Skynet is making its return: the trailer for the Netflix animated series “Terminator Zero” has been revealed.

The series follows the aftermath of Skynet, an AI being, gaining consciousness and waging its war against humanity in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” It becomes self-aware on Aug. 29, 1997, after which a war rages on for decades.

“Terminator Zero” is set in 2022 and follows a soldier, Eiko (Rosario Dawson), who is sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She journeys back to 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee (André Holland), who is working on another AI system, Kokono (Sonoya Mizuno) to compete with Skynet. Although it exists in the Terminator universe, it centers entirely around new characters.

The trailer sees Lee attempting to save the Earth from Skynet, while being hunted down by an assassin from the future.

Gael Garcia Bernal plays Saúl Armendáriz, a struggling amateur luchador who reinvented himself as a flamboyant wrestler named Cassandro. He was an “exotico”, which was a stereotypically gay class of wrestler that was typically demolished to the delight of homophobic audiences. But, Cassandro was different. His winning personality and physical prowess won over his audiences, and he became something that was almost unheard of in Mexico, an exotico who won matches.

It’s an excellent role for Bernal, who gets a juicy role he can sink his teeth into. The character allows him to show his flair for comedy, his psychical prowess in the well-choreographed wrestling scenes, and heartfelt poignancy at times too. Much of the movie...

Cassandro, writer/director Roger Ross Williams’ joyous celebration of the indomitable spirit of Saúl Armendáriz, is the perfect vehicle to introduce the Lucha Libre world and its groundbreaking, barrier-busting gay star to a wider audience.

The film catches up with Saúl (played by Gael García Bernal) in the 1980s when he’s wrestling as designated loser El Topo (which translates to The Mole). Saúl’s in a rut, and the only way out is to transform into an exótico. But that transformation would require him to incorporate his homosexuality into a character in front of a large audience that includes his homophobic estranged father. It would also mean he’d be forced to continue to lose since the wrestling world – both in the ring and in the stands – doesn’t embrace homosexuals. Gay wrestlers are mocked and ridiculed and subjected to disgusting sexual slurs.

Armendáriz turned up to the premiere in a flashy ensemble fit for both the ring and the red carpet — a multi-colored leotard, bedazzled tights and a blue satin jacket with dramatic train. Armendáriz, who suffered a stroke that has left him with limited movement on one side of his body and the ability to only string together short sentences, was overjoyed and clearly emotional upon seeing Bernal and the filmmaker.

Gael García Bernal nails his best role in years, giving a performance steeped in cheeky humor, resilience and radical self-belief — not to mention some amazingly nimble moves — as groundbreaking lucha libre wrestler Saúl Armendáriz in Cassandro. Seasoned documentarian Roger Ross Williams, who profiled Armendáriz in 2016 for the Amazon series The New Yorker Presents, makes an assured transition into narrative features with this entertaining biopic, which doubles as a gorgeous depiction of mother-son love and an exhilarating exploration of fearless queer identity in a macho environment.

While Williams (Life, Animated) and co-screenwriter David Teague (who adapted Ta-Nehesi Coates’ Between the World and Me for HBO) slightly fumble the ending, this is a film with enormous heart, vivid immersion into its culturally specific milieu and celebratory admiration for its flamboyant subject, images of whom both in and out of the ring grace the end credits. So far nearly all the 2023 Sundance Film Festival films I have seen are based on true stories, from a teacher in Radical, to a gay single father in San Francisco circa ’70s and ’80s in Fairyland, to Michael J. Fox as himself, and now yet another iconic character gets his story told on the big screen. World Premiering at Sundance tonight is Cassandro, a wild story of the first openly gay wrestler in the ultra macho sport of Mexico’s Lucha Libre.

Although the Lucha Libre and their outragous contingent known as the Exotico is a well-known in Mexico, it is not so well known outside of the country. That is about to change thanks to this film which represents the narrative feature film debut of Oscar-winning documentarian Roger Ross Williams (Life Animated), who became fascinated with the life of famed wrestler Saul Armendariz — aka Cassandro — when he made a short docu on his life.

Netflix had a big year in 2022, surpassing more than 223 million paid streaming subscribers globally, and there’s plenty on tap in 2023 to be excited about — including new seasons of “You” and “Shadow and Bone.”

However, the streamer also saw its first subscriber loss in over a decade in its second quarter in April, prompting massive budget cuts and the loss of multiple TV projects over the course of this year.

The series followed cousins Erik (played by J.J. Soria), Ana (Karrie Martin Lachney) and Chris (Carlos Santos) chasing the American Dream while facing struggles with their neighborhood, immigrant grandfather and family-owned taco shop.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched Season 2 of “Gentefied,” streaming now on Netflix.

When “Gentefied” co-creator Marvin Lemus was a teenager, he testified on his undocumented mother’s behalf so that she could receive her green card. Decades later, under the administration of President Donald Trump, he found himself “terrified” that she’d be ripped away from him.

“I was hearing all of these stories that even green card holders were getting taken by Ice and sometimes being held for long periods of time,” Lemus tells Variety.

After spending a long time “pestering her to get her citizenship,” she finally did — while Lemus was breaking the second season of his Netflix series. “It was such an emotional release,” he recalls. “I was just so used to this being a part of my life — knowing that my mom’s status wasn’t always stable or safe or meant security.

It’s been over a year since audiences met the Morales clan and their Boyle Heights, Los Angeles taco shop, Mama Fina’s. At the end of Season 1, the group knew that Mama Fina’s was on death’s door, set to be bought out by a gentrifying white woman interested in turning it into a pop-up shop. On top of that, family patriarch Casimiro, aka Pop (Joaquín Cosio), had been picked up on a routine traffic violation and was being detained by Ice. With so much tension built up, creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez could have made this a heavily dramatized season. And it is, no doubt, but “Gentefied” always retains the sense of heart and community that made Season 1 so special.

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has unveiled a new image from his DC sequel, which is scheduled to hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6.

“Squad Undercover in Corto Maltese: Ratcatcher 2, The Thinker, Bloodsport, & Polka Dot Man in #TheSuicideSquad,” read the caption for the pic, which he shared on Instagram.

In his post, Gunn is referring to characters played by Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Idris Elba and David Dastmalchian, respectively.

The film, which Gunn also wrote, follows an assortment of supervillains and criminals from Belle Reve prison, as they’re sent to the island of Corto Maltese, as part of the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X.

One of the year’s biggest entertainment X factors is James Gunn’s take on Suicide Squad. Of course, the first film, from David Ayer, was met with a tepid at best reaction, but Gunn coming aboard to the follow-up piqued most folks’ curiosity.
