"Tell him he's a good boy," she says, after a long list of other instructions. Not so much casting a shadow as of one, a small black creature. She's not got much experience with dogs, the dog sitter. "Perfect," he says.
So, or at least close to it, is the film. Small space, smaller antagonist. High tension, even some low humour. Lower angles too, the camera behind those ears. Looking out from above that empty brow. Not just the visual, though plenty of wit and skill in that. Patricia Allison brings a physicality to a role that requires it, ennui, caution, violence.
Eros Vlahos has crafted a film that's a dry treat. Meaty and crisp. The terrors of the notionally domesticated run as wild as wolves, but you don't need to drop a hint as heavy as three boxes of Transylvanian soil to suggest that there's something more super- than natural at.

"Like this post or he'll eat your blood!!" Omg, click click click!! There's clever two minute short films, and then there's amazingly clever two minute short films. This one is the latter. Double Tap is a clever horror comedy short from Greek filmmaker Eros Vlahos (aka @Eros_V) and it packs a punch in only 2 minutes, 42 seconds of footage. A screen-obsessed teen ignores an Instagram meme chain and unleashes a Dickless Troll. Big mistake. Starring Olive Grey and "The Dickless Troll". Described by Short of the Week: "There are films that demand a theatrical viewing. Films where the director would have nightmares at the thought of a person hunched over their mobile device watching their hard work on a 5.6" screen – this isn't one of them." Ha. So true! This is one of the best takes on social media horror I've ever seen. Click below - or don't? Thanks to Short...

In season 3, Da Vinci's Demons is getting harder and harder to follow...
This review contains spoilers.
3.5 Anima Venator
Da Vinci's Demons has been kind of problematic for me throughout its third season thus far. It seems like everything is different, all the ideas of the first two seasons are just scrambled up to make everything a muddled, grey mess. Are the Sons of Mithras the bad guys? Are the Labyrinth bad guys? Sure, when you look at the surface, it's the bad guys like Carlo Medici and Riario involved in the Labyrinth and the Sons of Mithras have Leo's old ally Al-Rahim Aka The Turk (Alexander Siddig) and the true pope, Francesco (James Faulkner). However, one side is fighting to defend Italy and the other wide is actively assaulting and killing the people of the peninsula and by extension the Catholic Church.

Da Vinci's Demons ends its second season on another mighty cliffhanger. Here's Ron's review...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
2.10 The Sins Of Daedalus
Every season, American television shows end on some sort of cliffhanger in the hopes of creating enough fan interest to get renewed for another season. Even successful shows, like Da Vinci's Demons, fall into this pattern because at the end of the day, even when you know you're coming back for a third season, you want to keep the fans talking. You want the fans to be on the edge of their seats, waiting to see how this situation unfolds, because a good finale leads right to a killer season debut. (See this season's debut episode for more on that.) This is a season finale leaving on such a cool moment that it actually made me angry.

Da Vinci’s Demons, Season 1, Episode 1: “The Hanged Man”
Written and Directed by David S. Goyers
Airs Fridays at 9 pm on Starz
All the promotional material about Da Vinci’s Demons trades heavily on David S. Goyer’s contribution to The Dark Knight Trilogy. So it seems more than fair to discuss one in relation to the other, especially in light of so many obvious similarities. The most conspicuous parallel being a tortured hero with a complicated family history who relies on his wits and gadgetry, more so than physical prowess, to strike out against injustice in a city rife with political corruption. And that’s just the story. Several other earmarks of Goyer’s handiwork also show up in the pilot, such as its flashback structure and most notably the heavy helping of Eastern mysticism.
Unfortunately, several of The Dark Knight’s shortcomings inevitably repeat here as well.

In one of the most fitting transitions of the TV season, Starz's series premiere of "Da Vinci's Demons" immediately follows the series finale of the network's signature hit "Spartacus." Both shows mix generous doses of sex and violence with historical details that could best be described as ... creative.
Not that historical accuracy is the point of this brand of Starz series. They're really all about the bare skin, buckets of blood, and enough soapy twists and turns to keep viewers hooked. Some detractors may write them off as guilty pleasures, but why feel guilty if watching a show is actually pleasurable?
While the first two episodes of "Da Vinci" are overly convoluted -- good luck keeping track of who's who, what their allegiances are, and sometimes even what they look like in the more dimly lit "atmospheric" scenes -- the action moves at such a rapid pace and unfolds with...

Born in the middle of the 15th century, during the Renaissance, artist and visionary Leonardo da Vinci was one of the most brilliant and restless minds of a glittering and restive age.
One would think that sticking 100 percent of the time to the facts of the life of a man described by contemporary Giorgio Vasari as having a "beauty of body never sufficiently extolled," an "infinite grace" and "great bodily strength," with a "spirit and courage ever royal and magnanimous" would be enough for a dramatic cable series.
And that's not even mentioning the major works of art he's known best for: the enigmatic portrait "Mona Lisa," the reverent and yet dynamic "The Last Supper," and one of the most famous pen-and-ink drawings of all time, depicting the beauty of proper proportions, called 'Vitruvian Man."

