Backed by the star power of its veteran A-list stars, Brad Pitt and George Clooney, the Jon Watts-directed film from Apple and Sony had a triumphant world premiere at the Venice Film Festival late Sunday night on the Lido. Expectedly, the crush of fans and media situated outside Palazzo del Cinema went wild for the pair as they arrived on the scene ahead of the screening. And once the final frames hit the screen and the credits rolled, Wolfs received a nearly five-minute standing ovation. Pitt and Clooney seemed to be soaking up the attention, with Pitt singing along to Sade and Clooney offering a “Grazie” to close it out.

Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist was the talk of the Lido on Sunday as the seven-years-in-the-making period epic finally received its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival’s historic Sala Grande cinema.

The audience inside the premiere erupted in applause as the credits began to roll on the film’s epic three-hour, 35-minute running time, giving Corbet and his cast a rousing, festival-best 13-minute standing ovation. Stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones looked teary at times by the effusive reaction to the movie.

The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a rave review, with chief critic David Rooney describing The Brutalist as “a monumental symphony of the immigrant experience” with a “devastating” performance by Brody as Tóth.

On Wednesday, The New York Times op-ed section published a blunt essay from George Clooney, in which the actor and director, one of Hollywood’s more engaged political players, forcefully argues for President Joe Biden to step aside in his campaign for reelection and allow a new candidate to take on Donald Trump in November.

Andrea Arnold‘s anticipated new film Bird touched down at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday for an afternoon world premiere at the Grand Lumiere Theatre. And it got a warm reception, including a seven-minute standing ovation.

The competition title stars Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski, Nykiya Adams and Jason Buda star in the film which follows a 12-year-old (Adams) who lives with her brother (Buda) and single dad (Keoghan) in a squat in North Kent. The prestigious Cannes Film Festival witnesses several features each year, but only a handful of them manage to create an impression and earn a standing ovation worthwhile of talking. While the debate about whether the length of standing ovations at the festival is directly proportionate to its quality or not is an ongoing debate, the length is nonetheless a part of popular tradition and to some degree provides a measurement of the film’s future success.

The Hollywood Reporter has landed 44 nominations for the 66th annual SoCal Journalism Awards, including print journalist of the year for Rebecca Keegan and best website.

Other nominations were bestowed upon THR’s Songwriter Roundtable, podcasts Awards Chatter and It Happened in Hollywood, and the Live Feed and Heat Vision blogs, in addition to THR’s original photography, videos, criticism and social media posts.

The awards are handed out by the Los Angeles Press Club, which noted that more than 2,300 entries were submitted this year. The winners will be announced at an awards dinner gala June 23 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Anyone who tuned into CBS hoping to see Ghosts this evening was certainly disappointed. And while TV viewers might’ve wondered why they got so much love, those in the audience at the 2024 Oscars might argue the shine was due to a classic case of reverse psychology.

At precisely 4 p.m. inside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, David Alan Grier took to the stage with a microphone in hand to make pre-show announcements. “Good evening and welcome ladies and gentlemen to the 96th Academy Awards,” said the veteran star with a clock ticking over his shoulder on the big-screen with less than three minutes and 40 seconds before showtime. “Y’all are going to be hearing from me for the rest of the night, but for the next minute, enjoy seeing me. Feast your eyes upon my body. I’m a real zaddy.”

The 2024 Oscars returned to the Dolby Theatre on Sunday for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. The awards ceremony began with an emotional win for Da’Vine Joy Randolph and ended with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer taking home the top prize, as well as six other awards. But there was plenty going on off-camera as well. From Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence hugging backstage to how John Cena went from practically naked to donning a toga, here are some of the things the cameras missed during the 96th annual Academy Awards.

Snack Boxes for All

As per usual, Jimmy Kimmel brought his A-game to his Oscar-hosting gig — and some snacks. This year, the late night host provided snack boxes that included Shappy Pretzels and mustard, Mike & Ike’s, water and a note from the host that, “to keep the karma flowing,” they would be providing a donation to St. Joseph Center.

Arguably the biggest surprise at the 2024 Oscars occurred when Poor Things‘ Emma Stone won best actress over Killers of the Flower Moon‘s Lily Gladstone. While both delivered lauded performances and had won precursor awards during a close race this season, Gladstone was many high-profile Oscar pundits’ pick for most likely to win, having notably taken the SAG Award for best actress. However, Stone did win the BAFTA award for best actress; Gladstone wasn’t nominated.

