A decidedly coy Michael Mann said little about Heat 2, his follow-up film to the 1995 crime drama Heat that starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, while attending the Red Sea Film Festival on Sunday.
“The next (movie) I’d like to do is Heat 2,” Mann reiterated in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, during an informal conversation in Old City Al Balad after an earlier screening of Heat at the festival. He was careful to reveal little about the screenplay for the project, which Mann has reportedly set up at Warner Bros. “It has to be finished really soon.”
The Heat sequel has been on the back burner for some time now, but Mann breathed new life into the project with his 2022 crime novel Heat 2, co-written by the 81-year-old director and author Meg Gardiner, which acts as both a prequel and a sequel to Mann’s 1995 crime film classic. The book became a No.

“As the founder and director of the EnergaCAMERIMAGE film festival, I was very honored to have Adam Driver as our guest at the festival. “What was so interesting to me about it was the compression of all the dynamics of these tempestuous lives in three months,” explained director Michael Mann about what drew him to the true story in “Ferrari.” And “the more specific one got into that culture and these people and their psyche, I think the more universal the whole picture became.” “Ferrari” was selected as the closing night film at the 61st New York Film Festival, which concluded on October 15. The 61st annual New York Film Festival concluded on Friday night with the North American premiere of Michael Mann’s “Ferrari.”

“The mindset of a racer was something we talked about,” Driver said of his preparation with Mann for the Enzo Ferrari biopic. “There’s this prolonged, myopic focus that needs to be sustained until the race is over and you’re constantly dealing with what’s happening in the moment… With a race, there’s always potential danger.”

Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Michael Mann and more of the cast and crew of Ferrari vroomed their way onto the red carpet on Friday for the closing night of the 61st annual New York Film Festival.
The film brings to the big screen a few difficult months of Enzo Ferrari’s (Driver) life, as he balances two families and his family’s company finds itself on the brink of going bankrupt.
For the longest time, Mann, the filmmaker behind films like The Insider and The Last of the Mohicans, felt the movie would be impossible to make because Formula 1 wasn’t always appreciated in the United States. But, in 2019, when Netflix released Formula 1: Drive to Survive, a docuseries about the high-octane sport, that changed. Now, the U.S. is one of the biggest Formula 1 venues in the world.
“This is not a racing movie,” Mann told The Hollywood Reporter.

The SAG-AFTRA strike, a wild card throughout the fall festival season, has created a closing stretch of the New York Film Festival unlike many (any?) of its 60 previous editions.
The final NYFF press conference this morning featured Ferrari cast members Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Gabriel Leone alongside writer-director Michael Mann discussing the Closing Night selection.
The presence of talent onstage at Walter Reade Theater, thanks to an interim agreement for publicity obtained by distributor Neon before the film’s August 31 world premiere in Venice, offered a welcome dose of the familiar. Not only was the stage picture a recognizable one, but the themes of the conversation all covered well-established terrain. Topics included the film’s production in Italy, Mann’s decades-long quest to get it made and the cast’s exhaustive research.
Cruz said her character, Laura Ferrari, “was even more involved [in the auto company] than we see here.

Penélope Cruz is set to star as Olga, a writer forced to give up her artistic ambitions when her husband suddenly leaves her and their two young daughters, in Isabel Coixet’s English-language adaptation of Italian author Elena Ferrante’s “The Days of Abandonment.”

In Modena, everyone is losing––the football club, the women, the Ferraris. It’s the spring of 1957, and ex-racer-turned-entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver), aka Il Commendatore, carries the weight of the city on his shoulders. And much more: the future of his 10-year-old company, his marriage, his affair, his bank account, his unrecognized son, and his dignity––to name the important things.
Maserati, Jaguar, and the rest have left Ferrari in the dust in recent competition. His staff badmouths him in the local paper like he won’t read it the next morning and fire their ass the second he walks into the factory. His drivers are dropping like flies, Enzo’s breakneck ethic of racing a death warrant for anyone crazy enough to drive for him. In short, Il Commendatore is a catalyst for disaster.

Adam Driver, Patrick Dempsey and Michael Mann gave an octane boost of star power to the 80th Venice Film Festival Thursday night, with their car racer biopic Ferrari welcomed warmly by the Lido audience.
Driver plays the legendary Italian car maker Enzo Ferrari in the period drama, which co-stars Penélope Cruz as his wife Laura Ferrari and Shailene Woodley as Ferrari’s mistress and the mother of his second son, Pierro.
Pierro Ferrari was in the audience Thursday night, enjoying the raptous reception from the Venice crowd, which gave the film a good seven minute standing ovation, with Driver obviously moved by the response.

