Prompted by the massive success of the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, ABC released dozens of thrillers and horror movies under their Movie of the Week banner between 1969 and 1975. Starting in 1973, the network branched out into late-night programming intended to compete with talk show king Johnny Carson over on NBC, and the five feature-length telefilms collected as The Classic Ghosts by Kino Cult originally aired in that slot.
These telefilms were shot live on two-inch tape in a manner akin to daytime dramas, which does lead to the occasional flubbed line of dialogue. Furthering the comparison, two of the movies were directed by Lela Swift, who helmed over half of Dark Shadows’s approximately 1,200 episodes. Gloria Monty, who directed two others, went on to radically reshape the floundering soap General Hospital in the late ’70s. It’s notable that the creative team behind the telefilms were mostly women. One of the most heartbreaking casualties in Smile was Rose's cat, Mustache, but there are still questions about how Mustache died in Smile. Smile follows Rose (Sosie Bacon), a doctor who gets cursed by an entity that presents itself through people with a sinister smile. Rose begins experiencing hallucinations induced by the demon, which takes a toll on her life, leading to some horrific moments in which Rose and those around her begin to question her hold on reality. This is highlighted by the terrible fate of the cat Mustache.
After becoming cursed by this entity, Rose has trouble finding her cat. Its tragic fate is revealed during her nephew's birthday party when the boy opens Rose's present to discover her cat's dead inside. Rose's boyfriend asks her if she killed Mustache, and while she swears she didn't, the movie leaves the culprit a mystery. The moment is effective because...

Afternoons of Solitude.Ernest Hemingway’s Death in the Afternoon (1932), his book of reportage on bullfighting, was received skeptically by some critics upon its publication. When reviewing it in The New York Times, R. L. Duffs contended that the work’s long-winded spiritualism was at odds with the writer’s habitually lapidary prose. Catalan director Albert Serra is also a self-described admirer of the sport; it repels some even while it mesmerizes others with its peculiar mixture of artful pageantry and shocking gore. His new nonfiction film Afternoons of Solitude (2024) eschews the Hemingway-esque temptation to dress up in philosophical garb a spectacle that, at its core, stems as much from crude, irrational impulses as it does from the desire to touch the sublime through a proximity to violence. In Afternoons, whose title professes its affinity for Hemingway’s rendering of tauromaquia, Serra follows the Peruvian bullfighter Andrés Roca Rey, observing...

You Should Have Left delves into marital issues and guilt, with a unique take on a haunted house ending. Kevin Bacon's character's decision to stay behind symbolizes atonement for past sins in the film. The house in the movie represents a purgatory for sinners haunted by their past actions.
Blumhouse Productions' lesser-known offering of supernatural horror, You Should Have Left, plays with the haunted house sub-genre and places a modern twist on an ending packed with hidden meaning about marital and domestic issues. Starring Kevin Bacon as Theo Conroy and Amanda Seyfried as his wife, Susanna, You Should Have Left is a slow-burn thriller with deeper meaning about the larger ramifications of sin, marital strife, and guilt. Written and directed by David Koepp, You Should Have Left was based on the 2017 novella of the same name by author Daniel Kehlmann.

The impeachment probe against President Joe Biden is “probably nearing the conclusion,” said Republican Rep. Don Bacon. The congressman said that lawyers for the committees investigating Biden “say, at this point, there’s not a specific crime that has been committed.”

