Peacock has shared the first look at its new upcoming comedy series “Killing It,” streaming this April.
Created by “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” producers Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, “Killing It” stars Craig Robinson as Craig, a man who competes in a state-sponsored python hunt in his quest to achieve the American Dream. The series co-stars Stephanie Nogueras as Craig’s ex-wife Camille, Jet Miller as his pre-teen daughter Vanessa and Rell Battle as his younger brother Isaiah. Claudia O’Doherty, Scott Macarthur and Wyatt Walter round out the cast.
“We love all the ambitious, challenging, thematically-rich series that populate the current peak-tv landscape,” said Goor in a statement. “We also love jokes. So, we tried to make a show that could deliver both. We wanted ‘Killing It’ to explore America’s quasi-religious obsession with entrepreneurship and wealth, and we also wanted it to be funny. Really, really funny. Plus, we wanted it to have big snakes.

Beginning with a shot of a chalk-drawn Black Lives Matter sign being washed away by its eponymous busybody and somehow getting less subtle from there, “Karen” lives up — or down, rather — to the expectations set by its infamous trailer, which went viral for all the wrong reasons earlier this summer. From the title (which in recent years has become a pejorative term for entitled white women) to nearly every narrative beat, writer-director Coke Daniels’ satirical thriller offers little in the way of incisive social commentary or thrills.
“She seems nice,” Imani (Jasmine Burke) says to her husband Malik (Cory Hardrict) upon first seeing their new neighbor. She’s proven wrong moments later, when Karen (Taryn Manning) installs a new security camera pointed directly at their home and half-jokingly accuses Malik of casing her house. As the first Black residents of an upscale neighborhood in suburban Atlanta, they weren’t necessarily...

A genuine jaw-dropper on multiple levels, Coke Daniels’ “Karen” is a misbegotten thriller about a woman named Karen who actually is a Karen, as defined culturally by her entitlement and racism. Adding to the oddly literal vibe is the fact that she’s played by Taryn Manning, an actress who has weathered accusations of Karen-ism in real life. But perhaps we should just allow the movie’s dialogue to speak for itself:
“We have a white entitled neighbor named Karen? Oh my goodness, this sounds like something straight out of ‘SNL.'”
“No, it’s more like ‘Black Mirror.'”
Indeed, viewers will be continually pulled between disbelieving laughter and stupefied confusion, making this by far the most trenchant exchange in the whole film.
When our heroes Imani and Malik move into their new suburban Atlanta home, Malik muses, “Who would have thought, us living in a white neighborhood?” This is actually a reasonable sentiment,...

Exclusive: Umc, the AMC Networks streaming service with a focus on Black film and TV, has renewed four of its original series including the top-rated Craig Ross Jr.’s Monogamy and A House Divided, which will both return for their third seasons.

Mississippi Damned is a rare, exceptional film, one that covers enormous amounts of emotional territory and manages to impart sadness and hope in equal measures.
Written and directed by Tina Mabry, who penned the hilarious Itty Bitty Titty Committee, the movie dives deep into the heart of the American south, with an unflinching eye towards racism and poverty. Based on true events, the drama is achingly, refreshingly real.
The film kicks off in 1986, and centers on the lives of two African American families and their closest friends, barely scraping by in a rural Mississippi town.
Our protagonist, Kari (played as a young girl by Kylee Russell and later by Tessa Thompson), who acts as our eyes and ears throughout the film.
She has a lesbian sister, Leigh (Chasity Kershal Hammitte), and a cousin Sammy (Malcolm David Kelley), who is a young basketball star.
Their parents and close friends are all struggling — with money,...
