British film editor Matthew Newman began his career as a production assistant on the film Gangs of New York where he was mentored by Director of Photography, Michael Ballhaus.
After working as an editor primarily for commercials, a chance encounter with Danish Director Nicolas Winding Refn led Newman to cut his first film project, Bronson, starring Tom Hardy. Newman reunited with Refn on the epic warrior feature film Valhalla Rising starring Mads Mikkelsen. After he moved to Los Angeles, Newman began work on three Refn movies: the 2011 romantic action drama Drive starring Ryan Gosling, 2013's Only God Forgives and 2016's The Neon Demon. All three films competed at Cannes in successive years, while Drive garnered Newman his first BAFTA nomination.
Newman also cut Director Stefano Sollima's 2018 Sony action feature film Sicario: Day of the Soldado, starring Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin. He then edited 2019's Too Old To Die Young, Refn's epic pulp crime series for Amazon Studios starring Miles Teller.
Alongside movies, Newman has cut many international commercials; including Lincoln's spots with Matthew McConaughey, as well as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Hugo Boss' campaigns with Director Darren Aronofsky.
Newman divides his time between Berlin and Los Angeles. His recent projects include 2021's Without Remorse for Sollima and Paramount Pictures.
