When you’re up there making something and giving, with the people up there listening and receiving, it creates this circular motion of energy. And that’s what you try to do as an artist, create a timeless moment.”

February 4 was a big night for Taylor Swift, as she took home her fourth Album of the Year Grammy for “Midnights,” an achievement no other performer has ever managed. The Grammys handing out a fourth Album of the Year trophy to anyone is a big deal. But, strangely enough, Swift’s path to victory this time was arguably smoother than all of her previous wins.
Swift was aided by a couple of factors. The first and perhaps most obvious was that 2023 was simply the year of Taylor Swift. “Midnights” was a huge success commercially, achieving over 1.5 million album units in its first week, her biggest week ever at the time and a remarkable achievement for anyone’s 10th studio album. She followed that with the iconic Eras Tour, which is already the highest grossing tour of all time despite not being over yet. Additionally, the album produced multiple hit singles,...

The Writers Guild of America went on strike on May 2, and work on all television and film projects was stopped immediately by guild members. Production was able to continue on some projects that already had completed scripts, but since the nature of late-night talk shows requires timely jokes, they have all been off the air for exactly five months.
But, thanks to last week’s deal between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), all of the late-night shows will return to the air on Monday, Oct. 2 with brand new episodes. As The Streamable noted last week, because these types of shows are generally day-to-day operations, they are able to get back to airing new episodes almost immediately.
That being said, the shows will still have to contend with the fact that they will not be able to have actors on as guests in order...

After 22 weeks without late night, the biggest hosts on television have returned. Late night shows are back following the conclusion of the WGA strike.
After the announcement on Tuesday night that writers were allowed to return to work, HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” became the first late night show to return Friday with guest Ron DeSantis. But Maher isn’t the only one jumping back on the air with a splashy big name. From Neil deGrasse Tyson to Matthew McConaughey, the kings of the 11:35 p.m. and 12:35 p.m. blocks aren’t holding back when it comes to their returns.
Below is the most complete list so far of guests expected to appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Real Time with Bill Maher” in the week to come.

Over the course of four years and three albums, Atlanta singer-songwriter Summer Walker has developed an incredible talent for detailing the messy epiphanies of Black romance. The 27-year-old artist writes like a student of the late Betty Wright, Mary J. Blige, and K. Michelle, women who describe love with as much vigor as they do the fights and misunderstandings that tear two people apart. It came as a surprise, then, that Walker announced on one of her social media accounts prior to the release of her Clear 2: Soft Life,...

There's something particularly profound about Mary J. Blige holding her Strength of a Woman festival in the heart of Black culture's mecca. This year, the queen of hip-hop soul returned to Atlanta from May 11-14 for her second annual "by us for us" event - an uplifting, fulfilling, and fun-filled experience that catered to every woman in attendance. And boy, did they have a time.
The best way to describe the Strength of a Woman festival is like a warm hug from your family matriarch, welcoming you with open arms for the most captivating weekend of your life. While there have been some comparisons from onlookers who see the festival as a mini Essence Fest, Blige's second iteration of her brainchild - in partnership with Pepsi and Live Nation Urban - is building its own unique identity. In addition to your traditional concert series, festivalgoers were also treated to an...

R&b is one of the biggest genres not only in music consumption but in the awards conversation. Artists like Beyoncé, Silk Sonic, Jazmine Sullivan, Jon Batiste, and H.E.R. have made a lot of noise due to their success at the Grammys, and it’s likely that one or two breakouts from this year will join their ranks. Let’s take a look at some buzzing names in R&b contention this year.
SEEBillboard Hot 100: Every #1 song of 2023
If you’re talking about R&b in 2023, you have to talk about Sza. The singer-songwriter has had a great year with the success of her sophomore album, “Sos.” It’s indisputably the frontrunner for Best Progressive R&b Album. There is, perhaps, a chance that the record could be moved to the pop field because it juggles many genres at once, but let’s assume it’s in R&b for now.

Dinner Party — the jazz/hip-hop supergroup composed of Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington, and 9th Wonder — brought the whole family to Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a performance of their single “Insane” with guest vocalist Ant Clemons.
Following an introduction by the host that misidentified the track as coming from their “self-titled EP” rather than their new sophomore LP, Enigmatic Society, the scene opened to the quartet and Clemons huddled on couches for a casual, impromptu hangout that was immediately inviting and effortlessly cool. The laidback and intimate setting perfectly fit the song’s vibey tone and lovelorn lyrics, while the band’s close proximity only added to the intense and intricate interplay between Glasper’s keys, Martin’s synth and vocoder acrobatics, Clemons’ vocals, and Washington’s saxophone flourishes. Watch the replay below.

Celebrated singer-songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello is back with a new song, “Virgo.” The single will appear on her first album of all new material in nearly a decade, The Omnichord Real Book, out June 16 via Blue Note.

Chris Brown has caused a couple’s relationship to rupture.
During one of the “Freaky Friday” singer’s recent concerts, a woman received a lap dance onstage from Brown, which left her boyfriend, whom she attended the show with, infuriated.
Following the concert, the angry boyfriend took to TikTok to share a video of the erotic dance, in which his girlfriend appears to be enjoying the performance as she ran her hands down Brown’s body. She even fanned herself with her hand.