Kevin Bacon's death scene in Friday the 13th required physical endurance and creative problem-solving due to equipment malfunctions. The special effects team had to think quickly to save the gruesome death scene, with an assistant blowing through a tube to mimic blood pumping. Despite challenges, the iconic death scene in Friday the 13th featuring Kevin Bacon's character was a gnarly and realistic horror moment.
It may come as a surprise to those who haven't seen the movie, but Kevin Bacon appears in Friday the 13th, and his bloody death was as worrisome for the actor as it was terrifying for audiences. The original Friday the 13th premiered in May 1980 and introduced the world to Camp Crystal Lake, Pamela Voorhees, who would originate one of the greatest slasher villains of all time, and slasher movies as a new genre of horror. Val Kilmer turned down the role of Jack Swigert in Apollo 13 to star in The Ghost and the Darkness instead. Kilmer's decision cost him a reunion with his former Tombstone co-star Bill Paxton, who played Fred Haise in Apollo 13. Despite missing out on Apollo 13, Kilmer's career has many highlights, with Tombstone being one of them.
Val Kilmer was nearly cast in an award-winning space movie from 1995 that would have doubled as a special Tombstone reunion. The '90s were an outstanding decade for the actor. After beginning the decade portraying Jim Morrison in The Doors, Kilmer followed that up with standout performances in Tombstone, Batman Forever, Heat, and The Prince of Egypt, among others. On the Wednesday episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the host and guest Kevin Bacon swapped some tales from their early careers.
Clarkson revealed that she didn’t even know the person she was living with when she first moved to Los Angeles.
“I actually moved out to L.A. with some random person I did not know,” she told Bacon. “Yeah, she just needed a roommate. I was like, ‘I’ll do it,’ and I moved from Texas to L.A. with a random stranger.”
The arrangement did not last long. Not because of a personality crisis, but because the apartment was consumed in a fire.
“It burned down, so yeah,” Clarkson said. “Then, I slept in my car for a few days and then tried out for a show called ‘American Idol,’ so it all worked out.”

We knew Eddie Murphy was coming back for a new "Beverly Hills Cop" movie, but between the strike and a million think pieces on the decline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we all kinda lost track of where this fourth Axel Foley adventure stood.
Finally, thanks to Empire, we not only get proof-of-life of "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley" in the form of a still from the movie, but we also get a little info on what's going down in this legacy sequel from legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Here's the rundown: Netflix will distribute this sequel (not Paramount) sometime in 2024, and it will be bringing back not just Murphy in the lead role, but also some familiar faces from the previous films, including Judge Reinhold, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot.
In his chat with Empire, Bruckheimer was over the moon about Murphy's work, saying that every time he stepped on...

The chemists and their friends, Winston, J, Charles, J, and Willie (and Gloria), ultimately recoup some of their losses after a shootout between Rory's gang and Dog's gang, allowing Winston to take back some cash and walk away. Big Chris and his son Little Chris, who were the most principled criminals in the movie, come out on top, as Big Chris takes the money for himself after Harry's death and becomes a lender. The ending is open-ended, but it's likely that Tom dropped the guns before answering his phone, given the string of bad luck they had experienced throughout the film and the pressure he would feel from his friends.

Fox News host Brian Kilmeade was caught on a hot mic calling a congressman a “dumbass” for voting for Kevin McCarthy during Tuesday’s Speaker vote, and Seth Meyers got a pretty big kick out of that on Wednesday night, pointing out some irony.
As part of his “Closer Look” segment, Meyers once again roasted Republicans for not being able to decide on a House Speaker, calling up footage of GOP politicians publicly shaming their own party. But then, he pulled up a clip of Kilmeade — or rather, Kilmeade’s voice — shaming Rep. Don Bacon specifically.
The footage is of the live vote in the House but, as Bacon is called on to give his vote, Kilmeade is clearly heard saying “dumbass” after the congressman doesn’t say Jim Jordan’s name.
“Do you know how bad things are for you when Brian Kilmeade is calling you a dumbass?” Meyers mocked with a laugh.

Jim Jordan is on track to lose a second ballot to secure the House speakership, with 22 Republicans voting against him on Wednesday — two more than the 20 who voted against him on Tuesday. Jordan can only afford to lose four caucus members if he wants to win the gavel.

