With less than a month until the debut of “Vikings: Valhalla,” Netflix has dropped the final trailer for the “Vikings” sequel series — and it introduces several characters who will become heroes to the Danes.

Leif Erikson, the famed Viking who is believed to have made it to North America, is introduced in this new show, set about 100 years after the original “Vikings” series, in the 11th century. The trailer shows Leif (Sam Corlett) and his Greenland crew, including sister Freydis (Frida Gustavsson), facing off against monster-sized waves on their journey to the famed Kattegat.

The trailer also introduces Prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Stuer), another famed Viking from history, and shows him getting very, very bloody fighting the English.

“Vikings: Valhalla” sees the clash of the Vikings and the English royals as they reach a breaking point over their conflicting Christian and pagan beliefs.

Netflix has released a teaser for “Vikings: Valhalla,” a spinoff series of the original “Vikings” saga set to premiere Feb. 25 on the streaming platform.

“Vikings: Valhalla” takes place over a thousand years ago in the early 11th century, chronicling the adventures of famous Vikings in history — notably explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), his sister Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson) and Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter). In the series, tensions between Vikings and English royals violently climax and an epic journey across oceans (and bloody battlefields) begins.

“Vikings: Valhalla” takes place more than 100 years after the end of the “Vikings” series, which started close to the year 793 and explored several decades after. “Vikings” was loosely based on Norse and Icelandic sagas — focusing on Viking Ragnar Lothbrok and later the lives of Ragnar’s family. The original show ran for six seasons between 2013 and 2020 on the History Channel.

Just as Disney Plus, HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video are revving up their fantasy, horror and sci-fi series slates for winter 2021-2022 debuts, Netflix is touting the abundance of genre series headed to the streamer.

Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, announced premiere details for a slew of “geeky” shows, as well as returning fan-favorites like “Locke & Key” and “The Umbrella Academy.”

“In my ten years at Netflix, it’s been thrilling to see the dropped jaws, the all-caps tweets/the hilarious memes and the passionate theories inspired by these once-in-a-lifetime moments,” Friedlander wrote in a blog post. “Genre stories have the power to transport us to new universes like the Upside Down in ‘Stranger Things,’ teach us new vocabulary like ‘The Witcher’ and, most importantly, unite us in our shared love of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, anime and everything in between.

The film Blue Moon is separated into five parts, respectively labeled “red”, “orange”, “yellow”, “green” and “blue”. These parts can be presented in different orders, weaving 120 possible stories of a romantic triangle. This experimental film breathes the mysteriousness, possibilities and impermanence of romance; it also explores the nature of urbanity and how people live and love in a city.

Director Ko I-cheng will introduce his film in a video before each screening starts and he will attend the post screening video chat of the screening of Blue Moon (Audience’s Choice) , Jessey Tsang (Hong Kong director) and Dr.

Films from mainland China are completely absent from the list of nominees announced Tuesday for the annual Golden Horse Awards. And with only a handful of titles from Hong Kong on the list, the competition has devolved into a mostly Taiwanese affair.

The awards, based in Taiwan and chaired by Oscar-winner Ang Lee, have traditionally been considered the most prestigious prizes for films in the Chinese language. But a political spat at last year’s ceremony, where a Taiwanese award-winner infuriated mainland Chinese attendees and the Beijing regime by giving a speech in favor of Taiwanese independence, sparked a pullout by mainland films from this year’s contest. China considers self-governing, democratic Taiwan as part of its rightful territory, to be retaken by force if necessary.

Hong Kong titles in the running for Golden Horse Awards include Ray Yeung’s “Suk Suk,” best song nominee “My Prince Edward,” and documentary “Bamboo Theatre.

“Synapses,” a Taiwanese family drama directed by Chang Tso-chi, has been set as the opening film of the 2019 edition of the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan. “The Garden of Evening Mists,” a Malaysia-set reconciliation drama directed by Taiwan’s Tom Lin Shu-yu, will close the event.

The festival, which runs Nov. 7-24, has not yet revealed its complete lineup, so it is too early to assess the full impact of the mainland Chinese boycott of the festival and its prestigious Golden Horse Film Awards. But the selection of two Taiwanese films may be indicative.

China’s National Film Administration has banned mainland Chinese talent and film from participating in the festival and awards as a result of last year’s prize ceremony, at which one of the winners called for Taiwanese independence. China regards Taiwan as a rebel province with which it will ultimately be reunited, by force if necessary.
