Exclusive: We hear that New Line’s 8-Bit Christmas will premiere exclusively on HBO Max on Nov. 25th, in all countries where the service is available, meaning U.S. and Latin America. Here in the U.S., that date is Thanksgiving Day, a prime time for watching holiday movies on the couch. 8-Bit Christmas will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures in the remaining offshore markets.
8-Bit Christmas is a humorous and heartfelt look back at the adventures of childhood. Set in suburban Chicago in the late 1980s, the story centers on ten-year-old Jake Doyle’s (Winslow Fegley) herculean quest to get the latest and greatest video game system for Christmas.
Michael Dowse directs Neil Patrick Harris, Fegley, June Diane Raphael, Steve Zahn from a script by Kevin Jakubowski based on his novel. Producers are King Richard‘s Tim White, Trevor White, Allan Madelbaum — through their Star Thrower banner — Nick Nantell and Jonathan Sadowski.

Just a few moments ago, the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations were revealed to the public, continuing on with Phase One of the awards season. This precursor marks another new point in the race, as many of these movies nominated today will be contending for Oscar attention as well. Removed from the Academy Award race though, this is just a great precursor because of what it nominates. The films are small in budget and often need a leg up, so this is a spotlight on what the viewing public should be searching out in theaters and at home on Blu-Ray or VOD. Congrats to the nominees and read on to see who and what they were… You’ll see all of the nominees below, but as you’ll be able to tell, it appears to be a race between Call Me By Your Name, The Florida Project, Get Out, and Lady Bird,...

Getting send up to prison is no picnic in the movies or in real life, but having someone on the outside waiting for you to get out can sometimes make that experience bearable. And for the titular "Jamesy Boy," he'll need that support as he tries to turn things around behind bars. Directed by Trevor White, and starring James Woods, Mary-Louise Parker, Ving Rhames, Taissa Farmiga, Taboo (from the Black Eyed Peas) with newcomer Spencer Lofranco (who will also feature in Angelina Jolie's forthcoming "Unbroken"), the drama tells the story of the teenage James whose street gang activity sees him wind up in a maximum security prison, where a convicted murderer becomes his mentor. And in this exclusive clip, he gets a visitor from home and shares what his one Christmas wish will be. "Jamesy Boy" arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on February 25th. Watch below.

Ostensibly based on a true story, Trevor White’s Jamesy Boy recounts the ascension, demise and redemption of James Burns, a cavalier gang member whose story is an all too American one — he fell into a life of crime on the streets of Baltimore as a 14 year old, did some hard time, and was, somewhat astoundingly given then unrepentantly punitive nature of our disenfranchisement factories known as prisons, the better for it. Based on a true story, Jamesy Boy is accomplished-enough inspirational fare to attract the likes of Mary-Louise Parker (as a desperate single mom), James Woods (as a hard-nosed warden) and Ving Rhames (as a convicted murderer/mentor) in supporting roles. First-time feature writer-director Trevor White has shaped the rise, fall and redemption of teenage street thug James Burns (newcomer Spencer Lofranco) into parallel storylines, crosscutting between the three years leading up to his incarceration and the few months he spends in maximum-security prison (after four years in juvie)....

Jamesy Boy is an unconvincing portrait of a teen’s fall into a pit of crime and his eventual redemption that comes with time served in the pen, for two reasons. First, a formulaic script from Lane Shadgett and Trevor White puts its delinquent protagonist, James Burns, into a lot of questionable situations that seem engineered to ruin the character and forecast his eventual downfall – although they makes precious little sense. Second, newcomer Spencer Lofranco looks dazed and confused as Burns, although he also looks too squeaky clean and model cute to pass as a tormented teenage thug. Although it is based on a true story (of the film’s co-producer), Jamesy Boy is definitely not a genuine representation of Burns’ troubled past.

Unfortunately, while its redemptive arc offers minor chord catharsis for those predisposed to embrace adapted tales of real salvation, the movie never pushes past a comfortable orbit of earnestness in search of deeper truths. In Trevor White's debut feature film "Jamesy Boy," newly imprisoned James Burns finds a mentor in Conrad, a convicted murderer who tries to help the boy get his life together. The film also marks Spencer Lofranco's, who plays James and has recently joined the cast of Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken," first leading role. Last year, he had a small role in "At Middleton," a film starring Vera Farmiga and rising star Taissa Farmiga, who appears with Lofranco in the clip below. In the clips we see the beginnings of a romance between Lofranco, sporting a punkish hairdo and bruised eye, and Farmiga, whose father owns the convenience store in the scene. The two share some awkward glances, loaded laughs and a magic trick -- all very palpable for their blossoming romance. James Burns's story is extraordinary, but it doesn't seem like one that needs to be told.
In Jamesy Boy, director Trevor White frames the former teen gang member's life as an uplifting coming-of-age prison drama that feels entirely disconnected from the realities of incarceration. Worse, White's decision to shackle his film to a redemptive arc ends up making Burns's story an argument for juvenile imprisonment.
Jamesy Boy crisscrosses between Burns (Spencer Lofranco) at age 14, when he was an apple-cheeked thug, and age 18, when the pretty-boy convict is up for parole. James has been intermittently institutionalized for violence since age six, but the film is too timid to show him at his worst. Instead of delving into Burns's underlying psychological issues,...

