De La Soul have announced they are playing a pay-what-you-want concert at New York City’s Lincoln Center in January.
The show will take place on January 17th, 2025 at the Wu Tsai Theater in David Geffen Hall, the home of the New York Philharmonic. As of publishing, the on-sale date isn’t listed on the event page, but the suggested ticket price is $35.
It is worth noting, however, that the minimum ticket price for other events in Lincoln Center’s Choose-What-You-Pay series is $5. Upcoming shows include doom metal act Sunn O))), Portuguese singer Mariza, and organist Kali Malone.
De La Soul have continued as a duo with surviving members Posdnuos and Maseo following Dave “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur’s sudden death in February 2023. Since then, they’ve been joined on stage by the likes of Pharoahe Monch and Talib Kweli.

St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn was full of good vibes and a spirit of musical collaboration on Nov. 10, as two pairs of unique talents — Lil Yachty and Tierra Whack, and Jon Batiste and Gucci Mane — took the stage for Rolling Stone’s first-ever Musicians on Musicians live event. There was laughter, honesty, and even a couple surprise performances, including a haunting solo-piano version of a Gucci Mane hit.

Fatboi Sharif and his DJ Boogaveli are in the middle of a soundcheck for Sharif’s set at the Brooklyn venue Elsewhere’s 15th-anniversary show. Boogaveli blasts Wayne Wonder and Surpriz’s “Enemies” from his DJ deck — I thought he was playing the song to test the venue’s speakers, but they would close Sharif’s performance with the festive 2010 track later that night. Midway through the soundcheck, Sharif resolves that he’ll walk offstage into the crowd during the third song. He jokes about taking his shirt off during...

Electronic musician and producer Rp Boo was already in his 40s when his debut album, Legacy, dropped in 2013, preceded by more than a decade of singles which helped establish Chicago’s footwork genre. Legacy Volume 2 continues the curation of his output from that period, gathering previously unreleased tracks recorded between 2002 and 2007.
Rather than using digital software, Boo constructs his music entirely with old-fashioned equipment: a Roland drum machine and Akai Mpc sampler. Some of the samples are immediately recognizable: “UnderD-Stat” bites the theme from the ’60s animated TV series Underdog, while “Heavy Heat” uses the same horns, originally taken from Ifukube Akira’s theme from Godzilla vs. Mothra, as Pharoahe Monch’s 1999 classic “Simon Says.”
Central to Boo’s process is his merging of samples in dense and abrasive ways, with individual sounds having an exponential effect. Instead of sticking to a steady rhythm during each track, Boo loops vocal...

In November, legendary New York emcee Pharoahe Monch formed a new trio, Th1rt3en, with Jack White’s drummer Daru Jones and acclaimed guitarist Marcus Machado. The group announced their arrival with their first song, “Fight,” featuring Cypress Hill and then, in January, the hip-hop group released the blistering “Cult 45” video during the week of the Presidential Inauguration. It was the fourth single off the group’s debut album A Magnificent Day for an Exorcism, with Monch describing the song as “verbal voodoo.”

In the late Sixties and early Seventies, Kenny Rogers, lead singer of the group First Edition, enjoyed success on the pop charts. It wasn’t until he went solo in 1975 that the bearded singer with the gravelly voice began routinely scoring country hits. His first chart-topper, 1977’s “Lucille,” was a Top Five pop hit as well, setting the stage for a career in which he established a strong foothold in both genres, as well as a regular presence in the ballad-heavy adult contemporary format at the same time.

The last three years have been somber, sobering and not much fun, with only intermittent beams of sunlight. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but the same goes for Our Pathetic Age, DJ Shadow’s first record since before the 2016 election. Shadow’s music has never been overtly political, but rarely has an electronic music collection felt so lashed to the times, intentionally or not.

It’s fair to say that things are going pretty… pretty… pretty… (copyright Larry David) well for Idris Elba at the moment. First, the exceptional Luther recently stormed back to our TV screens for a third gripping series and is captivating us once more. Second, Legendary/Warner Bros’ huge blockbuster Pacific Rim - directed by Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy visionary, Guillermo del Toro – has just noisily elbowed its way into Cineplexes worldwide and sees Elba playing a role originally slated for Tom Cruise.
Pacific Rim is set in a future where giant monsters have mysteriously risen from the depths of the ocean, and soldiers piloting giant robots are sent to do battle with them. Just read that last sentence again: this film is going to rock harder than a child with Adhd who’s missed his, or her, medication.

Warning: I’m (still) a huge Kanye West fan, and I’m here to give you proof that rap goes perfectly even with the story which is set in nineteenth-century China! A new bit of Kanye West Music has made its way to the internet. "White Dress," a song off the soundtrack of the upcoming RZA film "Man With the Iron Fists," is a welcome return to the older, more thoughtful flow of early Kanye.
The snippet posted on Pusha-t's website sees West empathizing with his "baby," a woman who is trying to better herself and her style.
It's also a song about taking a woman from the nightclub to the altar (where she'll be wearing a white dress). RZA rapped West's hook in a red carpet appearance at the Bet Hip-Hop Awards. It goes like this: "I seen you in the club in a tight dress, but I picture you in church with a white dress." (Endearingly, RZA went on to explain the lyric's meaning: "So that's basically talking about, you know, some of these girls, you know, you want...

