- In 2008, he became the only emerging screenwriter to make the American Zoetrope Top 10 twice, when his screenplay A Tin of Paint was selected by a judging panel headed by Francis Ford Coppola.
- In 2007, he became the first African screenwriter to make the Top 10 at Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope Screenplay Contest, when a judging panel headed by director Gus Van Sant selected his first feature screenplay The Last Marine, an Alaska-set modern-day Western.
- His first script, a Law and Order spec episode, saw him named the only non-US semi-finalist in the TV Drama category at the 2006 Austin Film and TV Festival.
- In 2007, became the then highest-placed South African in the history of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' prestigious Nicholl Fellowship, named a semi-finalist for A Tin Of Paint (then again in 2009 for his Congo genocide screenplay, In The Garden Of the King).
- Of 17 screenplays written since 2006, all are optioned, attached or sold to various Hollywood, South African or UK production companies.
- In March 2016, Paul won the Writers Guild Of South Africa's prestigious WGSA Muse Award for Outstanding Achievement In TV Drama Screenwriting for JAB, the popular SABC 1 boxing drama series he co-created with producer Lucilla Blankenberg (for which he wrote all 13 episodes).
- Paul was one of the designated African consultants for the historic Story Lab initiative by Triggerfish Animation Studios ("the Pixar of Africa") with the support of Disney and the South African Department of Trade & Industry.
- At 14, Paul's son, Jamie Dylan Johnson is one of the youngest South Africans to conclude a script deal, for his original serial killer short script, _Sinner (2016)_ Paul was subsequently brought in to adapt it as an R-rated production.
