With over 20 years in the digital media industry Derek has worked on projects with companies like Disney, Nickelodeon, TLC, plus many independent projects.
Derek has directed and edited many commercials, music videos and short films, including directing a feature-length urban comedy called Out On Parole, editing a coming-of-age film called Gutter King and most recently producing and directing documentary films, including: Within Reach a film about sustainable community and One Simple Question, a film about a sailing journey to find an iceberg.
In 2011, Derek was the director for an animated TED video called "Lessons from a Tree" that won Best Animated Commercial at the 2011 Telly Awards and featured Jeremy Irons as the voice of the tree. After producing a virtual reality tour of the US national parks and sharing it on the festival circuit fell in love with virtual reality and has been producing immersive media projects sharing nature with a whole new generation with his organization, WildEyes.
Since 2016, Derek has been partnering to create engaging immersive experiences with North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Unscripted Hotels, and NCState. In 2020, Derek joined forces with Unique Places to Save as creative director of the NatureXR program focused on using cutting-edge immersive technology to visualize ecological data and was awarded an EPIC Megagrant to create a fully immersive longleaf pine experience.