Dinner Party — the jazz/hip-hop supergroup comprised of Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, and 9th Wonder — have shared “Insane,” a new song recorded with Ant Clemons. Listen to the single below.
“Insane” boosts a sampled drum loop from Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” with fuzzed out bass, layering Glasper’s famous piano and Clemons’ vocals on top of the 1983 track’s syncopated rhythms. The result is what Dinner Party does best, blending the soul of R&b with hip-hop production.
Dinner Party formed back in 2020, when the group released a self-titled album that they quickly refreshed with Dessert, a new version of the LP that featured Snoop Dogg, Herbie Hancock, Alex Isley, and more. One such song, “Freeze Tag,” was one of the best releases of the year.

Dee Barnes has said that the Grammys awarded an “abuser” when they named an accolade after Dr Dre.
Dr Dre was given the new award, titled the Dr Dre Impact Award, at the Grammys in Los Angeles on Sunday night (5 February).
Barnes has since claimed that the Recording Academy “named this award after an abuser,” given that Dre pleaded no contest to assault and battery against her in 1991. There have been several other claims of violence made against him by multiple women, which he has denied.
In her own words, Barnes told Rolling Stone about how the recent honouring of Dre made her feel, as well as the impact of his abuse.
“I’m not saying he is the same person now,” said Barnes. “I don’t know. I’m not around him anymore. I haven’t talked to him.”

Charlie Thomas, who is best known for his work in The Drifters, has died aged 85.
Thomas died on 31 January after suffering with liver cancer, his friend Peter Lemongello Jr told the New York Times.
"He was ageing, but he was active almost every weekend. Unfortunately, he went from being active to being at home and he started going downhill,” said Lemongello, confirming that the musician died at his residence in Bowie, Maryland.
Thomas was the lead singer for The Drifters on hits such as “There Goes My Baby”, “Under the Boardwalk” and “Sweets for my Sweet”.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 as a member of the band.
He also received a Pioneer Award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1999.
Thomas joined the band after playing with his previous group, The Five Crowns, in 1958 at the Apollo Theatre.

Chris Brown has apologised to Robert Glasper for his rant after losing to him at the Grammys.
Both musicians had been nominated for the Best R&b album award at the Sunday (5 February) night ceremony at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Other nominees included Mary J Blige with Good Morning Gorgeous, Lucky Daye with Candydrip and Pj Morton with Watch The Sun.
Glasper won for his album Black Radio III, but when the news was announced, Brown was not impressed.
Posting on his Instagram story on Sunday night, Brown posted a screenshot of the result, with the caption: “Yall Playing Who Da F*** Is This?"
"I’M Going To Keep Kicking A** Respectfully,” he wrote in another before posting “Bro Who The F*** Is Robert Glasper?"
Brown then continued to ridicule Glasper, posting “I gotta get my skills up…ima start playing the harmonica” before posting an image...

After throwing a temper tantrum, Chris Brown is backtracking on a series of comments he made following the 2023 Grammys.
The 33-year-old singer was up for an award in the best R&b album category and lost to pianist Robert Glasper, reports People magazine.
While other nominees in the category included Pj Morton, Mary J. Blige and Lucky Daye, Brown openly voiced his frustration after losing the award by verbally attacking Glasper in a series of posts shared to his Instagram Story.
After Glasper’s 2022 album Black Radio III took home the prize, he began expressing his feelings by writing on his story “Yall Playing Who Da F-k Is This?” against a screenshot where Glasper was announced as the winner.
People further states that in screenshots captured by The Shade Room, Brown continued: “I’m going to keep kicking a- respectfully” before writing in white letters against a plain black background.

The Grammys aren’t the Grammys without surprises, and this year definitely didn’t disappoint on that front. Here are five categories that shocked us all on Sunday night.
Song of the Year
Undoubtedly the biggest surprise at the Grammys was Bonnie Raitt taking home Song of the Year for “Just Like That.” Raitt is no stranger to a Grammy win, having racked up 13 competitive Grammys across her long career. However, while many expected her to lose this award to a more contemporary name — perhaps Adele or Harry Styles — Raitt probably monopolized the country and Americana vote, as well as being a likely rock-voter pick (she’s a past winner in that genre). With that in mind, and considering the older voters who likely love Raitt as well, her win isn’t inexplicable. And good for Raitt, who’s the first sole-lyricist winner of the award since Amy Winehouse (“Rehab...

After Chris Brown lost the award for Best R&b Album to critically acclaimed pianist Robert Glasper, the pop culture villain with a history of resorting to violence with women, complained on Instagram: “Y’all playing. Who da fuck is this?”

The 2023 Grammys were full of chaotic wins and energetic performances. The winners this year ranged from expected sweepers to head-scratching underdogs. But we learn a little more about the Grammys and their tendencies every year, despite how weird they might feel sometimes. Here are the four biggest takeaways from this year’s show.

Number of nominations doesn’t equal strength
It’s common to assume that an artist’s strength might be reflected in the total number of nominations they got. However, many winners proved this wrong. For example, Robert Glasper’s “Black Radio III” got two nominations but was able to beat the six-time nominated “Good Morning Gorgeous” by Mary J. Blige for Best R&b Album. Similarly, “Til You Can’t” by Cody Johnson won Best Country Song despite being snubbed everywhere else.
