2024 is nearly over and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

Alas, the end of 2024 is drawing closer, and another Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, waits in the wings of 2025.
This particular prequel is an exciting prospect for the keen and savvy book readers out there.
Given what we know of the books, Max’s latest outing (Max is on a roll heading into 2025) should easily develop into a multi-series story.
(Courtesy of Max/Teaser Screenshot)
There are three books in the Dunk and Egg series (the nicknames given to two of the story’s primary characters), and their story is set some hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones.
In fact, Dunk (short for Duncan) interacted with one of the characters every Game of Thrones viewer is familiar with.

The second season of House of the Dragon is over and we likely won't see season 3 until sometime in 2026. But we will get to revisit Westeros before that. Next year, HBO will debut a new Game of Thrones prequel series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is an altogether smaller story than we saw in either Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. There's no massive war afoot; there's just a very tall knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his diminuitive squire Egg, who wander the Seven Kingdoms having adventures. The first season will be based on Martin's story "The Hedge Knight," which begins with Dunk entering himself into a tournament in Ashford Meadow in the Reach. There he'll meet a variety of characters, including a member of...

From director Damian McCarthy (Caveat), Oddity tells the story of a female psychic attempting to get to the bottom of her twin sister’s murder by returning to the scene of the crime.
Oddity is all about its atmosphere. Thankfully the filmmakers have clearly put a lot of effort into creating this part of the movie, whether it be through camera work, sound design, the score, or the placement of jump scares. It all feels incredibly well thought out.
I’m sure many people viewing it will see it as one of the scariest films they have ever seen and that claim would be justified. It does an excellent job of building up two or three really good jump scares. And even knowing that doesn’t hinder the moments because you...

With Caveat, Damian McCarthy layered mystery upon mystery to create a haunting thriller about isolation. The Irish filmmaker’s latest, Oddity, follows a similarly twist-laden blueprint. The plot exudes a pulpy sense of escalation, defined by a collision of convoluted story threads that might, in lesser hands, have devolved into unintentional comedy.
After all, the central image of Oddity verges on the ludicrous: a horrible wooden mannequin planted at the head of a dinner table, mouth frozen in a silent scream. The ornament belongs to Darcy (Carolyn Bracken), the blind, silver-haired twin sister of Dani (also Bracken), who was murdered while renovating the very house that Darcy visits not long into the film. The apparent culprit was a mental patient, Olin Boole (Tadhg Murphy), recently discharged from the asylum where Dani’s husband, Ted (Gwilym Lee), is a doctor. Ted wasn’t home during the incident, but he has since...

In the first minutes of “Oddity,” a woman is faced with an impossible choice. She is home alone while her doctor husband works the night shift at a psychiatric hospital. A strange man missing an eye shows up at her door. He claims not to be a threat and informs the resident that someone else, who is trying to hurt her, is already inside the large and isolated home. Should she open the door for this figure or ignore his warning? The nerve-racking scenario takes hold of one’s anxieties and sets the tone for an unsettling ride, which IFC will release theatrically before the film streams on Shudder.

With the 2024 Overlook Film Festival now officially in the rearview mirror, the annual New Orleans celebration of all things horror has announced the winners of its audience and jury awards.
The festival’s top prize, the Audience Award for Feature Film, went to “Oddity,” Damian Mc Carthy’s home invasion horror flick that was a breakout from the SXSW 2024 midnight lineup.
“’Oddity’ delivers a brilliant, bespoke, and tightly entertaining string of ideas that work stronger as a collection — with even these missteps feeling like they branch from a unified center,” IndieWire’s Alison Foreman wrote in her Overlook review of the film. “Similar to Mc Carthy’s earlier ‘Caveat,’ this 98-minute treat demands to be reassessed a second time. Thank the wooden boy it’s coming to streaming: a triumphant addition to the director’s growing filmography and a standout in Shudder’s carousel of kick-ass ghost stories.”

Haunted fairgrounds are an old staple of the horror genre, as much a part of playground lore as they are of cinema. This early short film by Lee Cronin, director of Evil Dead Rise and The Hole In The Ground, brings a distinctly Irish slant to the tale, as three boys break into an abandoned site and dare one another to take a ride on the ghost train.
We see that boys as children and we see two of them, Michael (Owen McDonnell) and Peter (Steve Wall) as adults, revisiting the place, which is sufficient to tell us early on that something went very wrong back then. Though they’re brothers, they have an uncomfortable relationship. Peter wants them to go for a drink together but Michael wants to get back to his Finnish wife and their kids as soon as possible. He seems as if he’s finally making ready to put.

"Where the hell have you been, Barry?" Rock Salt has released an early promo trailer for a totally insane indie horror comedy titled Fried Barry, made in South Africa by a British filmmaker making his feature directorial debut after numerous music videos. This premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival and is playing at tons of other genre festivals this year. "The movie that breaks all the rules." Fried Barry is a bizarre tale told in a genre-bending onslaught of sex, drugs and violence. A spectacle that pulls you in and won’t let go as every expectation is subverted in this boundary-pushing tale of alien abduction. An alien assumes control of a drug addict's body and takes it on a bizarre joyride through Cape Town. Starring Gary Green as Barry, plus Brett Williams, Joey Cramer, Sean Cameron Michael, Steve Wall, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, and Tamer Burjaq. Casting this super weird lookin'...

Director Lee Cronin serves up some pleasingly old-fashioned supernatural scares in creepy Irish horror The Hole in the Ground.
Seána Kerslake (A Date for Mad Mary) stars as single mother Sarah O’Neill, who moves into a dilapidated farmhouse near a remote village in rural Ireland with her young son Chris (James Quinn Markey), after fleeing an abusive relationship with the boy’s father. One night, Chris disappears and Sarah worries that he might have fallen into an enormous sinkhole that has suddenly opened up in the woods, especially when she finds one of his toys near the edge. The next day, Chris turns up safe and sound, but his behaviour is subtly changed and Sarah becomes increasingly worried that the boy is not her son.

