Exclusive: Following the success of Netflix’s Wednesday and Oscar contender Elvis, Andrew Mittman has renewed his overall deal with MGM Television.
Mittman, via his 1.21 label, has re-upped his exclusive deal with the studio, fresh from the launch of Amazon’s Christoph Waltz-fronted series The Consultant.
It’s three years since Mittman struck his first deal with MGM Television.
Last year, he promoted Kai Dolbashian to Head of Development at the company.
It’s a sign of intent for MGM, which was restructured in November after its acquisition by Amazon, in a move that saw Lindsay Sloane become Head of MGM Scripted Television and new roles for Rola Bauer as President of International TV.
Mittman and 1.21 just launched The Consultant on Amazon last month; the series, which was created by Tony Basgallop, stars Waltz as a mysterious consultant who comes to the rescue of a mobile gaming company after...

Nicolas Cage has played some odd roles over the years. He's been a comic book character with a flaming skull in "Ghost Rider," twin brothers in "Adaptation," a noir superhero in "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," and a fictional version of himself in "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent." His new role is one of the craziest I've seen, though hearing yourself say out loud that Nicolas Cage is playing a vodka-loving dragon doesn't sound as weird as it probably should.
Cage is voicing the lead role in the upcoming TV series "Highfire," based on the novel by Eoin Colfer, according...

Exclusive: Nicolas Cage’s vodka-loving dragon has a new home.
Deadline understands that Highfire, the TV series based on Eoin Colfer’s adult thriller novel, is now in the works at Paramount+. In 2020, we revealed that the project, which will see The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent star voice the lead character, was in the works at Amazon.
The True Detective-meets-Pete’s Dragon project is being adapted for television by Davey Holmes, the creator of Epix’s Get Shorty TV series. MGM is the studio. Holmes and Cage executive produce alongside Andrew Mittman of 1.21 via his exclusive production deal at MGM.
The genre-bending, live-action series Highfire is a gritty crime-thriller with doses of magical realism. Its central character, Highfire (Cage) is a vodka-drinking, Flashdance-loving dragon who lives an isolated existence in the bayous of Louisiana.
Paramount+ declined to comment.

Much of the coverage of Amazon’s $8.45 billion deal to acquire MGM has focused on the company’s film attributes and the impact on theatrical distribution.
The executive shuffle on the film side, featuring the likes of Michael De Luca, will get a lot of headlines, as will the importance of owning IP and a film library that can feed Amazon’s hungry video services. But the Lion’s television business has been one of its most profitable divisions in recent years and the mega-deal will certainly put a new focus on this unit.
There will be inevitable attention paid to which classic MGM film properties Amazon Prime Video and its sister streamer IMDb TV can reboot, but the deal could also have a major boost on the streamer’s unscripted fortunes. Then there are question marks over the future of Epix and of MGM Television as a stand-alone entity.

2020 was a disappointing year by pretty much every metric in existence – so why should the movies be an exception? Whether viewed in a theater or in the safety and comfort of home, here are 11 films that left me looking for the exits:
10. “Irresistible”: During his tenure at “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart spoke truth to power and keenly observed the hypocrisies and the contrivances of the American political system. As the writer-director of this supposed satire of electoral politics, he vacillates between the painfully obvious and the ludicrously improbable.
9. “Superintelligence”: A sentient AI program (voiced by the ubiquitous James Corden) seeks to wipe out humanity unless do-gooder Melissa McCarthy can convince him otherwise, in another disappointing collaboration between McCarthy and director Ben Falcone, her husband. (Falcone is an inspired comic performer but has yet to make a case for his career as a filmmaker.)

Amazon Prime Video has taken in for development a scripted series starring Nicolas Cage as the infamous Joe Exotic, made a household name by the hugely popular Netflix docuseries Tiger King. The project, which had been in the works at CBS TV Studios, hails from Brian Grazer, American Vandal showrunner Dan Lagana, and Paul Young.
The yet untitled series was taken out to buyers in May, with Amazon quickly emerging as its likely destination. Negotiations for the project were in their final stages when NBCUniversal last month gave a mega pickup to Ucp’s Joe Exotic (working title), a limited series starring Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin, which received a joint straight-to-series order by NBC, Peacock and USA.
The Amazon Prime Joe Exotic series will be co-produced by Amazon Studios, Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios.

