The subculture of Selena Quintanilla Pérez super-fandom, or Selenidad, was born out of grief. After the Queen of Tejano music was murdered on March 31st, 1995 — shot once in the back by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar — her Mexican American fans mourned her. For some it was like a close relative had been assassinated and an untouchable, living religious diva was extinguished before she could perform her miracles.

Selena Quintanilla Perez is a name etched in pop culture history, known to many as the subject of the 1997 biopic starring Jennifer Lopez as much as she is known to several generations of Latinx girls. Her tragic death — murdered at the age of 23 — enhances this mythos, a fact often enhanced by what both the “Selena” feature and Netflix’s new series situate as a “we should have seen it coming” undercurrent. “Selena: The Series” no doubt will inspire a new generation of Selena fans, but the story it tells over its first nine episode is one that feels highly sanitized, controlled and, ultimately, upsetting.
“Selena: The Series” certainly knows what it wants to say — that it’s leading lady was a good girl, a brilliant singer, and a woman on the cutting edge of the music scene who would have created a revolution if given the chance. Unfortunately, by putting...

It didn’t take long for the world for Selena Quintanilla to become a household, first-name only icon. During the first episode of Netflix’s “Selena: The Series,” about the titular Tejano music superstar, the patriarch of the family, Abraham Quintanilla Jr. (Ricardo Chavira), strums his guitar as his 8-year-old daughter Selena (Madison Taylor Baez) sings the popular 1970s song “Feelings” like any gifted little girl would.
“The notes are good, you’re just not…” her father says as he explains that to be a compelling singer, one must tap into their own life experiences. Her mother interjects that Selena is too young to understand what lyrics like “trying to forget my feelings of love” really mean.
Those genuine emotions needed to express what’s inside someone’s heart may not have existed in Selena as a kid, but during her fleeting 23 years of life — much of it spent performing center stage and beloved by countless fans —her music elicited a response that could only be described as deep adoration.

Popular-music-focused dramatizations have found new life, thanks to recent cinematic offerings like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, with many more currently on the industry docket. It’s a notion that Netflix might have taken into consideration with a television project it just unveiled, set to chronicle the story of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, the 1990s-era Mexican-American crossover pop sensation whose rise was tragically cut short upon being murdered by her friend and agent.
The Walking Dead‘s Christian Serratos temporarily put aside the zombie apocalypse to star on the Netflix television offering, titled Selena: The Series. The show is being released in “parts” (rather than seasons), with Part 1 arriving with six 1-hour episodes. Serratos – who’s played Rosita Espinoza on the AMC series since 2014 – has major shoes to fill, not just because of the loftiness of portraying the still-beloved singer, but also because of director Gregory Nava’s 1997 Selena film, which elevated star Jennifer Lopez to A-list status.

Netflix is giving us another look at Christian Serratos in character as Selena Quintanilla for its new show about the Tejano music legend, Selena: The Series. In the first, brief teaser for the series, we get a glimpse of The Walking Dead star dressed in '90s attire as she practices singing one of Quintanilla's biggest hits, "Como La Flor." She gradually makes her way through her Texas home, getting a ride to a stadium, and then finally belting out the track on a dark stage. While the latest teaser is short and sweet with a few clips of Serratos singing and dancing on stage, it does reveal the show's release date. All nine episodes will premiere on Dec. 4.

USA Network appears to be exiting the scripted market.
The latest casualties at the cable network are Treadstone and The Purge.
They are both spinoffs of wildly popular movie franchises, but neither set the ratings alight upon their launches.
Treadstone is ending after just one season.
The series explored the origin story and present-day actions of a fictional CIA black-ops program known as Operation Treadstone — a covert program that uses a behavior-modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly-superhuman assassins.
The series follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously 'awakened' to resume their deadly missions.
The program breaks down these assassins' personalities, erases their memories, and eliminates their moral code so they can effectively kill targets around the world. Treadstone's legacy was present and begins in an East Berlin incident that transpires in 1973.
This involves John Randolph Bentley (Jeremy Irvine), one of the program's agents, who escapes his Soviet captors.

While some cable networks strike gold with hit TV series, usually cable shows just don't draw the same sort of audience the big broadcast networks do. Although USA Network originally ordered the new TV show, The Purge, the thriller is also going to be rerun at times on its sister-station Syfy.