The Tremors franchise consists of seven films and a TV series, but it can be difficult to find them all in one place due to the availability on streaming platforms. While most Tremors movies can be streamed on AMC+, the 2003 TV series is not available digitally in the U.S., but it can be purchased on DVD through Amazon. To support the franchise and potentially encourage the production of a Tremors 8, it is recommended to rent or buy the movies through video-on-demand services, as they generate more revenue for the studio.
The Tremors franchise has racked up numerous entries across more than three decades of existence, but they’re not all easy to track down. The franchise was born in 1990 with the original film, Tremors. The movie stars Kevin Bacon as a desert-town handyman. Thanks to a new teaser trailer, we finally have our first real look at Peter Dinklage’s portrayal of The Toxic Avenger in Macon Blair’s upcoming reboot of the cult classic. Check out the updated take on the superhero black comedy below.
Dinklage portrays the titular janitor-turned-superhero, here known as Winston Gooze, while a nearly unrecognizable Elijah Wood plays a black-toothed villain named Fritz Garbinger. Kevin Bacon co-stars as Fritz’s brother Bob, a “corporate overlord” that Blair (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore) has compared to Lex Luthor. Rounding out the cast are Taylour Paige as JJ Doherty and Jacob Tremblay as Gooze’s stepson, Wade.
The teaser opens with news clips about The Toxic Avenger himself, who is described as a “freaky folk hero.” After some eyewitness interviews, there’s breaking news coverage of an extremist organization called the “Nasty Lads” taking hostages at a lunch counter.

Kevin Bacon may have taken a paddle to the ass in Animal House and an arrow through the throat in Friday the 13th but he gained his first true fame with 1984’s Footloose. From there, with movies like Flatliners, A Few Good Men and, perhaps most importantly, JFK, it seemed like Kevin Bacon had worked with just about every major name in Hollywood. Thus, the greatest movie challenge of all time was born: Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
But, as he explained on a recent episode of Podcrushed (via Entertainment Weekly), Kevin Bacon initially thought the Six Degrees game was making fun of him. “I thought that, and this is my own acting insecurity — impostor syndrome — I thought that the joke of it was that the great actors could be connected to a loser actor like me…They were saying, ‘Look, can you believe he can be connected by Meryl Streep?...

Kevin Bacon is someone who has had such a great career packed with roles that you can connect many actors to him in six degrees or less. And that’s even without any kind of lengthy franchises tied to his name. However, one film is forever synonymous with him and that’s 1984’s Footloose. The 80s icon has a number of interesting projects coming up, including appearing in the Toxic Avenger remake which stars Peter Dinklage, and Ti West’s sequel to X and Pearl, MaXXXine.
It seems, though, that no matter how many movies he’s in, he just can’t escape Footloose. The actor has playfully joked about the countless times Kenny Loggins’ theme song was played at a wedding or party he’s attending, complete with people looking to him for some dancing. Variety reports that Bacon initially rejected the recognition for his high school drama as an up-and-coming star.

TikTok has been filled with fans romantically spinning their pets to Taylor Swift’s “August” in recent weeks. Now, Penn Badgley and Kevin Bacon have gotten in on the action, sharing their own version of the “August” TikTok trend.
In the clip, posted by Badgley, the You actor runs through a hallway where he finds Bacon and the pair dramatically twirl around (the face Bacon makes is A+ acting material). The TikTok was likely recorded at the same time Bacon appeared on Badgley’s podcast Podcrushed in an episode that debuted earlier this week.

Kevin Bacon is opening up about Footloose, the movie that launched his career, and how he struggled with fame following the film’s success.
During a recent episode of Podcrushed, the actor told hosts Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari that he saw himself as more of a serious actor and didn’t want to only be known for his dancing role as Ren McCormack in the 1984 film.
“When I became a pop star, the last thing I wanted to be was a pop star,” he said. “I had already moved into, you know, ‘I want to be Dustin Hoffman or Meryl [Streep] or John Cazale or [Robert] De Niro. I want to work with [Martin] Scorsese. I want to do Chekhov.’ You know what I mean?”

Kevin Bacon’s star-making role in 1984’s “Footloose” put him on a path that clashed with his original aspirations as a performer, the actor recently said on the “Podcrushed” podcast (via Insider). Bacon had no idea he was auditioning for a “dance movie” when he tested for the role of Ren McCormack.
“When I did the dance movie, I was not a dancer. I wasn’t trained as a dancer,” Bacon said. “If I’m being honest, I didn’t even really understand that it was a dance movie. I thought it was just a movie, and then, where they would indicate that there was dancing, I would just get up.”
Bacon continued, “They said something about a choreographer and I said, ‘You don’t really need a choreographer. I’ll just get up and dance. It’s not a big deal. Just play the record for me and I’ll jump around.