Last week's "RapFix Live" was filled with fireworks and controversy after visits from Lil B, Pharoahe Monch and Consequence, and this week looks to be just as exciting as rapper Saigon and producer Just Blaze are set to drop by the "RapFix" studio on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Et.
Locked up as a youth, Sai got his rapping start in the NYC mixtape scene in the early 2000s. After a memorable street run, Saigon compiled the best of his mixtape material on the independent retail release Warning Shots in 2004. The Mc would later hook up with hip-hop super-producer Just Blaze, sign to Atlantic Records and see his official debut LP, The Greatest Story Never Told, become one of rap's most anticipated releases.

The piece detailed the history of West's G.O.O.D. Music label, where Cons was once signed. 'Quence was photographed for the article, but when the issue hit stands his picture didn't appear.

Lil B is unpredictable. The polarizing rapper, who has most recently made headlines for naming his upcoming album I'm Gay, is now collaborating with Roc Nation signee Jay Electronica. According to B, the pair are working together on an Ep.
For the most part, B — who is most famous for his simplistic songs like "Ellen DeGeneres" and "I'm Miley Cyrus" — isn't taken seriously as a lyricist, while Jay is regarded as one of the game's top up-and-coming MCs. So for hip-hop purists, the collaboration may seem odd, but it makes perfect sense to Lil B.

These days everyone's a critic. No, really: The folks at NextMovie got rapper Pharoahe Monch to review Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch for a video series entitled, appropriately enough, "Rappers Review Movies." (Previous installments include Lil Mama on Big Momma's House 3 -- oh, the sweet poetry in that pairing -- and Talib Kweli on The Fighter.) So what did the Queens-born self-identified nerd (who famously sampled the theme from Godzilla for his chart-topping 1999 anthem "Simon Says" and has a new album out now) think of Sucker Punch?...

With all the hype surrounding the controversial album cover, the upcoming short film and the ongoing "G.O.O.D. During the Los Angeles premiere of "Runaway," West revealed that the next single from the album (the third overall, after "Power" and "Runaway") will be a track called "All of the Lights," and it will feature a staggering list of guest stars. On that track, there are drop-ins from Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Elton John, Fergie, John Legend, The-Dream, Tony Williams, Kid Cudi, Charlie Wilson, Ryan Leslie and La Roux's Elly Jackson. "It's completely seamless and completely ghetto as f---," West said of the track.

"DJ Hero 2" has entered the last leg of its path toward an October 19 release date, and though they've revealed 105 tracks that will appear featuring talent like DJ Qbert and DJ Shadow, FreeStyleGames had not yet named what the sequel's mix list would include. That's all changed now, however, and they've even grouped the combos and re-styled singles by producer.

HollywoodNews.com: Lady Gaga already has some of the biggest hits of the past year and so it would only make sense for three of them to be included in the new DJ Hero 2 video game that is slated to hit stores on October 19.

From Eminem’s “Not Afraid,” Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” David Guetta’s “Memories” feat. Kid Cudi, and Lil’ Wayne’s “Lollipop” feat. Static Major music fans will find more than a handful of songs to entertain themselves.

Late on Thursday (June 3), the latest leaked track from Eminem's eagerly-anticipated sixth album Recovery hit the Internet. "Won't Back Down" is a powerful burner that features some shout-along verses from Slim Shady that bounce and dart all over a bottom-heavy, bluesy track built by DJ Khalil. Though some fans were skeptical of the fact that Pink was on the track, her rugged-but-pretty pipes add a great twist to the chorus. Past Emimem albums haven't contained a ton of guest spots, so each and every tag-team Shady chooses is gone over with a fine tooth comb. But "Won't Back Down" ranks up there with some of Eminem's best songs, which means the team-up with Pink should be considered a gigantic success.
On paper, Eminem and Pink don't seem like they would work very well together. Though Pink has brushed up against the hip-hop world in the past (most notably on the...

"Baby" debuted on Monday and quickly shot up the iTunes sales chart (it currently sits at #2, just behind Ke$ha's seemingly indestructible "Tik Tok"). These days, Dame is back where he started, making music independently along with brokering art and producing television.
Dash has a complex in lower Manhattan, DD172, where he has two music studios and an art gallery, and also publishes a magazine and maintains CreativeControl.tv. Mos Def has dubbed the building the "24/7 karate school" because of all of the artists that come through and work together, including Mos, the Black Keys, Jay Electronica, Jim Jones, the RZA, Raekwon the Chef and producer Ski (Reasonable Doubt) to name a few.
