Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” has been announced as the spotlight gala film at the 61st New York Film Festival.
“Maestro is a bravura achievement for its director and star, a work of conviction and imagination that does justice to the brilliance and complexity of its subject,” said Dennis Lim, artistic director of New York Film Festival. “We are honored to have Bradley Cooper’s enthralling film as a gala presentation at this year’s festival, and doubly so to be showing it in a venue that is synonymous with Leonard Bernstein.”
“Maestro” is a biographical romance in which Cooper plays the famed conductor Leonard Bernstein. On Oct. 2, it will become the first film to premiere in the new David Geffen Hall, home of the New York Philharmonic, which Bernstein led for over a decade and where New York Film Festival began in 1963.

Warning: The following article contains major spoilers for the Netflix film "The Good Nurse."
Any show or film "based on a true story" is guaranteed to have a built-in creep factor. In the case of "The Good Nurse," the story rips pages from Charles Graeber's 2013 book " The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder," which details how real-life serial killer Charles "Charlie" Cullen murdered dozens (possibly hundreds) of people. The film, co-starring Eddie Redmayne as Cullen and Jessica Chastain as the eponymous good nurse Amy Loughren, is the latest in a long string of serial killer adaptations to hit Netflix, for better or worse.
While the film itself falls a little flat, there is plenty to admire about both Chastain's and Redmayne's performances. Redmayne, in particular, makes a disturbing turn as the deadly nurse, who insidiously wields his power to kill people under the guise of simply doing his job.

Bradley Cooper and Mahershala Ali (“Swan Song”) sat down for a virtual chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors, presented by Amazon Studios. For more, click here.
This season, both Bradley Cooper and Mahershala Ali are pulling off a double act. Cooper’s fans can see him in two period pieces: As the lead of “Nightmare Alley,” in which he plays a tormented mentalist desperate for validation in the 1940s traveling-carnival scene, and as a key supporting player in “Licorice Pizza,” in which he’s a deranged version of the producer Jon Peters. Ali’s double duty is more forward-looking, and more literal: In the futuristic sci-fi film “Swan Song,” the Oscar winner plays a dying man as well as the clone who may replace him.
Mahershala Ali: How was it making the transition from playing Stanton in “Nightmare Alley” to playing Jon in “Licorice Pizza”?

Movies about American teenage life tend to be jumpy and exuberant, as if they were unfolding in a hive. In the usual high-school comedy, even the most out-of-the-loop dweebs are right there in the jammed hallways, getting tweaked by the mean girls (or mean boys) and hanging out with their fellow quick-witted losers. There are always scenes set in the cafeteria, or at keg parties, or in the back seats of vehicles strewn with friends and enemies. But what these movies tend to leave out — what movies, almost by nature, leave out — is the part of teenage life that’s about drifting around and dreaming and being alone, not just trying to join the crowd but getting the hell away from it.
“Giants Being Lonely” gets that. It’s a drama in the unlikely form of a 73-minute slice-of-life tone poem focused on the interior world of teenage jocks. It...

"Because the only way to have fun is to stick your neck out and bite the other team's head off...!" Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Giants Being Lonely, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Grear Patterson. This originally premiered at the 2019 Venice Film Festival a few years back, and it also played at the Santa Barbara Film Festival earlier this year. A pair of players on a successful high school baseball team, the Giants, come of age in the American South. "Set in a semi-rural landscape of verdant forests and pent-up yearning, the debut feature from lauded mixed-media artist Grear Patterson is a deeply personal story of youth and young manhood, tracing the ups and downs of love, sex, loneliness, friendship, baseball, and death – as the pressure mounts to make it out alive." Stars: Gabe Fazio, Augie Duke, Federico Castelluccio, Peter Greene, Kenneth McGregor, Daniel O’Shea, Boomer Tibbs, Ashley Jordyn, Tara Rose Schreiber, Lindsey Axelsson, Kevin Ebner, Cash Kortum | Written and Directed by E.B. Hughes
Written and Directed by E.B. Hughes (Turnabout), Exit 0 is dark psychological thriller that follows a young couple who attempt to salvage their relationship with a trip to the seaside, away from the hustle, bustle and noise of the city. Things don’t go as planned, however (when do they?), as the man, Billy, discovers a VHS tape in the hotel room dresser drawer containing an apparent murder. Then the tape goes missing and people struggle to believe what Billy is telling them. Oh dear.
The film has an immediate tension that I thought was taken hold of and built up well as things progressed. It’s not merely a murder-mystery story, but delves into psycho-thriller with the questioning of Billy’s mindset.

