinely the heart of the series, and frankly, the final season has struggled with doing it convincingly.

Fans of 911: Lone Star are hopeful the characters may make their way to other 911 shows but there's some bad news on that front!

911: Lone Star fans have had a tricky time as of late. Season 4 ended in May 2023, with plans for Season 5 put off when the 2023 Hollywood strikes happened. When the strikes ended, rather than a shortened season, Fox decided to simply hold the show off until fall 2024. 

Then a wrinkle hit when Sierra McClain announced she was leaving the series with her character Grace written out and changing a storyline for Jim Parrack's Judd. Then Fox confirmed speculation that Season 5 would be the last one. 

The franchise will continue with the mothership 911 on ABC and there are plans for a spinoff. That has fans eager to know if any characters can jump to said spinoff. However, speaking to TVLine, co-showrunner Rashad Raisani said that may be beyond his control.

911: Lone Star fans were already upset to learn that Season 5 would be the last for the Fox spinoff. It got worse when it was announced Sierra McClain would not be returning for it. Her marriage to firefighter Judd (Jim Parrack) was one of the highlights of the show. It also made little sense narratively as Judd had just quit the 126 and was raising paralyzed son Wyatt (Jackson Pace).

The season premiere explained Grace had been moved to join a missionary group with Judd seemingly supportive of it. Helping the team in an emergency had Judd returning to the 126 but now as a probie.

Max has launched an in-app feature to live stream HBO’s linear channels programming. Subscribers will now be able to experience a live feed on the app while also having the option to rewind, restart, skip ahead and move through different content channels at their preference.

A small group of adult subscribers within the the ad-free and ultimate ad-free account tiers will now see the “Channels” feature displayed on their homepage.

As 9-1-1: Lone Star prepares to come to an end, fans will be missing closure from one character who’s been there since the beginning.

Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani recently broke the news that Sierra McClain will not reprise her role as 9-1-1 operator Grace Ryder ahead of the Fox procedural’s series finale on Feb. 3, 2025, following her exit amid contract renegotiations in June.

“Not for lack of effort,” Raisani told TVLine about attempts to have McClain return.

Grace’s exit was explained earlier in the fifth and final season when her firefighter husband Judd (Jim Parrack) noted she was doing missionary work with real-life Christian nonprofit Mercy Ships, which sends hospital ships around the world to provide life-saving surgeries.

McClain's spunky 9-1-1 dispatcher has been a part of the hit Fox series since the very beginning. However, following an extended gap between the fourth and fifth seasons, the actress is not a part of the cast of 911: Lone Star's Season 5.

While some character have changed their status within the show (like Jim Parrack's Judd stepping back in 911: Lone Star Season 5 to take care of his ailing son), Grace is, simply put, gone, leaving nothing but an empty desk and a whole lot of questions.

Carlos and Tk were still doing well, although Carlos, now a Texas Ranger, had been consumed trying to find out who killed his father, Gabriel. When news broke ahead of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 that Sierra McClain walked away from the show, there were questions about how Grace would be written out.

As one of the Fox drama’s most popular characters, it was a tricky situation for the writers to navigate because there had to be a genuine reason for her to leave her husband, Judd (Jim Parrack), and her life in Texas behind.

The good news is that the show didn’t waste much time before giving viewers insight into what happened after the conclusion of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 4.

Judd revealed that Grace is out of town because she’s volunteering for a Christian charity abroad, which got her attention after a presentation at her and Judd’s church.

Showrunner Rashad Raisani told TVLine that killing off Grace “didn’t feel like it was the right thing to do by her. The only thing we could think of to justifiably pull Grace away from her family and job was an even greater calling. And the only thing in Grace’s world that could answer that was God.

“9-1-1: Lone Star” returned to Fox Monday night with a massive train derailment and a major cast change: As previously announced, Grace Ryder, played by original cast member Sierra McClain, is no longer part of the show.