Eoin Colfer’s irreverent, genre-blending fantasy/crime novel, Highfire, is getting adapted by Amazon as a live-action/animated hybrid television series. Intriguingly, the project will have the services of Nicolas Cage, who’s on tap to provide the voice role of the eponymous character, who happens to be a dragon, one who lives in Louisiana, spending his days sipping vodka.
Highfire, a project residing at MGM/UA Television, has been put into development by Amazon, according to Deadline. The would-be series will operate under the creative purview of showrunner Davey Holmes, creator of Epix’s Get Shorty adaptation series, along with producer runs on shows such as Showtime’s Shameless, Fox’s Chicago Code and cult-adored ABC Bryan Fuller series Pushing Daisies. Disney+ UK has unveiled its September content schedule, and the big centrepiece – as you may have guessed – is the premiere of Mulan, which will skip its UK cinema release after a controversial decision by Disney bosses, who previously hadn’t been very keen to put their upcoming big budget projects on the streaming service during 2020’s ongoing madness.
The unveiling of the highly anticipated live-action Mulan movie on Disney+ seems to be a first step towards bypassing cinemas for the foreseeable future, and it will be interesting to see how successful the gambit is with a price tag of £19.99 attached to the experience. The film certainly has a strong cast, with Liu Yifei as Mulan, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li in a supporting role.

Artemis Fowl on Disney+ is just one in a long line of films to change the race of supporting characters while preserving the ‘white hero’ trope
Mainstream family entertainment has made progress when it comes to representation of non-white people, and Disney+’s lavish new fantasy Artemis Fowl ticks a lot of the right boxes, at least on paper. But some conversations still need to be had. Especially when it comes to taking white-centric stories and simply swapping out a few supporting characters while preserving the white, usually male, leader at the centre.
Artemis Fowl is a sort of high-tech Harry Potter, adapted from the bestselling books by Irish author Eoin Colfer and directed by Kenneth Branagh. Its hero is a boy genius (newcomer Ferdia Shaw) with inherited wealth and a smug sense of superiority. Assisting Fowl on his adventure to find his missing father is his “friend, mentor and bodyguard” Domovoi Butler.

Based on the series of young-adult novels by Eoin Colfer, Artemis Fowl landed in the nest that is Disney Plus recently, and has garnered a very-mixed, often negative response from fans and critics alike in the small time it’s been available. I, then, tried to avoid these reviews so I could sit down and watch it with an open mind, as I try to do with every film I see.
With the horrendous virus causing the world to go into lockdown, we’ve had a few months of not-too-many new movies coming out, especially bigger blockbusters. Sure, we’ve seen some release digitally or on streaming platforms, but they’ve been few and far between. Artemis Fowl, then, is something that may appeal to those who...

For starters, it’s no Harry Potter. But when Aretmis Fowl debuts on Disney + on June 12th, you’ll wonder why this fussed-over and broken film version of Irish author Eoin Colfer’s young-adult bestseller — about a 12-year-old criminal mastermind — had to be this dramatically inert and emotionally barren. Colfer once described his fantasy series of eight Artemis novels as “Die Hard with fairies.” If only. What’s on screen comes up short on excitement despite the presence of some heady talent at the helm. That’s Belfast’s Sir Kenneth Branagh directing,...

I’m sure there must be some appeal to the Artemis Fowl book series that serves as the basis for this film adaptation of the same name. However, whatever might be there is certainly not translated to the movie. Artemis Fowl is something both bizarre and bland, boring while also being deeply strange. What could have been a fun and somewhat different kind of blockbuster for kids is instead just a big ugly mess. Pulled from a handful of different dates on the calendar over the last two years, it’s now being dumped on Disney Plus tomorrow, saving it from the box office failure that was undoubtedly in its future. The movie is a fantasy adventure, based on two of the first books in the Artemis Fowl franchise. I’ll keep the synopsis brief, since it frankly doesn’t make any sense, anyhow. Here, we’re introduced to Artemis...

“Artemis Fowl” was supposed to be Disney’s “Harry Potter,” the kick-off installment in a young-adult fantasy franchise that might have spawned sequels and merch and its own corner of the company’s theme-park kingdom. Instead, it arrives 20 years on, a very late addition to an already overcrowded genre, adding little but noise, garish CGI and more convoluted mythology about the supposedly real civilizations of magical folk — fairies and goblins and trolls — that live among us. Better films have tried and failed to launch hit series, which suggests that “Artemis Fowl” should have taken a lesson from such unwieldy one-offs as “The Golden Compass,” “Ender’s Game” and “The Last Airbender”: Don’t count your chickens before they’ve flopped.
First optioned in 2000, “Artemis Fowl” was finally shot in 2018 and delayed multiple times before being dumped onto the Disney Plus streaming service (by a studio with bigger franchises to focus...

