- Father of poet, actor, and broadcaster Patrick Kavanagh (aka P.J. Kavanagh).
- British radio writer best-remembered for writing the popular BBC comedy series "It's That Man Again" ("ITMA"), starring comedian Tommy Handley. The show ran from 1939 to 1949, the year of Handley's death.
- Born in New Zealand (of Irish descent), Kavanagh came to England in 1914 to study medicine. As a medical student based in Britain, he served with New Zealand's army during World War I (1916-1918). Deciding to pursue a career in writing, Kavanagh first worked as a London correspondent for New Zealand newspapers.
