It’s Hollywood, 1958. An aspiring young actress, songwriter, beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin, Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins: Mirror Mirror, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Love Rosie), and her young, ambitious, deeply religious Methodist chauffeur, Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich: Hail, Ceasar!, Blue Jasmin), both struggle with the absurd eccentricities of the wildly unpredictable billionaire they work for, Howard Hughes (Warren Beatty: Dick Tracy, Bonnie & Clyde, Reds, Shampoo). Their attraction to each other not only puts their religious convictions to the test, but also defies Hughes’ #1 rule: no employee is allowed to have any relationship whatsoever with a contract actress. Hughes’ behavior draws them both deeper into his bizarre world and their lives are changed forever.

Warren Beatty's new film, Rules Don't Apply, quietly snuck into UK cinemas last weekend. Here's our review...
Not unreasonably, Howard Hughes is a figure of fascination in cinema. From Leonardo DiCaprio in The Aviator to Terry O'Quinn in The Rocketeer, to characters who were inspired by him, like Willard Whyte in Diamonds Are Forever or Howard Stark in the Marvel cinematic universe, the billionaire businessman's on-screen influence feels fitting for his early status as a movie tycoon.
Now, Warren Beatty directs, produces, writes and stars in Rules Don't Apply, whose convention-busting title reflects the way in which it runs counter to other cinematic treatments by putting the spotlight on two of Hughes' many employees. Set during the tumultuous years of 1958 to 1964, the film focuses on virginal Virginia beauty queen Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins), an actress who's new to Hollywood, and Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich), a chauffeur who drives her around.

Warren Beatty’s first film in 15 years has a wonderful romcom, featuring Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich, at its centre
Though he’s written, directed and produced several films, Warren Beatty is first and foremost a movie star. His first film in 15 years is about movies and movie stars; he centres actors in the frame, knowing when to hold on their faces and let their expressions carry a scene. Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich are almost too good here; too beautiful and too precise. It’s Beatty who is the main event, delivering an inward-looking performance, casting himself as the eccentric, increasingly erratic Howard Hughes, and even writing himself a sex scene (an invocation of Beatty’s promiscuous star persona, perhaps).
Looser, weirder and more fun than a big-budget biopic might purport to be, it takes place in Hughes’s Hollywood. The aviation junkie and billionaire film-maker was an enigma...

Hollywood heavyweight Warren Beatty returns to the director’s chair for the first time this side of the millennium to bring us Rules Don’t Apply; a resourceful slice of contemporary filmmaking that resists following a formula, creatively crafted while never compromising on the narrative at hand, nor the viewer’s emotional investment. Reflecting the film’s unpredictable hero, portrayed by Beatty, the sheer eccentricity and volatility of the role is emblematic of the writer/director’s unique approach to storytelling.
Beatty is Howard Hughes, a billionaire entrepreneur with more money than sense, living in Hollywood in 1958. His newly hired driver Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich) picks up an aspiring young actress Maria Mabrey (Lily Collins) to work for his boss, only for the two to develop feelings for one another, in spite of their conflicting religious beliefs. Warren Beatty, in his first film in 15 years, plays Howard Hughes with the seductive charm, sneaky intelligence and bugfuck eccentricity that this marvelous, mysterious enigma deserves. Who wouldn't want to build a movie around him? But Beatty, as actor, director and screenwriter, has chosen to make Hughes a supporting role. In Rules Don't Apply, the 79-year-old triple threat puts the focus on two fresh newbies who work for the reclusive billionaire. Alden Ehrenreich, soon to play the young Han Solo and richly funny in Hail Caesar, is stranded here as Frank Forbes,...

Rules Don’T Apply opens as a boy-meets-girl tale set in classic Hollywood, an introduction suggesting a light-hearted romance, maybe even romantic comedy, which is how the film is being promoted. And Rules Don’T Apply is that boy-meets-girl tale at first, until Howard Hughes shows up, played by writer/director Warren Beatty. Then the story takes a darker turn and switches from Hollywood romance with contemporary Woody Allen flavor to a Howard Hughes biopic. It is as if Beatty the actor hijacks Beatty the director’s film.
Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins), a small-town beauty queen raised with a strong Baptist faith, arrives in Hollywood with a movie contract from Howard Hughes in hand and her mother (Annette Bening) in tow.

