Sundance added 57 short films to its impressive 2025 lineup on Monday, including new films starring Dagmara Domińcyzk, J. Smith Cameron, Kenneth Lonergan, and Martin Starr.

“Our program would never be complete without a curation of outstanding short films, and we’re excited to share the 2025 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Program today,” said Kim Yutani, Sundance Film Festival Director of Programming. “These projects are varied in style and substance, but across all categories, they represent the power of short-form storytelling beautifully.”

“Our Short Film Program celebrates fresh styles and unique stories. The short run time encourages innovation,” said Mike Plante, Senior Programmer, Short Film. “Audiences will find much of the next generation of film talent here, with raw, exciting and inspired filmmaking from around the world in each of our eight programs.”

According to the Sundance press release, “The 57 short films selected for the 2025 Sundance Film Festival were chosen from 11,153 submissions.

With the features lineup out of the way last week, the 2025 Sundance Film Festival has revealed the short films headed to Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, for the event’s 41st edition. Beginning January 23 through February 2, festival attendees can catch 57 short films from 28 countries and territories — including live action, animated, and nonfiction documentary titles. Shorts will also be available online during the festival’s second half along with select feature sections.

The 57 short films selected for the 2025 Sundance Film Festival were chosen from 11,153 submissions. Out of these submissions, 4,909 came from the U.S. and 6,244 were international. The selected films will be eligible for juried awards at the end of the festivals.

Satter is being recognised for her “longstanding commitment to nurturing artists and cultivating independent film through the Sundance Labs” over the past four decades.

The annual event will also see Vanguard Awards presented to Didi director Sean Wang, and Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, co-directors of Sugarcane. All three premiered their films in Park City earlier this year.

The annual Sundance Film Festival gala fundraiser has unveiled its 2025 honorees. Known as “Celebrating Sundance Institute,” presented by Google TV, the gala will bestow the Vanguard Awards to “Dìdi” writer/director Sean Wang, and “Sugarcane” co-directors Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie. Winsome Sinclair, the casting director who helped bring in actors for Waiting to Exhale, Amistad, Precious, The Best Man and a dozen films directed by Spike Lee, has died. She was 58.

Sinclair died Monday in hospice care on Long Island after a long battle with colon cancer, publicist Clorissa Wright-Thomas told The Hollywood Reporter. Her family was at her bedside.

The New York native launched the global casting agency Winsome Sinclair and Associates in New York in 1996, then relocated the business to Atlanta in 2014 amid that city’s production boom.

Sinclair also cast extras for the John Singleton-directed features Higher Learning (1995), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) and Abduction (2011), for the Malcolm D. Lee-helmed The Best Man (1999) and Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016) and for the Dee Rees-directed Pariah (2011) and Bessie (2015).

Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood had to make between 200 and 300 leather bomber jackets for AppleTV+’s World War II series “Masters of the Air.”

Despite having more than 80 credits to her name, Atwood had never done a WWII drama and was delighted to finally be tackling the era. She dove deep into researching the period, collecting photos of the young men on the military bases so she could create individual styles for the actors and their characters. She even got samples of the original uniforms.

Her biggest challenge, however, was recreating aviator jackets of the era. It took her six months to complete the task, which ended up becoming a global undertaking.

Leather specialist Gary Eastman provided Atwood with the material, but she needed period-specific zippers, which she had shipped in from Japan. The sheepskin for the shearling linings came from

Scotland and England.

In Apple TV+’s new World War II series Masters of the Air, Major John C. “Bucky” Egan (Callum Turner) fearlessly soars through the skies in state-of-the-art Flying Fortress planes advancing against the Nazis. At 25,000 feet up in the clouds, the World War II commander pilot stays warm, and in uniform, in his “lucky” shearling B3 bomber jacket.

“It was freezing up there,” Turner tells The Hollywood Reporter, explaining the physical and mental, risks the real members of the 100th Bomb Group endured through their harrowing missions. “It was a hostile environment not only because of the German [fighter jets] but also because of the atmosphere and the weather. They were in sheepskin jackets for a reason.”

Also known as the “Bloody 100th” for the staggering number of lives lost in combat, the squadron helped liberate Europe through new and constantly advancing technology — also as illustrated through the evolution of the airmen’s commanding leather jackets.

Over 22 years after the premiere of HBO’s landmark Band of Brothers and nearly 14 years after the launch of HBO’s The Pacific (not quite as good as Band of Brothers but still epic longform storytelling), executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg have finally brought their third World War II series to the small screen.

It is, mind you, a misnomer to say that anything associated with Masters of the Air is “small,” be it the screen or otherwise. Based on Donald L. Miller’s 2007 book of the same name and developed for Apple TV+ by John Orloff, Masters of the Air is, by any measure, huge. It boasts a mammoth ensemble of young stars in various states of ascension, requires an astonishing quantity of technical effects to achieve its high-flying narrative and, when its key moments land, is equal parts breathtaking, exhilarating and rousingly inspirational.

The schedule for the milestone 40th Sundance Film Festival continues to fall into focus. Sundance Institute announced the addition of the documentary The Greatest Night in Pop to the 2024 Sundance Film Festival film program and the lineup for the Festival’s Beyond Film programming.