As a director, Derek Cianfrance is usually given a major say in determining who will be cast in a project. But in the case of HBO’s adaptation of Wally Lamb’s “I Know This Much Is True,” Mark Ruffalo was already in place to star as Dominick Birdsey and his twin brother, Thomas, when Cianfrance signed on. In fact, Ruffalo, who had the option on the 1998 novel and was also set to serve as an executive producer, was the reason Cianfrance signed on.
“Mark was always one of my favorite actors. I had tried to get him in ‘Blue Valentine’ back in the mid-2000s and he instead chose to do ‘13 Going on 30,’” Cianfrance says. “We sat down to breakfast together and my answer was ‘yes’ before I even read the material.”

HBO’s six-part limited series “I Know This Much is True” is painful, raw and agonizing. What likely will keep you watching the series about deeply troubled identical twin adult brothers is the actor who brings them both to life — Mark Ruffalo. As paranoid schizophrenic Thomas, who chops off his hand to please God, he is a fount of anxiety, reserved and openly honest. As Dominick, Ruffalo is prone to angry, volatile outbursts as he tries to act as an advocate for his mentally ill brother.
SEERosie O’Donnell interview: ‘I Know This Much is True’
Ruffalo fans may sense something familiar about his dual TV roles onscreen. They might experience flashbacks to his more mainstream double-duty role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as scientist Bruce Banner, whose wayward experiment causes him to transform into the massive angry green creature known as the Hulk whenever he is in mortal danger or his heart rate zooms.

The combination of cutting-edge motion capture technology, a bond between actors and Stella Adler’s training allowed Mark Ruffalo to pull off the impressive double-act of playing twin brothers in the HBO limited series “I Know This Much Is True.”
In the adaptation of the 1998 novel by Wally Lamb, which debuts Sunday, Ruffalo portrays brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. Dominick is a blue collar, guy’s guy construction worker while Thomas is chubby and deeply sensitive man, who has been institutionalized due to mental illness.
With Ruffalo playing two characters, the six-episode series, written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, had to be shot out of sequence. When Ruffalo first approached Cianfrance about collaborating on “I Know This Much Is True,” the actor admitted that he wasn’t aware of many instances where one actor playing twins really worked well in an adult drama.

Mark Ruffalo takes on the part of twin brothers on HBO’s limited series adaptation of “I Know This Much Is True,” often appearing more than once in the same scene, but for Ruffalo it played out much like two separate jobs.
“We didn’t want it to be like, I run and put a wig on and then do the same scene I just did,” Ruffalo said, explaining that he and director Derek Cianfrance took a six-week break between shooting the two characters’ parts. Ruffalo used the hiatus to put on 30 pounds and get into the mindset of a character living with mental illness.
Based on the 1998 novel by Wally Lamb, “I Know This Much Is True” centers on twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, one of whom suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

The final days of suburban American high school provide the backdrop to Giants Being Lonely, a box-fresh cut of expressionistic filmmaking from debut writer-director Grear Patterson, a visual artist whose work to date has focused on a kind of post-modern Americana–a stylistic background that translates efficiently to the screen. Produced by Olmo Schnabel and shot beautifully by Patterson himself, Giants tells of a love triangle between three of the school’s students: the gifted pitcher of the baseball team, his coach’s less talented son, and a relatively affluent girl in their class.
Patterson has stated that Giants is autobiographical to a point, although his film, for better and worse, is far less of a nostalgic blow-by-blow memoir than the likes of, say, Lady Bird, but more a sensory memory of the time–taking place, as it does, in a palpably hot, humid, and hormone-filled summer. The first thing you notice about Grear Patterson’s “Giants Being Lonely” is how unbelievably sharp it looks. Hunter Zimny’s cinematography is bright, and it’s crisp, and if you weren’t sitting in a theater you could swear that someone left the motion smoothing on. “Giants Being Lonely” may have the free-floating structure of a Terrence Malick joint, but it hasn’t been filmed through the fog of memory. It’s immediate and specific and painful and impressive.
Set in an unspecified rural alcove of the American South, “Giants Being Lonely” examines the lives in the orbit of a high school baseball team. Their team, the Giants, is talented and successful, thanks mostly to a star pitcher named Bobby (Jack Irving) and, perhaps, to their emotionally abusive Coach, whose overlooked son Adam is on the team too. Not that anyone would notice.

"These people are dangerous!" "I warned you..." Lionsgate has just released an official trailer for a "cyber-thriller" set in the high stakes world of blockchain technology titled Crypto, from director John Stalberg Jr. (High School). It didn't take long for someone to make a film involving blockchain, it's the big technology buzzword right now and everyone wants in on it - so why not write a plot involving it. Crypto is about a Wall Street banker who connects a small-town art gallery to a global conspiracy, putting his own family in grave danger. Starring Beau Knapp as the banker, with Kurt Russell, Liam Hemsworth, Alexis Bledel, Vincent Kartheiser, Jill Hennessy, Malaya Rivera Drew, and Gabe Fazio. Surprise, surprise, this looks pretty awful. It's all bark and no bite, with such a contrived and unoriginal plot. Not looking any good. Check out this wonderfully shot opening tracking scene from director Derek Cianfrance's upcoming drama The Place Beyond the Pines, which stars Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. I love a good tracking shot, and this one features the main character in his trailer and then follows him through the carnival that he works at as he proceeds right into his crazy motorcycle stunt. I've also posted a little commentary video on the film as well.