Warren Beatty, who hasn’t directed a movie since Bulworth or acted in one in 15 years, returns to film with Rules Don’t Apply, a 1950s-set sex comedy about hormones, premature ejaculation, religious belief, and the mythology of Howard Hughes that is as intriguing in its idiosyncrasy as it is flat-footed in execution. Its conceit is to turn the mentally ill billionaire Hughes (Beatty) into a stand-in for God, inspiring awe and guilt in a couple of church-going young people who work at his Hollywood film studio: a chauffeur named Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich) and a virginal starlet named Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins). Aside from Beatty’s performance, the only consistent thing the movie has going for it is ineffable strangeness; it seems to be trapped at the bottom of the chasm that separates its subversive aims from its nostalgic pursuits.

Eighteen years after Bulworth and fifteen after Town & Country (his last time directing and acting for a feature film respectively), Warren Beatty returns to the big screen with a fictionalized biography of Howard Hughes forty years in the making. It’s a passion project and vanity project: two endeavors worthy of an auspicious return to the spotlight even if the latter isn’t always the best decision for retaining a renowned legacy. Rules Don’t Apply won’t taint peoples’ image of him, but it’s not going to mark any sort of resurgence in popularity either. If anything it simply reminds us of his onscreen charisma and endearing humor, his handle of Hughes’ descent into eccentricity and insanity proving memorably entertaining. While he’s not the lead, he is the glue.
It’s an interesting move to put the main draw in the background, but that’s exactly what...

Remove Warren Beatty from the equation and expectations of “Rules Don’t Apply” — which he wrote, directed and stars in — would fit the outcome. A sweet, old-fashioned Hollywood romance that just so happens to involve Howard Hughes as a supporting character, Beatty’s long-gestating project is a modestly enjoyable, well-acted nostalgia piece with just a touch of edge. As passion projects go, this one’s disarmingly slight in its ambitions, the opposite of Hughes’ legacy in every way.
At the same time, Beatty’s lively screenplay does a fine job of sketching out a distinct moment in Hughes’ legacy while situating more intimate drama within it. “Rules Don’t Apply” opens in 1964, on the brink of Hughes’ famous phone call to reporters on national television after years of avoiding them. From there, it flashes back six years to a very different occasion: Bright-eyed young actress Marla Collins (Lily Collins) heads...

In yet another season of big-scale awards contenders and franchise-perpetuating blockbusters, a new Warren Beatty movie — nay, a new Warren Beatty movie that’s a Howard Hughes-centered romantic comedy — might be just the thing we need. (Or one of 25 things we need.) To their credit, Fox have pushed the movie a fair amount, and we now have a third trailer in almost as many months.
I’ll abstain from watching this, just as I’ve abstained from viewing the other two, both because I’d rather just see the thing as it unfolds and, with some regard to my desire to see it, it feels strange to get bite-sized versions of a movie that Beatty’s (apparently) been hoping to make since 1973. One month is not really such a wait, I’d think.

Writer, director, and star Warren Beatty shines in the final trailer for “Rules Don’t Apply,” the Oscar winner’s first film in 15 years and his return to big-screen, behind-the-camera work after 1998’s “Bulworth.” Telling a fictionalized Old Hollywood love story between two of entrepreneur and film tycoon Howard Hughes’ employees, Beatty stars as Hughes through his later years, showcasing his infamous eccentricity and reclusiveness without caricaturizing the man’s tender humanity. Lily Collins stars as a young starlet contracted under Hughes, Marla Mabrey, and Alden Ehrenreich plays one of Hughes’ drivers and Mabrey’s forsaken love interest, Frank Forbes. Rounding out the impressive ensemble cast are supporting players Matthew Broderick, Annette Bening, Taissa Farmiga, Ed Harris, Megan Hilty, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, Oliver Platt, and Steve Coogan. “Rules Don’t Apply” makes its world premiere Nov. 10 at the annual AFI Fest, and it will hit theaters nationwide Nov. 23. Written and Directed by Warren Beatty, Rules Don’t Apply is a film in love with film, and hopeful that looking back at a different era, and a different era of filmmaking, is something people will still connect with today.
The movie is overloaded with talent, but centers on a young actress in the ’50s (Lily Collins) who finds herself working for Howard Hughes (Beatty).
The general plot is covered in the trailer, and fairly obvious, but more importantly the film looks to be a fantastic homage that simultaneously uses the most outlandish character to highlight an outlandish era/industry, and showcases the elements of film that turned so many into truly committed cinephiles.
The film hits November 23rd, and also stars: Alden Ehrenreich, Ed Harris, Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, and many more.

