Countless different types of Count Dracula stories have been told on the screen over the years, from Bela Lugosi’s black & white icon to Nicolas Cage’s scenery chewing take in Renfield.
The origin story of the Dracula character has also been told, most notably in Gary Shore’s 2014 movie Dracula Untold. And THR reports this week that it’s about to be told again.
Caleb Landry Jones (Antiviral) will star in an untitled Dracula origin story for director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element), which is said to be a “big budgeted film.”
The Hollywood Reporter previews that the movie will be a “retelling of Bram Stoker’s classic Gothic tale with Landry-Jones set to play the Transylvania Count-turned-vampire.”
The site also notes, “Besson’s take will focus on the beginning of Dracula’s life and relationship with his wife.”
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) is also in talks to star.

Horrors on the high sea are a common enough theme, from Ghost Ship and Deathship to The Haunting of the Mary Celeste and Titanic 666 there are plenty of them. The most recent of these, The Haunting of the Queen Mary opens on Halloween Eve,1938 when the ship’s festivities are replaced with terror as an axe-wielding man hacks his way through its corridors.

The retired Rms Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, California is considered one of the most haunted locations in the world — which only somewhat shines through in Gary Shore’s Haunting of the Queen Mary. Any wishes to relive Dark Castle Entertainment levels of production design in Ghost Ship won’t be fulfilled, but that said, Haunting of the Queen Mary is more successful than its brushed-under-the-rug release undersells. Shore and co-writer Tom Vaughan channel the Queen Mary’s grave history for a supernatural infestation that spans decades, complete with atmospheric haunts akin to what’s accomplished in remakes of Thir13en Ghosts or House on Haunted Hill. Proper spookiness prevails, even though the over two-hour length gunks up the film’s gears with subplots that slow momentum.
Alice Eve stars as Anne Calder, who pitches Queen Mary’s Captain Bittner (Dorian Lough) on a virtual 3D tour experience to resurrect the ship’s reputation.

Plot: Stories playing out in modern day and on Halloween night 1938 show how the haunting of the Queen Mary ocean liner has a devastating effect on two different families.
Review: The Rms Queen Mary is a ship with a fascinating history. It was built in the 1930s to provide weekly express service between England and the United States – and for more than a decade it held the Blue Riband for being the fastest passenger liner on the sea. During World War II, it became a troopship that carried Allied soldiers. When the war ended, it went back to carrying civilian passengers until it was retired in 1967 and docked in Long Beach, California. For more than fifty years, it has sat in Long Beach, a tourist attraction. As you would expect from something with such an incredible history, the ship is believed to be haunted. Sometimes the reasons given for this haunting are questionable,...

Alice Eve battles paranormal spirits in the latest trailer for Haunting of the Queen Mary, a supernatural horror mystery that has two families violently entangled when sailing aboard the real-life ocean liner on Halloween night in 1938 and the present day.
As Erin, played by Eve, and husband Patrick (Joel Fry) board the infamous ship with their young son Lukas, played by Lenny Rush, their voyage comes to resemble, in mystery and violence, the experience of another family that sailed aboard the namesake ship in 1938.
As Erin begins to see the haunted ghosts the ocean liner holds from its dark past, she and her husband realize there’s only one way out for them — into the ship’s depths where violent secrets are revealed.

When 2014’s Dracula Untold was announced, it was kind of a big deal considering it would be the first major Dracula movie to hit the big screen since Dracula 2000. Sadly, the Vlad the Impaler origin story was met with mixed reviews and sort of came and went upon its theatrical release. But with the movie recently being added to Netflix and immediately shooting to number 4 on streaming service’s top 10 movies list, now is a good time to revisit not just the film but how its characters—particularly Charles Dance’s Master Vampire—were meant to be the original launching pad for the perpetually stalled Universal Monsters shared cinematic universe (later renamed “the Dark Universe”).
Originally, Dracula Untold was at first titled Dracula: Year Zero and had Sam Worthington (Avatar) set to star with Alex Proyas attached to direct. That iteration was then scrapped and reworked, with the project...

A underrated horror movie has been dominating Netflix all week. For the past several days, subscribers have been loving Dracula Untold, the 2014 supernatural, action-infused horror flick starring Beauty and the Beast actor Luke Evans as the titular legendary vampire. Ever since the 1st, the film has been occupying a spot on the Top 10 most-watched list and today, it sits at #3.
The movie tells the secret origins of Dracula, exploring his beginnings as great military hero Vlad Tepes in medieval Europe, who turns to the dark side – Anakin Skywalker-like – in order to gain the power to destroy his enemies and save those he cares about. As directed by Gary Shore, Untold takes little from Bram Stoker’s original novel, though it does share some concepts with Francis Ford Coppola’s version, and offers a big old reboot of the mythical monster.
Yes, this was one of Universal’s many attempts to relaunch their shared horror universe.

The Dark Universe may have sprung up out of nowhere and then ceased to exist almost as quickly, but Tom Cruise’s disastrous The Mummy wasn’t even the studio’s first attempt at relaunching their stable of classic monsters as the stars of big budget effects-driven blockbusters, although they tried pretty hard to sweep Dracula Untold under the rug.
As the most iconic vampire in history and the second most heavily-adapted fictional character ever behind only Sherlock Holmes, putting a fresh or unique spin on the well-worn tale of Vlad the Impaler is a tricky task, but first-time director Gary Shore gave it his best shot. Essentially a historical epic that takes a turn into the supernatural at around the halfway point, Luke Evans gives a solid performance as a legendary warrior and respected ruler who makes a deal with the dark side to keep his family safe.

Inspired in part by 15th-century Wallachian Prince Vlad the Impaler, Count Dracula first appeared as the prototypical vampire in Bram Stoker’s 1897 epistolary novel Dracula. Alternately played on film over the last century by, among others, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr. Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman, Gerard Butler and Dominic Purcell, the character was most recently portrayed by Luke Evans in Gary Shore’s 2014 dark fantasy original story Dracula Untold, which was intended to be the first installment of the interconnected Dark Universe franchise of horror films.
After it earned less than anticipated though, the franchise was rebooted in 2017 with Tom Cruise’s The Mummy, which suffered an equally underwhelming performance that prompted Universal to abandon its plans for a shared cinematic monsterverse and shift its attention to individual remakes of those classic characters, beginning with Leigh Whannell’s 2020 adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel The Invisible Man.
