Even if you're not a big reader of young adult fiction, you may have seen the advertisements for the new Chloë Grace Moretz movie The 5th Wave and suspected that it looks like the kind of movie that was adapted from a Ya franchise. All the elements are there: a post-apocalyptic dystopia, a winsome female protagonist who stands up to become the world's champion, an imperiled younger sibling and the winning combination of light science fiction and teenaged angst. The 5th Wave is the first in a trilogy of books by Rick Yancey about a group of underage rebels fighting off an alien invasion.

This Teen Reads Tuesday, there are more than a half dozen new Young Adult fiction titles hitting shelves! Alex Flinn, who’s known for her “Beastly” adaptation of “Beauty & the Beast” has done it again with “Towering,” a reinterpretation of “Rapunzel.” Meanwhile, debut author Lauren Miller has been getting some attention for her new release, “Parallel,” the book trailer for which is pretty vexing indeed, and there are several others hitting shelves as well. Attached are the cover images and plot descriptors for “Parallel” by Lauren Miller, “Winger” by Andrew Smith, “Towering” by Alex Finn, “The Year of Luminous Love” by Lurlene McDaniel, “The Cydonian Pyramid” (“Klaatu Diskos Series #2”) by Pete Hautman, “The Beautiful and the ...

Chicago – What higher power in Hollywood decided that Alex Pettyfer should be allowed to have a film career? His “Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker” didn’t exactly set the world on fire, nor did “I Am Number Four.” He has the name of a Bond girl and the emotional range of Miley Cyrus. And yet, the dude is still considered bankable, purely because of his good looks. Apparently it’s more important to look like a movie star than to act like one.
Such Hollywood hypocrisy makes a tween weepie like “Beastly” all the more hideous. Here’s a film that clearly doesn’t believe in the message it preaches. Though the screenplay (based on Alex Flinn’s novel) champions inner beauty, the cast consists of actors who obviously haven’t been chosen for their personality. The filmmakers expect their audience to heed the fable’s cautionary message even if they don’t.

A tween retelling of Beauty and the Beast hardly raises expectations very high, and though Beastly is for all intents and purposes a strange, failed experiment, it’s surprisingly not as bad as you’d expect, even if a messy screenplay still hampers the good efforts of the cast. Undemanding teens may find some delights in this urban update of the classic tale, but for everyone else, it feels too mild, contrived, and dispassionate.
In as much as transposing the rustic tale onto a contemporary setting, the tale – adapted from Alex Flinn’s novel – fares well enough; our Prince is this time the arrogant, good-looking Kyle Kingston (Alex Pettyfer), who becomes student body president and in this stead plays a cruel trick on an alienated, goth-type classmate, Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen). However, Kendra’s dark, witchy attire is no mere affront; she is actually a witch, and casts a spell on Kyle,...

It sure does suck to be ugly.
Not that Kyle Kingson (Alex Pettyfer) would know much about that; he's the handsomest bit of handsome at his school, and he sure does know it. He runs for Class President on the basis that his good looks alone should be worth voting for (seriously - that's his platform), and wins. He has a gorgeous girlfriend, tons of friends, and the adoration of his entire school. The world is his.
Things go awry when he makes the wrong move of inviting the school witch to the big dance, only to stand her up at the dance's front door, loudly, in public, and with oodles of mean contempt. The witch (and we know she's a witch because she dresses like it's...

CBS Films once again moves the release date for "Beastly". After it was pushed back from the original 2010 slot to March 18, 2011, the movie is now scheduled to open two weeks earlier on March 4 in theaters across the nation, according to Box Office Mojo.
With the new release date, the drama starring Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer will face a competition with "The Adjustment Bureau", "Apollo 18", "Rango", and "Take Me Home Tonight". "Beastly" was previously retracted from July 30, 2010 line-up because CBS Films did not want Hudgens and her then boyfriend Zac Efron's fans to choose between his film "Charlie St. Cloud" and her own movie.
Another distributor Millennium Films, meanwhile, has just announced a release date for its upcoming movie "Trust". The drama thriller is set to hit limited U.S. cinemas on April 1. Other films which will also open in selected theaters that day are "Super" and "Rubber...