I have been looking forward to seeing this film, The Place Beyond the Pines, for a while. The cast in it is amazing, and the trailer alone tugs at the emotional heartstrings. Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance’s latest film isn’t a tense drama about a marriage falling apart. But it does have Ryan Gosling in all kinds of tattoo’d wonder. The Place Beyond the Pines also seems to have a fair amount of tension thanks to its story, which follows a biker (Gosling) who turns to a life of crime to fend for his young son, only to get locked in the crosshairs of a rising star cop, as played by 2012′s breakout dramatic man Bradley Cooper. The best description of the film, from reviews at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, comes from Monika Bartyzel, who calls it “[Blue] Valentine’s spiritual offspring, a movement out of the worlds of love’s attraction and demise, and into the world of fathers, sons and consequences.” To say the least, Derek Cianfrance is still deep. As is evident in this first trailer. Watch...

Two film clips have been released for The Place Beyond the Pines, a film written and directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine). It also has a great cast that is sure to make you want to see it, those actors include Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Greta Gerwig, Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Ali Mahershalalhasbaz, Gabe Fazio, Max Martini and Emory Cohen.
In the film Gosling plays "a professional motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son, but when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Cooper) their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud." Gosling might just be one of the most badass actors working right now.
This looks and sounds like it going to make a great movie. It's described as "a rich dramatic thriller, tracing the intersecting lives of fathers and sons, cops and robbers, heroes and villains." The movie premiered at Tiff,...

Getting a film out in the world is a tough business, but for writer/director Mark Nistico, the effort behind his feature debut "Blue Collar Boys" has paid off with some recognition. Traveling the festival circuit, the movie earned Best Picture (Micro Budget) at the Toronto Independent Film Festival, as well as Best Screenplay at the Hoboken Film Festival. And while it won't be getting a nationwide release, it may be one to pay attention to if it screens near you. Starring Gabe Fazio (who co-stars opposite Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper in the upcoming "The Place Beyond The Pines"), Kevin Interdonato and Bruce Kirkpatrick, the story centers on Red, a 27-year-old construction worker must take over his father's business in order to save his family. With foreclosure threatening the family home, Red teams up with his friends to set things right the only way they know how. In the...

Blue Valentine director and star Derek Cianfrance and Ryan Gosling are back together for the multi-generational crime/grudge saga The Place Beyond the Pines. The film follows Gosling as a stunt cyclist who robs banks in order to provide for his son, and ands up entangled with cop-turned-politician Bradley Cooper. Their antagonism spills down the family tree, eventually involving their sons. The large cast was said to include Greta Gerwig, but now we've learned that she had never fully signed on, and won't be able to take part in the film due to other obligations. Stepping into the role earmarked for her will be Rose Byrne, of Damages and Bridesmaids. Vulture [1] reports the switch; we'll now see Rose Byrne as the wife of Bradley Cooper's character. As far as we know the rest of the cast is still the same: Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Ali Mahershalalhasbaz, Gabe Fazio,...

Here are some of the first photos from the set of The Place Beyond The Pines that show Ryan Gosling with bleached blonde hair and some nice new tattoos. The film was written and directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) and also stars Bradley Cooper, Greta Gerwig, Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Ali Mahershalalhasbaz, Gabe Fazio, Max Martini and Emory Cohen. Gosling plays "a professional motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son, but when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Cooper) their confrontation spirals into a generational feud."
Gosling was fantastic in Crazy, Stupid Love and I can not wait to see him in Gangster Squad. Check out the photos below and share your thoughts.

Several days ago, the news broke that True Blood actor Dane DeHaan had joined The Place Beyond the Pines as the son of characters played by Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes. Said to get involved in “a botched drug deal” with Bradley Cooper and Greta Gerwig‘s offspring, he was also mentioned as being one of the last major roles that needed to be cast. Putting two and two together would lead one to the assumption that one of the very last major roles requiring an actor is the aforementioned son of the other two leads.
Thankfully, Variety tells us that Emory Cohen, who’s previously been seen in movies like Afterschool and New York, I Love You, has landed that part. The character is described as “Aj, a drug dealing teen who’s resentful of his father, who seems to care more about his budding political career.” (Cooper‘s character is a cop-turned politician.