In addition to the three annual series — Power of Story, Cinema Café presented by Audible, and The Big Conversation — this year’s lineup also includes a New Frontier conversation about artificial intelligence and special 40th Edition Celebration events. The 2024 Sundance Film Festival will honor actress and filmmaker Kristen Stewart; filmmakers Christopher Nolan, Maite Alberdi, and Celine Song; and journalist and producer Pat Mitchell with awards at its annual opening night gala and fundraiser.

Greek non-profit creative incubator Oxbelly has revealed the participants of its 2023 retreat for writers in episodic, fiction and poetry.

Founded by producer and Faliro House founder Christos V. Konstantakopoulos, Oxbelly is known for its screenwriters and directors labs — which run under the artistic direction of Athina Rachel Tsangari — and draws a number of international filmmakers every summer to Greece. Past participating mentors include Maren Ade, Michael Almereyda, Paul Thomas Anderson, Willem Dafoe, Dee Rees and Lulu Wang.

Exclusive: New York-based Women Make Movies has acquired U.S. rights for Palestinian Oscar entry Bye Bye Tiberias by Lina Soualem.

The intimate work sees Soualem accompany her Palestinian-French actress mother Hiam Abbass back to the Arab village within Israeli borders, which she left in the 1980s to pursue her acting career in Europe.

There, they reflect on her past as well as the lives of Abbass’ mother and grandmother in a powerful work exploring themes of displacement, identity and survival across four generations of women.

Wmm executive director Debra Zimmerman said the film was a “perfect fit” for the label, which aims to put spotlight on the work of female filmmakers.

“It is a beautiful film about four generations of Palestinian women,” she said. “I am thrilled that we have the opportunity to have this film seen widely right now by the diverse audiences that need and deserve to see it.

Updated: Apple TV+ has released the latest trailer for its epic World War II drama Masters of the Air. The trailer opens with Austin Butler’s Maj. Gale ‘Buck’ Cleven promising to write letters to his girl while he is away, because “a girl worth writin’ to is hard to find.”

Ever since Saving Private Ryan, it has been nearly impossible not to get excited over a Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks collaboration, especially when it comes to projects surrounding their shared love of World War II. And their latest, Masters of the Air, looks to be a stellar addition to the lineup.

This time around, executive producers Spielberg and Hanks – along with Gary Geotzman who, like the aforementioned men, helped get Band of Brothers and The Pacific on the air – take to the skies, focusing on a group in the United States Army Air Forces. While Band of Brothers and The Pacific were both monumental hits for HBO and won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries, Masters of the Air will be headed to Apple TV+, where it is no doubt one of the most highly anticipated series since the service launched.

Originally developed as a project for HBO, "Masters of the Air" jumped over to Apple TV+ in 2019 as the first in-house production for the studio. Of course, filming a sweeping WWII drama with explosions and flight scenes will take a bit more time than, say, a relatable dramedy like "Shrinking" (not to mention the necessary delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic), but the newest trailer for the highly-anticipated series signals that our wait has not been in vain.

Moroccan filmmaker Asmae El Moudir has made history at the 20th edition of Morocco’s Marrakech Film Festival as the first local director to win its top prize with her hybrid documentary The Mother Of All Lies.

Inspired by the bread riots in El Moudir’s home city of Casablanca in 1981, the work uses a replica of the neighborhood where it happened and figurines to explore the lasting trauma of the event.

The film world premiered at Cannes this year, where it shared the Golden Eye prize for the Best Documentary with Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania’s Four Daughters.

Morocco has since submitted the work as its candidate for Best International Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

Fresh off the strike and newly back to work, American writer-director Dee Rees has set her sights on her next feature – a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness.

“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” says Rees, who’s currently serving on the jury of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.”

This year’s Marrakech International Film Festival opened with a testament to art.

Two months after a devastating earthquake, and in light of the ever-more heart-wrenching news coming out of the Middle East, the film showcase kicked off with a humanist rallying cry voiced by jury president Jessica Chastain.

“In the weeks leading up to the festival, we were not sure that we would even be able to be here,” Chastain said at the Marrakech opening ceremony on Friday. “The world we share is shattered and divided. And so I have immense gratitude… [that] throughout history, art has been used as an accessible tool for communication, raising awareness about social issues and affecting positive change.”

Indeed, now celebrating its 20th edition, the Moroccan event has always sought to shine a celebratory light, emphasizing art and international communion, especially in dark times. Upon taking the stage on Friday, Chastain echoed those overarching sentiments.

The 20th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival has announced its selection, opening with Richard Linklater’s comedy Hit Man.

The event, running from November 24 to December 24, will unfold two months after the devastating earthquake in the nearby Atlas Mountains in September, which killed more than 2,000 people.

The management team has decided to push on with the event to support Marrakech, which suffered very little damage and relies heavily on tourism for its livelihood.

Hit Man will play as part of the festival’s six picture red carpet Gala selection which also includes Matteo Garrone’s Italian Oscar entry Me Captain and Michel Franco’s Memory.

Christopher Nolan, Celine Song and Maite Alberdi will be feted at a gala fundraiser on the opening night of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the nonprofit Sundance Institute said Wednesday.

The Jan. 18 gathering, which will take place at the DeJoria Center, will “raise critical funds to support independent artists year-round through labs, grants and public programming that nurture artists globally.”

Nolan, who started in indie film before becoming the director of large-scale studio blockbusters like this year’s Oppenheimer, will be honored with the first-ever Sundance Institute Trailblazer Award.
