Robert Pattinson out of ‘Mission: Blacklist’ movie (photo: Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson in ‘Life’) Robert Pattinson and Mission: Blacklist have parted ways. Pattinson, whose name had been attached to the project for two years — since Cannes 2012 — has reportedly dropped out due to scheduling issues. Now, what could those issues be? Well, Robert Pattinson, best known (at least for the time being) as the vampire Edward Cullen in the immensely popular Twilight movie franchise, has no less than two movies opening at Cannes 2014: David Michôd’s thriller The Rover, co-starring Guy Pearce, which will be shown as one of Cannes’ Midnight Screenings, and David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, also featuring Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Mia Wasikowska, and Carrie Fisher, and which is in the running for the Palme d’Or. There’s more: Robert Pattinson has recently completed work on Anton Corbijn’s Life, with Pattinson as photographer Dennis Stock,...

Robert Pattinson and David Cronenberg ‘Maps to the Stars’ gets German distribution, Toronto screening Starring Robert Pattinson, Julianne Moore, John Cusack, and Mia Wasikowska, Maps to the Stars has found a German distributor. Screen Daily reports that Christian Meinke’s Mfa+ has acquired the rights to the David Cronenberg-directed Hollywood satire at the American Film Market, recently held in Santa Monica. Mfa+ also picked up Vincent Grashaw’s feature debut Coldwater and Tobias Lindholm’s Danish thriller A Hijacking / Kapringen, which has a similar premise to that of the Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks hit Captain Phillips. (Photo: Robert Pattinson on the set of Maps to the Stars.) In Map to the Stars, John Cusack (replacing Viggo Mortensen) plays a Los Angeles analyst and self-help guru whose wife (Olivia Williams) is immersed in the career of their teen star son (Evan Bird), fresh off of rehab. Even the oh-so-sexy Robert Pattinson gets a little squeamish before a big sex scene. While speaking with Germany's Interview magazine, the Twilight heartthrob opened up about his 2009 flick Little Ashes, in which he played surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. The film chronicled a passionate love affair between the Spanish artist and poet Ferdico García Lorca (played by Javier Beltrán), and the 27-year-old actor recalls one particularly steamy scene where the pair got intimate in a pool. "The Dali production was the worst, it was mortifying," he confessed to the mag. "We were all hanging out by the pool, trying to loosen up. I was nervously clinging to the edge—and before I...

On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Whether as a result of poor critical/box-office reception, (perceived) local sensibilities, and/or censorship, the movie you watch in, say, Canada isn't necessarily the exact same movie watched by someone in Singapore,...

Javier Beltrán, Robert Pattinson in Little Ashes Paul Morrison’s Little Ashes, starring Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dali (!), won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film — Limited release dealing with gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people. The other nominees in that category were Casi Divas, The Country Teacher, Phoebe in Wonderland, and The Secrets. Written by Philippa Goslett, Little Ashes depicts a purported romance between Dali and left-wing poet Federico García Lorca (played by Javier Beltrán), with Lorca feeling comfortable about his sexual orientation and Dali all conflicted about it. The former was later murdered during the Spanish Civil War, while the later became a successful artist and radical right-winger. Matthew McNulty plays Luis Buñuel in the film. Javier Beltrán as Federico García Lorca, Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dali in Little Ashes According to reports, forensic experts have begun digging at a mass unmarked grave in search of the remains of poet and playwright Federico García Lorca (right), executed in the early days of Spain’s bloody 1936-39 civil war. The work is taking place on a remote hillside area near Granada, in Spain’s southern province of Andalusia. The assassins were members of a militia loyal to right-wing Gen. Francisco Franco. Approximately 500,000 people were killed during the civil war, which erupted after Franco, abetted by Spain’s business establishment and the Catholic Church, rebelled against the elected leftist Republican government. For a film about renowned artists, Little Ashes lacks style and imagination, a cumbersome clutter of poorly constructed scenes and amateurish acting.
A bland tale of Salvador Dali’s relationship with Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltrán) attempts to explore a speculative sexual experimentation during the 20’s, a time for revolution and visionaries. Their lavish, homoerotic exploits are meant to shed the era’s repressed nature, but are told with little passion or conviction in a wholly pedestrian plot. The film is simply a paradox of stock storytelling for extraordinary figures.
The presence of Robert Pattinson from Twilight fame only gathers a wider audience for an undeserving work, and the portrait of a tortured artist will only be a torturous affair for his young fans. Pattinson barely transforms from his vampiric role as a brooding romantic into a brooding painter, forcing a delivery in a fleeting accent and overreacting to his cohorts.