Like a fairy trapped in a cage, there’s a different movie trapped inside “Artemis Fowl,” struggling to break free of the more conventional trappings of the big, kids-oriented fantasy adventure story that premieres on June 12 on Disney+.
And by the way, there’s a real fairy trapped in a cage in “Artemis Fowl,” along with a whole lot of dwarves, goblins, elves, trolls, the occasional centaur and enough other magical creatures to make a lot of “Harry Potter” fans happy, along with scattered aficionados of, say, “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “His Dark Materials” and even “Star Wars.”
But while an energetic kids’ fantasy with cool creatures fighting each other is probably a reasonable win for Disney’s new premium service in these days before most theaters reopen, it’s hard to watch it as an adult and not wish for something that produced a little more magic of its own.

Originally destined to be a tentpole theatrical release in May, Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of the much loved Eoin Colfer books instead premieres as a Disney+ exclusive. It’s a shame in a way, since Branagh’s movie is colorful, kinetic, and highly cinematic with several rollicking set pieces and some Harry Potter-level world building.
On the other hand, the streaming release does at least save fans of the books feeling cheated out of the price of a cinema ticket and a bucket of popcorn as well as a morally ambiguous and frequently ruthless main character. As many predicted, the least interesting thing about Artemis Fowl is Artemis himself.
A 12-year-old genius and criminal mastermind, Fowl Jr. played by newcomer Ferdia Shaw, is the son of wealthy Irish businessman Artemis Fowl Sr. (Colin Farrell). The elder Fowl has been accused of stealing various priceless items from museums including the Rosetta...

Sometimes no matter how hard you try, it comes a time to admit to yourself that you really might not be the intended demographic for the movie you’re watching. This moment came for me about 20 minutes into Disney Plus’ latest feature length offering, Artemis Fowl when I realised that I had absolutely no idea who anyone in the story was or why I should care about any of them.
Based on the popular Ya fantasy series by Eoin Colfer and directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film stars newcomer Ferdia Shaw in the titular role and tells the story of a young criminal prodigy, on the hunt for a secret society of fairies.
When his father, the suspected international criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl Sr (Colin Farrell) disappears without trace, 12 year old Artemis junior (Shaw) vows to find his father and bring him back home whatever it takes. Aided by his...

Kenneth Branagh directs this family-fantasy-by-numbers adapted from Eoin Colfer’s bestselling teen novels
After the film version of Cats, the world agreed that Judi Dench could never, should never do anything as bizarre as her performance as Old Deuteronomy, the bafflingly attired matriarch of the Jellicle cat tribe, wearing a fur coat in addition to her normal fur. But now Dench might actually have topped her feline folly, in this family fantasy adventure, adapted by Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl from Eoin Colfer’s bestselling novels about the teen Irish hero in touch with magical forces and directed by Kenneth Branagh. She plays someone called Commander Root, who is the security chief of the fairy peoples who live deep underground.
Dench is styling a very notable military-style outfit in emerald green, which makes her look like some forgotten intergalactic villain from Star Wars. Root has a growly, twangy, slightly Cornish...

For every “Twilight,” there is a “Divergent.” For every “Resident Evil,” there is a “Warcraft.” And for every “Harry Potter,” there are a number of movies just like “Artemis Fowl.” Disney’s adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s popular Ya series has been mired in development hell for nearly two decades, first cycling through producers and directors, only to weather an association with Harvey Weinstein, face a series of delayed release dates, and finally end up on the Mouse House’s streaming service in the middle of a pandemic.

The Artemis Fowl movie was supposed to hit theaters at the end of May. But with the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to impact movie theaters, Disney has decided to premiere the film on their Disney+ streaming service. Since the first trailers came out, reaction from fans has been mixed. (Some have expressed their dismay by saying that now they understand how Percy Jackson fans felt about their film adaptation—something Disney+ hopes to remedy with their upcoming Percy Jackson series.)
The reason fans are so torn by the trailer is that the Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw) introduced is a fresh-faced, naive child who discovers the fairy world after his father, a “collector” of stolen artifacts, goes missing. He gets an explanation from his bodyguard Butler (Nonso Anozie) that his father was actually part of a group trying to keep dangerous magical artifacts from harming mankind.

