Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Chris Naoki Lee’s feature directorial debut, Dinner Party, in which he stars alongside Kara Wang (Top Gun: Maverick), Imani Hakim (Mythic Quest) and Kausar Mohammed (The Flash). The global indie distributor has slated the pic for a day-and-date release on August 19.
Inspired by Lee’s own experiences growing up in a diverse community outside of Los Angeles, the indie ensemble drama follows Izzy (Hakim) and boyfriend Cal (Lee) as they go to a casual reunion dinner party amongst Cal’s childhood friends 10 years after high school. The friends navigate socially sensitive topics, though some fall on deaf ears when it comes to the hyper-masculine Miles (Charles Hittinger). It doesn’t take long for Izzy to notice that Shannon (Wang), co-host and childhood friend to the boys, seems uncomfortable around Miles, as the film simmers into a slow burn that erupts in the final act.

[Note: With the film finally debuting in the UK next week, here’s a reposting of our review of American Fighter from its screening at last years Fantasia Festival]
A fictional sequel to an semi-autobiographical original, American Fighter is an interesting proposition for a film and, at least in cinematic terms, shares a lot in common with the classic martial arts film Bloodsport – both deal with underground fighting and both have a connection to the real-life tales of their characters. In this case George Kosturos plays the alter-ego of producer Ali Afshar – whose story of moving from Iran to America and fitting in by becoming a top-class athlete was told in the 2016 film American Wrestler.

Actor Christopher Naoki Lee, whose credits include AMC’s The Terror and Fox’s Deputy, is set to make his feature directorial debut with the socially-minded pic Dinner Party which he co-wrote with Greek alum Daniel Weaver.
Lee also stars in the film which, as the title suggests, centers on a dinner party with a group of diverse Millennials. As they dine and converse, a verdict arrives for a controversial trial regarding sexual misconduct that has captivated the nation — a very timely topic considering the recent Weinstein verdict. As a result the dinner party turns into a moment for all the attendees to look at their own histories and determine whether the friendship that binds them can withstand their differences, especially when they realize one of their own is guilty of a past transgression.

“We’re gonna lose the farm, son!” husks country star Trace Adkins in the trailer for “Bennett’s War,” which then goes on to further suggest the viewer is in for a steaming pile of platitudinous corn, with a side order of flag-waving. And indeed, Alex Ranarivelo’s sports drama has a pretty hokey story gist: Wounded military veteran forces himself to miraculously recover his full mobility so he can return to motocross racing and get that prize money to … yep, save the family farm.
Maybe such on-the-nose marketing works for some Heartland audiences, but the good news about that bad trailer is that it does this film a disservice. While “War” may be a duly formulaic feel-gooder at heart, it also soft-pedals the more potentially heavy-handed emotional beats to pleasing effect.

"Going wheel to wheel is not smart for someone in your condition." Forrest Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie injured war veteran meets racing sports drama titled Bennett's War, the latest from filmmaker Alex Ranarivelo. The film is about a young soldier in the Army Motorcycle Unit named Marshall Bennett, who is injured by an Ied while serving in combat. He returns home and makes a remarkable comeback from a broken back and leg to be a champion motorcross racer. Michael Roark stars as Bennett, with a cast including country star Trace Adkins, plus Ali Afshar, Allison Paige, Hunter Clowdus, Brando Eaton, Tony Panterra, Michael King, & Taylor Kalupa. This looks exactly as cheesy and kitschy and uber heroic as described, but maybe that's what works for this. Welcome to Last Night on TV, our ongoing series that looks back at what happened on television the night before. If we’re going to stay up all night and watch TV, we might as well talk about it the next day. The Flash has returned from hiatus and has brought back with it all the wonderful things that make DC’s television offerings great. Chiefly, character development and the exploration of interesting themes. In a week where we’re all about to be pummeled by Zack Snyder’s montage of chaos Batman v Superman, this respite is a welcomed one. This week’s episode allows its theme to simmer a little bit, opening with Team Flash trying to figure out ways to creatively splatter Barry against the side of a mountain. Since the loss of Jay Garrick to Zoom’s speedster sword hands, they’ve been looking for a way to become faster. As...

"The Flash" has finally cast a female speedster, but considering her comic book character is a woman of color, why is the actress white? "Days of Our Lives" and "Baby Daddy" actress Allison Paige will be guest starring in an upcoming episode of "The Flash" as the character named Trajectory. In the comics, Trajectory was a female speedster who got her powers from Superman's Lex Luthor when she wanted to become Kid Flash. While casting a female speedster is a personal dream come true, I'm confused at this specific casting choice. No offense to Ms. Paige, but as the internet is blowing up right now discussing the how people of color are underrepresented on film and television, why would "The Flash" cast a white actress as Eliza Harmon/Trajectory, when the character is clearly a woman of color? According to TVLine, Allison Paige will make her debut in episode 16 of...

Yet another metahuman has been added to the second season of The Flash, and that’s Allison Paige as little known speedster Eliza Harmon, a.k.a. Trajectory. Created in 2006, she was chosen by Lex Luthor to participate in the Everyman Project after she came to him begging to be granted superspeed. However, after suffering some issues with that, Eliza was stripped of her powers and ended up being killed in battle.
The Flash is going to be taking things in a slightly different direction, though, as The CW describes her as arriving in town intent on creating maximum chaos. Trajectory’s antics are misinterpreted as having been perpetrated by the Flash himself, and Barry must quickly uncover the mystery of who is the girl under the mask — as well as what is driving her mad desire for speed and destruction.