Jack Reynor and Will Poulter aren’t done terrorizing movie-goers just yet, as the “Midsommar” duo have re-teamed for another chilling outing that hinges on the kind of myths and folklore that just won’t die. Reynor makes his directorial debut on the new project, a short entitled “Bainne,” which features his frequent co-star Poulter as an Irish farmer already dealing with some gnawing terror who seems bound for even worse circumstances.
Reynor himself has posted the first trailer for the film on his YouTube page, where he bills the outing as “an Irish ghost story set during The Great Famine of 1845-1852. It is inspired by ancient Irish mythology and traditional Japanese legends, as recorded by the Irish writer Lafcadio Hearn at the end of the 19th century.” The film, shot in black and white, boasts stunning lighting and shadows even in the truncated format of a trailer.

"You're not my son." A24 has released a new official trailer for the Irish indie horror film The Hole in the Ground, which just premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival over the weekend. We already featured the UK trailer for this a few weeks ago, but this is a whole other look. The film is the feature debut of Irish director Lee Cronin, and is set on the fringes of a backwood rural town. The festival description sets this up quite well: One night, Sarah's young son disappears into the woods behind their rural home. When he returns, he looks the same, but his behavior grows increasingly disturbing. Soon, Sarah realizes that the boy who returned may not be her son at all... The film stars Seána Kerslake, James Cosmo, Kati Outinen, Simone Kirby, Steve Wall, and James Quinn Markey. There's also a creepy new poster for this (ahhh the spider!

Last year at Sundance Film Festival saw the premiere of A24’s Hereditary, which went on to be the company’s biggest hit worldwide. Do they have another horror hit debuting at the festival this year? Lee Cronin’s directorial debut The Hole in the Ground will premiere in Park City and we now have the first trailer.
Following a single mother and her son moving to a new town, the kid ventures into the woods and discovers a strange hole…in the ground and after his mom finds him, he begins to elicit strange qualities. As we learned with Hereditary (and hundreds of films before it), it wouldn’t be a horror hit if it didn’t have a strange, perhaps possessed child, so it at least has that going for it.
Starring Seána Kerslake, James Cosmo, Kati Outinen, Simone Kirby, Steve Wall, and James Quinn Markey, see the trailer below via Empire.

"I hear you're having some issues... Want to talk about it?" Kaleidoscope has debuted an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Nails, about a woman who wakes up in the hospital after a brutal car accident. She discovers that she is paralyzed and trapped inside her own body. Forced to communicate with an artificial voice program and hooked to a breathing machine, she becomes convinced that a terrifying presence called Nails exists inside her hospital room, and attempts to convince everyone that he wants to kill her. Shauna Macdonald stars, along with Ross Noble, Leah McNamara, Steve Wall, Charlotte Bradley, Dennis Bartok, and Richard Foster-King. This also doesn't look that great, but maybe I'm just not into this kind of ghost horror story. I'm also a bit bothered by the guy trying to imitate Anthony Hopkins, not too original. After suffering a near-fatal accident whilst running, Dana (Shauna MacDonald, The Descent 1&2) is left paralysed in hospital with only an automated voice program to communicate. The accident not only puts a strain on Dana’s marriage to Steve (Steve Wall, The Vikings) but she soon believes that she is being haunted by serial killer and former hospital employee Eric Nilsson (Richard Foster-King, It Never Sleeps).
With Horror becoming a mainstream affair in recent years, it’s always a pleasant surprise when interesting ideas surface in the genre. In this case, Nails succeeds as our protagonist Dana faces varying degrees of challenges such as being bed ridden with only a laptop to communicate whilst facing the ghoulish antagonist Nails. This spares the audiences from the cliched nature of female lead horrors, having them run endlessly around corridors of spooky old houses.
The setting of the film enhances this positive too,...

In Dennis Bartok’s debut horror flick, Shauna Macdonald is an injured athletics coach who learns the hideous secret of the hospital in which she is a patient
Writer-director Dennis Bartok’s mildly diverting debut horror film is a cheerfully derivative exercise in jump scares, dark shadows and low-budget-driven aesthetics. In Dublin, hyper-fit athletics coach Dana (Shauna Macdonald) is hit by a car while out running. She wakes up with a respirator in her throat and serious injuries in a spooky hospital that hardly seems to have any patients, even though her nurse, Trevor (comedian Ross Noble), complains bitterly about being overworked.
As Dana slowly recovers and learns to use a laptop to communicate with her caregivers, husband (Steve Wall), and teen daughter (Leah McNamara), she learns about the hospital’s hideous secret: years ago, a nurse there killed children, died and then seemingly transmogrified into a variant on internet-meme-turned-urban-myth Slender Man,...

A 29-year-old man who was reportedly “fixated on a female wrestler” has been shot by a police deputy outside the WWE Performance Centre in Azalea Park, Orlando today.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:45pmET and the individual was rushed to hospital.
Soon after the chaotic incident, Triple H issued a three tweet message explaining that it was a “deranged individual” behind the shooting;
Unfortunately a deranged individual with no WWE affiliation, who had a court order prohibiting him from being on WWE property was involved in an incident with an Orange County Sherriff’s deputy in the parking lot of the WWE Performance Center. We defer to the Orange County Sherriff’s department for further comment and information.
Orange County Sheriffs held a press conference today and revealed the following details;
Police responded to a trespassing call at 1:30Pm Est and were told the man had a knife.