Not that the Twilight brigade will care -- because, Omg, Robert Pattinson is almost like totally naked here! -- but only indiscriminate vampire-swooning tweens will appreciate his portrayal of the surrealistic Spanish painter and filmmaker Salvador Dalí. For Pattinson’s interpretation of the man comes down to two hours of stultifying wide-eyed stares and mooning declarations such as “I’m Salvador Dalí, the savior of modern art” that play more as unintentional parody than as any attempt to understand a man whom -- Philippa Goslett’s script would like us to believe -- was a conflicted dreamer who was able to let loose in his art in a way he never was able to do in his own life. Director Paul Morrison (Solomon and Gaenor) makes some odd choices regarding what language we’re hearing this story in -- these native Spaniards speak English, except when Dalí’s onetime friend...

Robert Pattinson in "Little Ashes"

Some months before he began filming "Twilight," the movie that would ignite his career, Robert Pattinson shot a low-budget art-house film in Spain called "Little Ashes." "Twilight" was released last November; now comes the earlier picture. We can only imagine how Pattinson must feel about this.
The movie, directed by Paul Morrison, has an interesting subject: the 1922 meeting of three soon-to-be-renowned Spanish artists — filmmaker Luis Buñuel, painter Salvador Dalí and the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca — at the Residencia de Estudiantes, a Madrid arts institute. García Lorca is played by the Spanish TV actor Javier Beltrán, who somewhat resembles the young writer. Buñuel is portrayed by an Englishman, Matthew McNulty ("Control"), who looks nothing at all like the great director. And Pattinson has been cast, disastrously, as Dalí.
Actually, it's hard to imagine who could...

An earnest gay biopic that teeters on the edge of preciousness before plunging headlong into the drink, Little Ashes does have an audience out there, I'm sure. I just know that I'm not in it, nor are most of the people who will be checking it out for its much-hyped casting of Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson as a gay-experimenting Salvador Dalí.
While with a healthier budget, tighter script and steadier directorial hand, Ashes may have been the next Brideshead Revisited or Before Night Falls, it lands more in the neighborhood of Savage Grace.
At its core, Ashes is the story of gay Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, a contemporary of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí who mined his Andalusian gypsy heritage and status as an outsider to become one of the most celebrated poets of his time.

What was supposed to be a working holiday in Spain gave actor Robert Pattinson such severe anxiety, he feared he wouldn't work again. "I was kind of crossing lines of what I thought I was comfortable doing. I had to do all this naked stuff," the actor tells GQ magazine of his work in Little Ashes, where Rpattz plays a young Salvador Dali. The film follows the love affair between Pattinson's Dali and poet Federico García Lorca, played by Javier Beltrán. "And here I am, with Javier, who plays Lorca, doing an extremely hard-core sex scene, where I have a nervous breakdown afterward,".

Twilight star Robert Pattinson can't always play a vampire heartthrob. The two meet at university, with Lorca attracted to what the movie's production notes call Dalí's "bizarre blend of shyness and rampant exhibitionism." Hey, beats a bite in the neck. The trailer for Little Ashes is online, and it's a treat both for fans of Spanish art / Civil War history and fans of Robert Pattinson (which people are, judging from the screams at last night's Twilight premiere, are the loudest people in the world). This is the film in which Pattinson plays Salvador Dalí, enfant terrible of the art world and all-round mentalist. As a student in 1920s Madrid, he became friends with filmmaker Luis Buñuel (Matthew McNulty) and genius Spanish poet Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltran). Lorca, goes the film's story, was passionately in love with Dalí, who unfortunately wasn't quite as freeform about his sexuality as he was about his painting. And to make things worse, the Spanish Civil War was about to put a spike in all their bohemian cultural ambitions. The film comes out in cinemas next year - expect the queues of teenage girls to run around the block.

The Paul Morrison directed film also stars Javier Beltran, Matthew McNulty and Marina Gatell. The film is set in the midst of the repression and political unrest of pre-Spanish Civil War, and follows the life of eccentric artist Salvador Dalí and renowned poet and revolutionary Federico García Lorca as they find their artistic and sexual freedom. The two form a bond challenged by their fierce ambitions, their friends, the struggle between a love for Spain and a love for each other. Little Ashes will open in 2009, but a more definite release has not yet been set.

