Barry Keoghan is officially part of the “Peaky Blinders” gang.

Netflix revealed a first look at the “Saltburn” actor in the upcoming movie spinoff on social media on Friday. In the shot, he’s driving a truck while sporting a cap, leather jacket and a fresh cut on his face.

Despite the image of Keoghan, not much else is known about his character or what role he’ll play in the film.

Keoghan joins his fellow Irishman Cillian Murphy, who is returning as Tommy Shelby, in the movie. Other stars from the series reprising their roles include Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee and Ian Peck. Alongside Keoghan, another newcomer to the franchise is Jay Lycurgo, whose role is also undisclosed.

The Peaky Blinders movie continues to build buzz and here’s a first look of Saltburn star Barry Keoghan, who joins the cast for the feature.

Keoghan, who can be seen above looking very ‘peaky’ as he gazes out a truck window, is one of a host of new names for the upcoming movie, which rolled cameras in September. He has broken out in the past couple of years with a string of big roles including Saltburn, Masters of the Air and Top Boy. He was Oscar-nominated for Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin.

Keoghan joins the likes of Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson as new to Steven Knight’s franchise. Rejoining the cast are the likes of Cillian Murphy, Stephen Graham and Sophie Rundle, who played Ada, sister to Oscar-winner Murphy’s Birmingham clan leader Tommy Shelby. In the series finale, Tommy handed the reins of the family business to Ada.

The image, released Friday, shows the Oscar nominee leaning outside of a car window — and yes, he’s donning the trademark Peaky Blinders newsboy cap, so we can safely assume he’s part of Tommy Shelby’s (Cillian Murphy) gang. Keoghan joined the project in August. No details about his character have been released.

In September, Keoghan told Entertainment Weekly that he was “excited and nervous” to be part of “Peaky Blinders” and is a “massive, massive fan” of the show. “I can’t wait for that,” he said. “Cillian’s a good friend and I f—ing admire him as an actor as well.”

Last week, production commenced on the film, which will be an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning gangster saga, set in the lawless streets of Birmingham in the 1900s.

The upcoming “Peaky Blinders” movie has revealed more original series stars who are returning for the crime drama’s next chapter.

Stephen Graham; Sophie Rundle; Ned Dennehy; Packy Lee (“Blue Lights”); and Ian Peck are all set to reprise their roles alongside Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby. Jay Lycurgo has also joined the film in an undisclosed role.

In the final season of the original series, Graham portrays Hayden Stagg, the union leader for the Liverpool dock workers. Rundle was a mainstay throughout all six seasons as Tommy Shelby’s sister Ada, as was Dennehy as Charlie Strong, a sort of uncle to the Shelby siblings. Lee plays Johnny Dogs, a friend of Tommy’s, while Ian Peck is Curly, Charlie’s assistant.

For me, 2020 was already a rather stressful year before the Covid lockdowns went into effect for reasons unrelated to the pandemic. Even as misfortunes both personal and professional piled up throughout the months that followed, the virus, funnily enough, was never directly to blame for my woes. Crime dramas can sit on a pretty broad spectrum: some are campy, cosy and even comfortingly formulaic, whereas others make you need to sleep with the light on. After the Flood comes from BAFTA-nominated writer-actor Mick Ford and stars Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) as PC Joanna Marshall. Following a devastating flood, she finds an unidentified man dead in a lift in an underground car park and, while police assume he became trapped as the waters rose, she becomes obsessed with discovering what happened to him.

A lesser show would make us wait for answers, but this is Happy Valley and satisfaction is guaranteed. This episode picks up from where the last left off: in a cafe in Sheffield where Catherine has just confronted Clare (Siobhan Finneran) about secretly taking Ryan (Rhys Connah) to see his good-for-nothing father Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) in prison.

Steven Knight's "Peaky Blinders" is a compelling story about a street gang in Birmingham. It's a gangster drama, so naturally, there's blood, smoke, and fire. There are outbursts of extreme violence when rival gangs are up against each other; there's tragedy, hope, and ambition, among different themes. At times, "Peaky Blinders" can also be a dark show to watch, but none will deny it has a solid aesthetic. Perhaps that is because of the Shelby family's well-tailored, expensive-looking tweed suits, the portrayal of its characters, or the depiction of Birmingham in post-war Britain — or perhaps it is all of it.

The show is rooted in gangster mythology, and when combined with its classic stylized aesthetic, it feels like a period drama and yet very contemporary. It's bold and confident, much like its characters. The music and visuals go hand in hand, and Knight's flawless writing truly makes "Peaky Blinders" one of a kind.

It might be easy to think that "Peaky Blinders" is a rip-roaring gangster story, exploring the rise (and likely fall) of Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby as leader of the most fearsome collection of petty thieves and bloodthirsty criminals in early 1900s Birmingham. It certainly is that, to be sure, but that description doesn't quite manage to do justice to the collection of fascinating characters caught up in the wake of Tommy's ceaseless ambitions to grow his organization from the mud-soaked grime of horse racing to the upper echelons of political influence in Parliament. No, it'd probably be more accurate to call this popular (and recently concluded) show a family drama.

Fans of Gentleman Jack were left in shock earlier this month when HBO opted to cancel the drama after two seasons.

The series, which was a co-production between HBO and the BBC, came to a grinding halt after HBO pulled the plug.

Series creator, Sally Wainwright is hopeful the show could return in some capacity down the line.

In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Wainwright said that "there is a desire to go on with it amongst quite a lot of people."

The main hurdle standing in the way of a pickup is that an international partner would have to be found to carry the series globally.

Wainwright promises that “all those other options are being explored.”

Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright is not giving up on a third season for the lesbian period drama series following its cancellation last week by HBO.

Wainwright told RadioTimes.com in an interview that HBO’s decision not to move forward with a third season was a surprise, noting however that BBC, the show’s co-producer, “certainly [is] up for” continuing with the show” but would need another streaming partner. The BBC has said that it was “in discussions” with Wainwright about “what’s next”.

“I think if HBO had been up for it, there’d have been no question, Wainwright added. “It’s been a very successful show in all areas for them – it’s had fantastic reviews, it’s had a very respectable audience and on top of that it’s had an impact on the community of gay women. We have the most extraordinary fanbase.”