Writer/Director Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel At Home in This World Anymore) introduces a very different Toxie in his Troma remake, The Toxic Avenger. Here, it’s the downtrodden Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage) who’s dunked into the toxic sludge that transforms him into a monstrous crusader against an evil corporation headed by greedy CEO Bob Garbinger (Kevin Bacon). Blair packs the contemporary update with reverent nods to the original but with a new approach that makes it accessible to those unfamiliar with the Troma classic.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Macon Blair after The Toxic Avenger premiere at Fantastic Fest, where he shared what inspired his remake and the casting behind the new Toxie.
Like many, Blair connected with the 1984 film not just for its cartoonish violence but also for its relatable DIY filmmaking.

Lloyd Kaufman’s 1984 horror-comedy “The Toxic Avenger” is, in its own trashy way, a classic. Classic enough to spawn its own mini-franchise, at least, as well as prop up the fortunes of Kaufman’s company, Troma Entertainment, for multiple decades. And you don’t mess with the classics, which is why it’s just as well that writer-director Macon Blair throws it all out but the toxic waste in his new reboot.
Compared to Kaufman’s proud juvenilia, the point of view in this rebooted “Toxic Avenger” is downright mature. Peter Dinklage stars as Winston, a janitor at a sinister corporation called BT Healthstyle in the town of St. Roma’s Village and a single stepfather to sensitive preteen Wade (Jacob Tremblay). Wade’s mother died of cancer a few years earlier, and Winston dutifully cares for her son while getting little emotionally in return. He’s broke, meek, and lonely,...

In a televised statement delivered Tuesday at the Capitol, McCarthy cited allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption,” against Biden that warranted “further investigation by the House of Representatives.

One of the latest thrillers to hit the ever-changing digital carousel over on Netflix is a new take on an old classic called "River Wild." Currently one of the most viewed releases on the streamer, the adventure film sends viewers hurtling down treacherous whitewater rapids in a fairly straightforward story of survivalist horror. Inspired by director Curtis Hanson's "The River Wild" starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon, this most recent version mostly jettisons the character dynamics of the original 1994 film in favor of the slightly more campy teens-in-peril trope.
Unless you consider "Deliverance" to be horror adjacent (and there are plenty of reasons why that's justifiable), there is a serious drought in the number of genre films offering up high stake thrills taking place on a whitewater rafting trip gone horribly awry. "River Wild" may not necessarily live up to the original, but it does offer up another chance...

The first image of Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze in the Toxic Avenger reboot has been released. The film is a spiritual reimagining of the 1984 Troma cult classic, following a terminally ill man who becomes a deformed superhero after falling into toxic waste. Director Macon Blair has previously teased that the movie will appeal both to Troma fans and those unfamiliar with the studio and Toxic Avenger.
The first Toxic Avenger reboot image has been released, showing Peter Dinklage ready for action as Winston Gooze. Directed by Macon Blair, the upcoming film serves as a reimagining of the 1984 cult classic of the same name. The original film follows a janitor who is transformed into a disfigured crime-fighting superhero after falling into a vat of toxic waste, and Blair's reboot will seemingly follow in this same vein.
Now, Bloody Disgusting has unveiled the first image from The Toxic Avenger, revealing Dinklage's look as the titular hero.

Where to Watch Powered by "River Wild" is a new take on the 1994 film, not a remake or reboot, according to the team behind the production. It is a standalone sequel set in the "universe" of the original. The 2023 version of "River Wild" introduces original characters and a new setting in Hungary, differing from the 1994 film's Idaho setting and characters. The new film focuses on the inner dynamics and tensions of a group of siblings and their childhood friend, creating a more intimate and gritty story set in an exciting river adventure.

It’s Day 5 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 78 of the WGA strike.
Writers and actors on strike simultaneously for the first time in more than 60 years fanned out across Manhattan on Tuesday morning with renewed demands for better pay, more job security and limits on the use of artificial intelligence in film and television.
The Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA ran picket lines at four locations near the offices of NBCUniversal, Paramount, Amazon, HBO, Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. WGA marchers said they welcomed SAG-AFTRA members joining them on strike as of Friday, after months of backing the Writers Guild in its dispute with the major film and television production companies.
“It does feel different,” writer, comedian and WGA East member Josh Gondelman said outside NBCUniversal headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. “It’s really heartening to have this infusion of energy and the same righteous anger out on the lines that we had.