Making the jump from TV (American Horror Story) to film in a strong fashion is Taissa Farmiga, who, according to Variety, will take some of first feature roles with Sofia Coppola‘s Bling Ring and the indie drama Jamesy Boy. The former of those two had its big casting break just some 24 hours ago, when Emma Watson was signed to play the ringmaster of a gang who stole jewelry from various L.A.-based celebrities; Farmiga will appear as a member of this group.
Jamesy Boy is smaller scale and (likely) harder-hitting, being the tale of a young boy, James (Spencer Lofranco), “who goes from suburban street gang to a maximum-security prison, where he’s mentored by a convicted murderer (Ving Rhames).” Farmiga is joining a cast also comprised of James Woods and Mary Louise-Parker, in which she has the part of Lofranco‘s love interest. Trevor White has...

Taissa Farmiga's horrors are turning into her hirings.
The much younger sister of former Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga may have gotten her breakthrough in the television horror business when she was plucked to headline the premiere season of "American Horror Story" after a small appearance in Vera Farmiga's directorial debut "Higher Ground," but she'll be taking steps three and four in the direction of crime-related films.
Farmiga and most of her "Horror Story" castmates are being replaced for the second season, as showrunners announced in December their plans to have each new season of the series spotlight a separate haunting (with a new family and location).
According to Variety, Farmiga has nothing to be spooked about, though, as she's landed two back-to-back movie leads.

First-time feature director Trevor White has rounded up a strong cast for his debut Jamesy Boy. THR reveals Mary-Louise Parker, Ving Rhames, and James Woods have signed on, which speaks well for the script, penned by White and Lane Shadgett. Based on the true story of James Burns, Jamesy Boy follows the suburban teen's trajectory from small town Colorado gangs to a maximum security prison packed with hardened criminals. In this hostile surrounding Burns unexpectedly discovers a kinship with a convicted murderer, who ultimately becomes a friend and mentor to the young man, spurring him to positive personal change. Rhames is set to play the murderer turned mentor, with Woods portraying a detention center authority figure and Parker playing the boy's mother. But who will be Jamesy Boy? That weighty role has been awarded to newcomer Spencer Lofranco, who will be making his screen debut with this film. While that's...

Fans of Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker have cause to celebrate. A new movie role has been announced for the actress. Her Weeds character is no stranger to crime, and her new character may be a little bit of the same. The drama is called Jamesy Boy.
Joining Parker are Ving Rhames and James Woods for the Trevor White directed and co-written project. This is White’s feature film debut. Shooting starts March 4th in Baltimore, Maryland. The lead role of James was won by newcomer Spencer LoFranco.
James is based on a real life teenager by the name of James Burns. He goes from life in a street gang, to a stint in a scary maximum-security prison populated with the worst kind of criminals. Believe it or not, it is in prison where James bonds with a convicted murderer. Are you thinking this story is just a tad like Shawshank?...

Seeing as he’s only making a directorial debut with Jamesy Boy, Trevor White can count himself as a very luck man. According to Deadline, Mary-Louise Parker, James Woods, and Ving Rhames have all signed for the indie drama, written by the director and Lane Shadgett.
With Boy, things are told from the perspective of a young man, James (Spencer Lofranco), who “goes from suburban street gangs to a maximum-security prison surrounded by hardened criminals,” but soon “fosters an unlikely friendship with a convicted murderer who ends up becoming his mentor and ultimately defines and changes the course of his life.” THR gives a little more insight in the casting realm, noting that Parker will play the boy’s mother; Rhames, his mentor; and Woods has the part of “an authority figure at a detention center.” (The description for a James Woods character if I’ve ever heard one.) Not a bad collection of players,...

After a few low-profile years, James Woods is once again racking up the film projects. Following Straw Dogs and the recently completed Officer Down, he's signed for The Stone Pony and may also direct An American Girl. As if that wasn't plenty to be going on with, Woods has now joined the cast of Jamesy Boy, a true-life crime drama in which he'll co-star with Ving Rhames and Mary-Louise Parker. It sounds a bit like A Prophet (not to be confused with The Prophet, which appears elsewhere this morning), a bit like Felon, and a bit like any number of other prison movies. This one's about James Burns, a street-gang member who finds himself thrown in clink. There he forges an unlikely mentor-student relationship with a reformed murderer, who helps him see life from a new perspective. Hey, maybe it is like The Prophet after all. The roles earmarked for Woods,...