A new international one-sheet, German in fact, for 'Beastly' has certainly given it's two young stars Alex Pettyfer ('Alex Rider: Stormbreaker', 'I Am Number Four') and Vanessa Hudgens - below ('High School Musical', 'Sucker Punch') a skin tone enhancement. The new flick is a 'modern retelling' of the classic 'Beauty and the Beast' type tale. Not being a huge Pettyfer fan myself (I find him quite irritating) I'm sure endless drones of young dribbling girls will be swarming towards theatres come this March. Peter Krause, Dakota Johnson, Erik Knudsen, Mary-Kate Olsen and 'How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris also star. 'Beastly' is based on the novel by Alex Flinn and has writer/director Daniel Barnz holding it all together....

Daniel Barnz weaves his magic on Alex Flinn's novel and transforms "Beastly" into a feature film. Alex Pettyfer is certainly hogging up the big screen in the spring as he leads the cast that includes Vanessa Hudgens, Neil Patrick Harris, Mary-Kate Olsen, Erik Knudsen and Peter Krause.Kyle Kingson (Pettyfer) has it all - looks, intelligence, wealth and opportunity - and a wicked cruel streak. Prone to mocking and humiliating "aggressively unattractive" classmates, he zeroes in on Goth classmate Kendra (Olsen), inviting her to the school's extravagant environmental bash. Kendra accepts, and, true to form, Kyle blows her off in a particularly savage fashion. She retaliates by casting a spell that physically transforms him into everything he despises. Enraged by his horrible and unrecognizable appearance he confronts Kendra and learns that the only solution to the curse is to find someone that will love him as he is - a task he considers impossible.

News on Daniel Barnz's movie version of Alex Flinn's popular young adult novel Beastly has been a little on the slow side recently, with only trailers and a couple of cast interviews made readily available to fans. This is most likely due to the movie's original July 2010 release date being moved to March 2011, which was announced on the official Beastly Facebook page.
But at least a new poster for the movie was released on the Facebook page, showing main stars Alex Pettyfer (Stormbreaker) and Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) staring longingly into each other's eyes. The tagline states "Love is Never Ugly," for reasons that are, well, visibly clear.

One new poster has come out for "Beastly" and "Devil" each. The image for the romantic movie still puts lead stars Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer as the highlight with a message which reads, "Love is never ugly," tagged on the top side. The one-sheet additionally displays new U.S. release date for the film which is March 18, 2011.
Meanwhile, the fresh poster for "Devil" is debuted via Empire Online. But instead of featuring the film's characters, the artwork only captures a shot of an elevator where the story in the movie is mostly set. To emphasize more on the supernatural element, the elevator in the picture unleashes an unusual red light.

Yet another fairy tale retelling, this one a modernised take on Sleeping Beauty. Talia is a spoiled and bored princess who since she was old enough to understand what people said to her, has been told that she must avoid spindles, because of a spell placed on her during her christening. Talia doesn't actually know what a spindle is, as all such things have been banned from the country, but on her sixteenth birthday, as she is wandering through the palace trying on dresses to find the perfect one for her birthday ball, and she finds an old lady who lets her play with her interesting spinning device - and just like that, Talia and the entire kingdom of Euphrasia (right next to Belgium) fall asleep and the country disappears off the map.
Three hundred years later, spoiled and bored American teenager Jack is on a three week, all-expenses paid tour of Europe.

The Twilight-ification of culture continues with this modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast called Beastly. Based on the book by Alex Flinn, it stars Alex Pettyfer (Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker) as Kyle Kingson, a popular and wealthy teenager who gets cursed by a goth chick (Mary Kate Olsen) after he stands her up at the school dance. He transforms into a hideously deformed creature and is banished by his father to live in seclusion in a house in Brooklyn. While here he is schooled by a blind tutor (Neil Patrick Harris), and finds true love after promising to protect the daughter of a drug addict (Vanessa Hudgens). No, I'm not making any of this up. The movie is directed by Daniel Barnz (Phoebe in Wonderland) and is produced by CBS Films, the same people behind Extraordinary Measures and The Back-up Plan. I can't quite figure out if it's supposed to be part comedy,...