Kenneth Branagh has already overcome the challenge of adapting William Shakespeare to the big screen in films such as “Hamlet” and “Much Ado About Nothing,” but it turns out The Bard is no match for Christopher Nolan. In a recent interview with Total Film (via /Film), Branagh said that Nolan’s “Tenet” screenplay was so dense and complicated that he had to re-read it more than any other script he’s ever worked on. That’s quite a statement considering Branagh been a working actor for nearly 40 years.
“I kid you not, I read this screenplay more times than I have ever read any other thing I have ever worked on,” Branagh said. “It was like doing the Times crossword puzzle every day, I would imagine. Except the film and the screenplay didn’t expect you, or need you, to be an expert.”

It’s time to check out what Disney+ UK has planned for June! Last month, the streaming service added Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as its centrepiece, and this month will see the arrival of a first-look premiere in Kenneth Branagh’s new family film Artemis Fowl, which has skipped its cinema release and landed on Disney+. The big budget movie is based on the bestselling book by Eoin Colfer, and follows 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl as he sets out to find his missing dad. The project boasts a stellar cast that includes Ferdia Show, Colin Farrell, Josh Gad and Judi Dench. We’ll at least get a quick chance to guess for ourselves if it would have been a box office hit for the mouse house or not.

Disney Plus has revealed the full list of movies and TV shows, both original and pre-existing content, that will be coming to the streaming service over the next month. The site will be adding the new titles to its library in three batches throughout June. It’s not the biggest haul of new material if we’re being honest, but there are a few key items you’ll want to look out for.
Most notably, Artemis Fowl is hitting Disney Plus on June 12th. The fantasy movie directed by Thor‘s Kenneth Branagh, and based off the popular Ya novels by Eoin Colfer, was originally set to debut in theaters but has been switched to a streaming release given the Covid-19 pandemic. This is the first time the studio has made such a move, but it’s been noted they may do so again if this one turns out to be successful.

Here’s how June is supposed to work, entertainment-wise: multiplexes fill up with big, loud, expensive movies, and television scales back ambition in favor of low-risk, low-impact programming. But in 2020’s upside-down world of closed theaters and social distancing, the old rules don’t apply. Sure, you can tune into the Watt brothers playing an elaborate version of tag. But you can also watch: a potentially franchise-launching adaptation of a popular Ya series on a streaming service; a documentary on Bruce Lee; new movies from Spike Lee and Judd Apatow...

Since its launch late last year, Disney streaming service Disney+ has mostly been a place for the enormous entertainment conglomerate to house all of its library content. Big hits like The Mandalorian have been few and far between. Perhaps that changes this month as Disney+ welcomes arguably its biggest original movie yet.
Obviously, Artemis Fowl was never intended to be a Disney+ exclusive. The live-action adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s beloved Ya novel was initially set for a theatrical release. Then Covid-19 reared its ugly head and sent everyone indoors. Now Artemis Fowl is set to be a fascinating test case for how original movies can fare on Disney’s streamer.
Elsewhere throughout the month is the usual Disney+ fare. Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian premieres three of its episodes this month, including the finale on June 19. Be Our Chef also wraps up this month while It’s a Dog’s Life continues on strong.

"Your mission – is to steal it." Disney has released one more official trailer for the long-awaited Artemis Fowl movie, an epic adaptation of the fantasy book series by Eoin Colfer. This trailer confirms that the movie will be available streaming on Disney+ on June 12th, skipping theaters entirely (due to the pandemic shutdown). The story follows a 12-year-old mastermind named Artemis Fowl, who discovers a world below ground of armed and dangerous--and extremely high-tech--fairies. He kidnaps one of them, Holly Short, and holds her for ransom in an effort to restore his family's fortune and find his father. Ferdia Shaw stars as Artemis, and the full cast includes Lara McDonnell as Captain Holly Short, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Nonso Anozie, Tamara Smart, Miranda Raison, Joshua McGuire, and Hong Chau. This looks like it might be an entertaining adventure, probably best they're dropping it online right away. Family-time fun. Here's the...

Earlier this month, Disney made the official announcement that Artemis Fowl, the feature film adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s bestselling middle grade novel, would be debuting on Disney+ rather than in theaters. Now, we have a release date…
Artemis Fowl will hit Disney+ on June 12th, which is not so different from its planned May 29th cinema release date.