Warren Beatty, Hollywood veteran and all-round screen legend, has been quietly plotting his comeback since 2011, when Paramount announced Beatty would write, direct and headline an untitled period flick in what would go on to become his first directorial effort since the turn of the millennium.
That film, one that quickly developed into a passion project for Warren Beatty, is known as Rules Don’t Apply, a star-studded romantic comedy headlined by Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich, your new Han Solo. They’re on board to play Marla Mabrey and dashing driver Frank Forbes, respectively, two young adults in 1950s Hollywood who want nothing more than to make ends meet while working under the seemingly all-consuming shadow of billionaire filmmaker, famed aviator, and notorious womanizer, Howard Hughes.

Coming back to directing for the first time since the last millennium, Warren Beatty recently secured a fitting world premiere for his romantic period piece drama Rules Don’t Apply at AFI Fest on November 10th. Led by Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, Haley Bennett, Taissa Farmiga, Ed Harris, Alec Baldwin, Matthew Broderick, Martin Sheen, Annette Bening, Lousie Linton, and Oliver Platt, not to mention Beatty himself as Howard Hughes, a new trailer has now arrived.
Following a love story between an aspiring actress, her driver, and the eccentric billionaire they both work for, the drama looks to have some refreshing throwback charm. Set to arrive in theaters just before Thanksgiving, we’ll be curious to see if today’s audience is still receptive to Beatty’s old-school style, and hopefully that’ll be the case. Check out the new trailer below.

Warren Beatty's long-in-the-works movie about Howard Hughes, Rules Don't Apply, has been given its first star-studded trailer.
The upbeat clip blends historical fiction and rom-com (à la Woody Allen's recent films) and finds Beatty playing the obsessive-compulsive mogul as an eccentric billionaire goofball — a far cry from Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of Hughes in Martin Scorsese's 2004 biopic, The Aviator.
While Beatty scores several laugh lines in the trailer ("Billionaire, goddammit, not millionaire," he grumbles while watching footage of himself, "and what the hell happened to the close-up of me in the cockpit?...

Warren Beatty’s new romantic comedy “Rules Don’t Apply” follows an aspiring actress, a lovable driver, and the eccentric Hollywood legend Howard Hughes (played by Beatty himself) as they struggle with each other’s own idiosyncrasies. Set in Hollywood in 1958, small town beauty queen and Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins) arrives to Los Angeles to work under Howard Hughes. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich), a religious Methodist who’s engaged to be married to his middle school sweetheart. Soon they fall for each other, and their attraction puts their respective religious convictions to the test, and also places them in violation of Hughes’ #1 rule: No employee will have a relationship with a contract actress. But as Hughes’ behavior becomes more erratic and strange, it intersects with Marla and Frank’s lives in challenging, compelling ways, leaving no one unchanged. The film also...

Warren Beatty is finally returning to the director’s chair for the first time since 1998 with Rules Don’t Apply, a romantic period piece that the legendary talent also penned. He has assembled quite a cast, including Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, Haley Bennett, Taissa Farmiga, Ed Harris, Alec Baldwin, Matthew Broderick, Martin Sheen, Annette Bening, Lousie Linton, and Oliver Platt, not to mention Beatty in his first acting gig since 2001.
The plot is described as an “unconventional love story” wherein an aspiring actress, her driver, and the eccentric billionaire they both work for are entangled. That eccentric billionaire is Howard Hughes (Beatty), a character the writer-director has been driving to put on the big screen himself since 1973. The first trailer has now landed ahead of a fall release and can be seen below.

Warren Beatty was last in front of a camera 15 years ago; 18 years have passed since he last directed a movie; and it's been even longer since Beatty, 79, first flirted with the idea of making a movie that involved legendarily elusive and eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. Now, in an exclusive interview with Beatty, People and Entertainment Weekly has learned that all three of those streaks will finally come to an end on Nov. 11, when Fox releases Rules Don't Apply - an unconventional love story set in 1958 Hollywood which the Oscar-winner wrote, directed and produced. He will also appear in the film as Hughes himself.