Paul Morrison helms from the writing by Philippa Goslett. The drama sees release March 27th next year and is rated R for sexual content, language and a brief disturbing image. This just in: The ladies love Robert Pattinson.
And for those of you on Team Edward, you might be interested to see what the Twilight star looks like with a handlebar moustache. I mean, isn't that the obvious next step? You'll get your wish in Little Ashes, in which the palest heartthrob around plays a young Salvador Dali opposite Javier Beltran's Francisco Garcia Lorca as the young artistes find their sexual and creative freedoms/passions.
That's right, I said Robert Pattinson and "sexual" in the same paragraph. So enjoy that.

Can't get enough of "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson? If that's a no, make sure to check out the trailer for Paul Morrison's "Little Ashes" right after the jump.
Written by Philippa Goslett, the film focuses on the decadent lifestyle of the young trio of Salvador Dali, Federico Garcia Lorca and Luis Bunuel.
Pattinson is on board as Dali, while Javier Beltran plays Lorca. Matthew McNulty stars as Bunuel. As for Morrison, you may or may not have seen his last film, "Wondrous Oblivion."
To be honest, I don't know what exactly to think of "Little Ashes," now that I've seen the trailer. The story is certainly an interesting one, but as you can see below, the movie looks kind of cheap.
Word is the film will open in limited release in March 2009. Check out the trailer below, and feel free to share what you think.

Little Ashes is a biopic of sorts that follows artist Salvador Dalí, played by Twilight star Robert Pattinson, filmmaker Luis Buñuel, played by Matthew McNulty, and writer Federico García Lorca, played by Javier Beltran, in Spain during the 1920s. As much as I was curious to see a film about the life of one of my favorite artists, this doesn't look that good. It looks like it was shot well, on location in Spain, but that doesn't make a great film in the end. I'll still hold my breath and hope for the best, but unfortunately I'm not impressed. Though I know Twilight fans will still swoon over Pattinson all day long. tMF Fast Forward: Paul Morrison's Little Ashes - tMF takes a closer look (Part 1 of a 4 part series)
Robert Pattinson was as friendly, approachable and fun to be around in our downtime as he was a true professional while on set, and his commitment to becoming Salvador Dali' was extremely impressive - and paid off in generating a performance which I personally think is extraordinary. We did completely confuse Javier Beltran's mother when she stumbled across our shoot and failed to recognize her own son dressed as Garcia Lorca... - - - - - - The above quote is from Little Ashes executive producer Carlo Dusi. With the huge success of Twilight, one of the movie’s major actors; Robert Pattinson is generally regarded as the film’s major attraction. However, while Pattinson portrays the controversial artist Salvador Dalí, it was acclaimed Spanish actor Javier Beltrán who is regarded as the film’s leading actor. Beltrán plays the writer and poet, Federico García Lorca. Another talented young actor from the UK,...

Javier Beltran (left) and Robert Pattinson in Little Ashes
Stars such as Will Smith and Jake Gyllenhaal have played gay on their way to international superstardom, but Robert Pattinson, currently best known as Cedric from the Harry Potter movies, has the order reversed. This Friday, he opens in Twilight, the eagerly-awaited adaptation of the first book in the bestselling teen vampire series, and it's widely expected to make him a star.
But come winter (in the U.K.) and spring (in the U.S.), we'll see him starring as Salvador Dali in Little Ashes, a small British movie about the passionate friendship/"bromance"/love affair between the famous "straight" painter and his gay playwright friend Federico García Lorca.

As I impatiently wait for Robert Pattinson’s performance as Edward in ‘Twilight’ to debut on November 21st, I thought I would look further ahead to one of his next movies called ‘Little Ashes.’ I mentioned this movie in my blog about Rob, Death By Pattinson!, but I have since come to discover that there is a campaign to get Regent Releasing’s ‘Little Ashes’ a screening here in Los Angeles. I, for one, would love to see this movie and write a review for you here as I think it will be a real test of Rob’s acting ability as he is playing a young Salvador Dali. In college, I did take an art appreciation class, so I do know of Dali’s most famous surrealist painting The Persistence of Memory with the melting clocks. But ‘Little Ashes’ takes place before this work was painted. According to the...