Michael Mann’s long-gestating drama, Ferrari, peels into the Venice Film Festival this afternoon, and reviews are already leaving the starting line. The film, based on motorsports journalist Brock Yates’ biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Car, The Races, The Machine, focuses on a portion of the auto magnate’s storied career, with Adam Driver commanding the screen as Enzo. Instead of following the world-famous figure from the start of his journey, Ferarri revolves around the time when the Italian auto manufacturer was in dire straights, and Enzo was juggling two relationships between his wife, Laura Ferrari (played by Penélope Cruz), and his mistress, Lina Lardi (Shailene Woodley).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mann’s Ferrari is “as unapologetically masculine as anything Mann has made and also as visceral.” The outlet says Mann does an admirable job of balancing Enzo’s crisis with exhilarating racing scenes that give the film...

New films by top U.S. directors including David Fincher, Sofia Coppola, Ava DuVernay, Michael Mann, Bradley Cooper and Wes Anderson will be launching from the Venice Film Festival alongside a robust roster of European, Latin American and Asian auteurs, in a clear sign that disruption caused by two ongoing labor strikes in Hollywood is less than some expected.
Though Venice was forced a few days ago to pull its originally planned opener, Zendaya-starrer “Challengers,” due to promotional complications from the SAG-AFTRA strike, the fest’s complete lineup, announced on Tuesday, has certainly not suffered a mass exodus of Hollywood titles. On the contrary, the Lido’s firepower as an awards season pistol seems to have outgunned the probable scarcity of stars that will be on the red carpet for U.S. films, though even this aspect remains to be seen.

Roughly a month before Venice Film Festival’s 2023 lineup announcement, the buzz around the competition is heating up with several star-studded films by heavyweight directors in the mix, including Pablo Larrain (“El Conde”), Michael Mann (“Ferrari“), Sofia Coppola (“Priscilla“), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”) and Michel Franco (“Memory”).
These titles are believed to have been officially invited to the Lido in competition, according to sources.
Larraín’s follow-up to “Spencer,” “El Conde” depicts dictator Augusto Pinochet as a Vampire with a cast led by Chilean star Alfredo Castro.
Another film with a genre element, Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” is a surrealist science-fiction romance based on an adaptation of Alasdair Grey’s novel of the same name, and starring Emma Stone as Belle Baxter, a Frankenstein-like woman who is brought back to life after her brain is replaced with that of her unborn child. Stone stars opposite Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Christopher Abbott and Margaret Qualley.

Michael Mann has been keeping busy lately. He has recently brought the series Tokyo Vice to HBO and directed the pilot episode. He also released a sequel to one of his most successful movies, Heat, in book form, and he announced earlier this summer that filming had gone underway for his new movie about Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari will be his first feature film since 2015’s cyber-thriller, Blackhat.
The Film Stage brings us the first look at Adam Driver’s interpretation of Enzo Ferrari in Mann’s new movie. Driver (who may be in for a bevy of jokes due to the pun of his name) will be joined by Penélope Cruz as Laura Ferrari, Shailene Woodley as Lina Lardi, Patrick Dempsey as racing car driver Piero Taruffi, Jack O’Connell as racing car driver Peter Collins, Sarah Gadon as Linda Christian, and Gabriel Leone as Fon De Portago.

As I work my way through Michael Mann’s Heat 2 (in deliciously gruff audiobook form), it’s a great time to be a fan of the director. Following Tokyo Vice earlier this year, his recent novel, and a 4K release of his 1995 crime masterpiece, he’s in production on Ferrari, his first film since 2015’s Blackhat, on location in Italy. As the shoot continues, the first images have now arrived, which can be seen above and below.
The cast features Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, Penélope Cruz as Laura Ferrari, Shailene Woodley as Lina Lardi, Patrick Dempsey as racing car driver Piero Taruffi, Jack O’Connell as racing car driver Peter Collins, Sarah Gadon as Linda Christian, and Gabriel Leone as Fon De Portago.
Scripted by Troy Kennedy Martin (The Italian Job) and Mann, based on Brock Yates’ book, Enzo Ferrari – The Man and the Machine, a fall 2023 theatrical release is planned,...