Still, Gladstone is far from the first actor to lose the Oscar despite winning the SAG Award, a list that includes Denzel Washington (Fences), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) and Viola Davis twice (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Help).

John Cena may have not run across the 2024 Oscars stage nude Sunday, but he certainly did awkwardly walk to present the award for best costume design.

Jimmy Kimmel initially kicked off the bit by asking, “Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today? Wouldn’t that be crazy?” The host was referencing when Robert Opel infamously streaked during the 46th Academy Awards in 1974.

Cena proceeded to pop his head out from backstage to inform Kimmel, “I changed my mind. I don’t want to do the streaker bit anymore. … You should feel ashamed right now for suggesting such a tasteless idea.”

“It’s supposed to be funny,” Kimmel responded before Cena quipped, “The male body is not a joke.” But the host added, “Mine is.”

U2 wrapped the inaugural residency at Las Vegas’ $2.3 billion technical and visual marvel Sphere this weekend, closing out a 40-show run that started in September. Fittingly, the legendary band did so by bringing things full circle.

The shows commemorated one of U2’s most successful records, the chart-topping 1991 release Achtung Baby, played in its entirety with selected tracks from other U2 efforts over the years. To further honor the album, U2 bandmates Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Bram van den Berg (sitting in during the residency for an ailing Larry Mullen Jr.) welcomed Achtung Baby producer Daniel Lanois to the stage Saturday night to play guitar and sing backup on the track “One.”

“There would be no Achtung Baby without Daniel Lanois,” Bono said in welcoming him up the back stairs with a request to the audience. “Show him your light,” and they did by holding up smartphone flashbulbs in a beautiful scene.

People protesting the Israel-Hamas war outside the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards could be heard inside throughout the ceremony on Sunday afternoon.

A handful of protesters were outside the tent located on the beach in Santa Monica playing previously recorded chants on a megaphone such as “free Palestine,” “long live Palestine” and “ceasefire now.” The chants continued as awards were presented inside and were also heard during the red carpet arrivals earlier in the day.

Chants could be heard from outside the venue on Sunday afternoon (February 25) at the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, Calif.

While Jim Gaffigan was on stage to present the award for Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series to the cast of Jury Duty, screams could be heard and they were so loud it seemed like they were possibly inside the room.

The rapper, 48, said he was “overwhelmed” after winning three awards during the pre-Grammys telecast, including trophies for best rap song, performance and album. Killer Mike, whose real name is Michael Santiago Render, then encouraged viewers to keep their dreams alive.

Updated, 10:44 Pm: The 66th Grammys are over, Jay-Z threw down, Taylor Swift made more history, Joni Mitchell and Celine Dion showed a rainy Los Angeles that Canadians know how to bring the heat, and triple Grammy winner Killer Mike is out of LAPD custody after being booked on a misdemeanor battery charge.

About five hours after he was publicly detained and arrested by Los Angeles police Sunday just after he won three Grammys in the pre-show earlier in the afternoon, the activist-entrepreneur-rapper has been released.

The suspect has been identified as 48-year-old Michael Render and booked for Misdemeanor Battery 243(A) PC, and is in the process of being released.

The battery charge comes with either a potential fine up to $2,000, six months behind bars or both, under California’s penal code.

Rapper Killer Mike was detained at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, less than an hour before the 2024 Grammys were set to begin.

Earlier Sunday afternoon, the rapper won big in the rap category during the premiere ceremony, scoring the awards for best rap song and best rap performance for “Scientists & Engineers,” and best rap album for Michael.

An arena security official initially told The Hollywood Reporter that Killer Mike was detained for a reason (unknown at this point) that had nothing to do with Grammy Awards.

“At around 4 p.m., an individual was detained at [Crypto.com Arena] for a physical altercation,” a LAPD spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “The individual is currently being questioned. I cannot confirm the identity of the individual until the person is charged. The investigation is ongoing.”

The rapper was seen in handcuffs being taken into a security room inside the L.A. arena, near the VIP entrance.

An LAPD source tells Rolling Stone that Michael Santiago Render (Killer Mike’s real name) was handcuffed and detained after an alleged “physical altercation” inside the arena involving a third party. “Somebody complains, obviously we have to do something about it,” the source said. Render was questioned and later booked for misdemeanor battery, according to the LAPD.