When "Da Vinci's Demons" premieres on Starz (Friday, April 12 at 10 p.m. Est), viewers will be treated to a very different portrayal of the renowned artist and inventor. While Tom Riley's Leonardo da Vinci is undoubtedly a thinker, David S. Goyer's vision also paints him as a lover and a fighter in equal measure.
In the behind-the-scenes video below, Goyer admits that the series reimagines Da Vinci "as a superhero adventurer; he's a little bit Indiana Jones, a little bit Bruce Wayne." Since Goyer is the man responsible for writing the blockbuster "Dark Knight" trilogy and the upcoming Superman reboot "Man of Steel," we're guessing he knows what he's talking about when it comes to superheroes.
Check out the new preview for the Starz series, featuring Goyer, Riley, executive producer Jane Tranter, and co-stars Eros Vlahos, Lara Pulver, Tom Bateman, Michael Elwyn and James Faulkner.

Chicago – Magical nannies, dancing animals, great gusts of wind, lyrical life lessons and cute kids in need of a father. You don’t need to be practically perfect in every way in order to find these ingredients a trifle familiar. Robert Stevenson’s 1964 masterpiece “Mary Poppins” used these elements better than anyone has before or since, resulting in what is unquestionably the best live-action Disney film ever made.
“Poppins” is also one of the most influential children’s pictures ever made, inspiring countless variations and copy-cats. Yet Cristianna Brand’s “Nurse Matilda” books took the formula and peppered it with gleefully macabre wit. They centered on a hideously ugly nursemaid who resembled the Supernanny from Hell, until her charges started to become well behaved, thus erasing her multiple blemishes. In 2005, Emma Thompson adapted the books into “Nanny McPhee,” a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy that felt like the offspring of P.L. Travers and Roald Dahl.

It's just as well that the sequel to 2005's Nanny McPhee has already earned close to $63 million abroad, for it certainly won't appeal to anyone who didn't watch (and enjoy) the original movie. It also doesn't help that, on this side of the pond, the filmmakers saw fit to confront Yanks with the following tagline: "Who's Your Nanny?" Back in England, however, this sequel is properly known as Nanny McPhee & the Big Bang, which is essentially what you'd expect from this franchise with the added twist that this adventure (presumably) travels back in time, so that the titular character can attend to a different family in need of a helping hand (not to mention the opportunity to wave that magic stick around a bit more).
Once again, Emma Thompson reprises double duties as both screenwriter (adapting from Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda children's stories) and supernaturally gifted nanny. As expected,...

Nanny McPhee Returns
Directed by: Susanna White
Cast: Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans, Maggie Smith

This weekend is set to be a crowded one at the cinema, as five new flicks receive the wide-release treatment. None of them — from "Piranha 3D" to "Vampires Suck" — are likely to come out on top at the box office, as "The Expendables" looks to commandeer the top spot for a second straight week.
Of all the fresh faces, though, Emma Thompson might well perform the best, as "Nanny McPhee Returns," which the 51-year-old Brit both wrote and stars in, arrives on U.S. shores more than four years after the original film. The latest installment has already grossed $62.6 million overseas.
How will it fair domestically? Reviews are largely positive, though it remains to be seen if "Nanny McPhee" can overtake the "Twilight" parody,...

Emma Thompson's sequel charms many critics, but it's way too saccharine for others.

I was not particularly fond of the first .Nanny McPhee. movie released in 2005. While I found the cast, headed by Emma Thompson as the magical nanny, appealing, the film was ultimately unrewarding. So to my surprise, the sequel, simply called .Nanny McPhee Returns,. is not only satisfying, it.s also quite delightful.
Just like the first film, this one is also written by Thompson based on characters created by Christianna Brand from the .Nurse Matilda. books. The Academy award-winning actress and screenwriter also returns as the unusual and hideous-looking woman who calls herself a .government nanny..
Maggie Gyllenhaal stars as Isabel Green, a mother of three who is nearing her wits ends. Her husband, Rory (Ewan McGregor), is off to war and she.s left alone to take care of the farm and the family. To make matters worse, Isabel must deal with her brother-in-law, Phil (Rhys Ifans), who has...

Children will love this new Emma Thompson effort about the hideously ugly nanny, writes Philip French
Emma Thompson is back as writer and star in another lively adventure of the hideously ugly nanny who loses one of her facial disfigurements each time her unruly charges learn the latest of the five lessons she teaches them. The setting has been updated to the Second World War and farmer's wife Maggie Gyllenhaal is simultaneously maintaining an English accent and a farm, which she runs while hubby is away at the war. She's helped by Nanny McPhee, her three kids and eventually two rich cousins. Meanwhile, her brother, an archetypal spiv (Rhys Ifans), tries to steal the farm. Children will love it, adults will find it tolerable. Maggie Smith and Ralph Fiennes make brief guest appearances and there's a performance of astonishing confidence from the exotically named 15-year-old Eros Vlahos as an outrageous little snob.

A refreshingly old-fashioned piece of family entertainment, Nanny McPhee And The Big Bang proves to be an enjoyable sequel...
For anyone who says they don't make films like they used to any more, Nanny McPhee And The Big Bang provides a pleasant reminder that, in fact, sometimes they do. A refreshingly old-fashioned venture into Enid Blyton territory dressed up with the occasional big CGI flourish, it's a nicely played story of childhood adventure and the importance of family.
Fans of the original Nanny McPhee will likewise enjoy Big Bang. Emma Thompson, scripting again, leaves things pretty much as they were before. Though set 100 years after the first film (we're now in World War II), it's a familiar story of a parent (Maggie Gyllenhaal's Mrs Green, whose husband is off fighting) over-run by unruly kids and a financial problem to solve.
Where its predecessor had Colin Firth's widower needing...
