Film-maker joins union leaders demanding transparency in 1972 builders' strike case that saw Ricky Tomlinson imprisoned
Film-maker Ken Loach joined union leaders and actor Ricky Tomlinson today to step up the pressure on the government to release documents relating to the case of 24 building workers arrested four decades ago after taking part in a strike.
Loach said the case, which saw Tomlinson imprisoned in 1972, was one of the "great causes of our time".
"It is an absolutely clear case so see let's see the strength of the trade union movement mobilised in the way it can be mobilised," he told a packed meeting in Westminster on Wednesday.
Earlier this week it emerged that Chris Grayling, the justice secretary, had told surviving members of the "Shrewsbury 24" that documents relating to the case will be withheld for a further 10 years because of national security concerns. The ban will be reviewed again in 2021.

This past week, Fast Company visited Tesla Motors headquarters for a look at the automaker's progress on its first mass-market vehicle, the Model S electric sedan. We had the chance to see the Model S Alpha testing fleet, see some of the vehicle's innards, and speak with Jb Straubel, Tesla's Cto as well as Peter Rawlinson, VP of Engineering (we also spoke with Rawlinson at January's Detroit Auto Show). Here's what we learned.
The Battery Pack
The Model S's ultra-light battery pack (Tesla won't say exactly how light) can be swapped out in minutes with the right machinery. That means the pack could in the future be compatible with Better Place's automated battery swap stations. There are around 7,000 cells in the lithium-ion pack, which has a 10 year life span. The pack provides the Model S with up to a 300 mile range--and the whole thing can be recharged in just 45 minutes.

Tesla only has one vehicle model on the road--the flashy Roadster Ev--but that hasn't stopped the automaker from announcing a number of vehicles to be released in the coming years. After Tesla releases the Model S electric sedan next year, the startup plans to release the Model X, a crossover vehicle based on the same architecture as the Model S. And according to Car and Driver, the newest Tesla model will be revealed at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
As Tesla engineer Peter Rawlinson explained to us at last month's Detroit Auto Show, the $57,000 Model S is a platform for the Tesla brand, which means it will lead to multiple spin-off vehicles, starting with the Model X. We assume that the Model X will share some of the architecture as the Model S, including an aluminum skin and batteries located under the floor. The vehicle will be released in 2014 or 2015.

What does $57,000 of electric-car engineering look like?
Last week, we had the chance to chat with Peter Rawlinson, Tesla's VP of engineering, about the upcoming Model S electric sedan. Now we have footage of the $57,000 vehicle on the streets. As the video below demonstrates, the car can really perform.
Expect more clips in the near future--this is just the alpha version of the vehicle. A beta version will go into testing before the Model S is released in mid-2012.

Last week, Tesla released a series of short videos detailing the under-the-hood specs of the upcoming Model S electric sedan. Yesterday we had the chance to sit down with Peter Rawlinson, the narrator of the aforementioned videos, and Tesla's VP of engineering, at the Detroit Auto Show. We had to know: Why is Tesla spending so much time talking up its engineering credentials?
It all comes down to timing, according to Rawlinson. The alpha prototype for the 2012 Model S (pictured, in part, above), a version of the vehicle that undergoes extreme testing conditions, just finished its first test run. So Tesla figured it was time to show off the engineering prowess of the Tesla team in Detroit--that, and the automaker doesn't have any new models to exhibit. Unlike other automakers that greenwash their concept vehicles, you "can't fake" the kind of engineering unveiling offered by Tesla at the auto show,...

Tesla's Model S sedan, set to be released next year, is the long-awaited follow-up to the perennial electric vehicle startup's slick Roadster sportscar. This week, Tesla attempted to whet our appetites for the $57,400 electric sedan with a series of videos detailing the nuts and bolts of the vehicle's engineering. Here's what we learned.
According to Tesla chief engineer Peter Rawlinson (the video narrator), the vehicle body is made up of aluminum, dual-phase steel, and boron steel. Ninety eight percent of the unibody's (a term for vehicle shell without an interior or drivetrain) weight consist of aluminum, an ultra-light material. Tesla hopes that the vehicle's overall eight will hover somewhere around 4,000 pounds.
The vehicle's series of cooling system and radiators keeps the batteries at a controlled temperature, while condensers keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature.
The Model S also features what Rawlinson calls "a multi-link aluminum-intensive rear suspension" that has...

Here's more info on "Ondine" from Yahoo:
Syracuse is a simple fisherman who catches a beautiful and mysterious woman in his trawler's nets. The woman seems to be dead, but then she comes alive before Syracuse's eyes and he thinks he may be seeing things. However, with the help of his ailing, yet irrepressible daughter, Annie, he comes to believe that the fantastical might be possible and that the woman (Ondine) might be a myth come true. Adolescence can be a crazy time. Focus Features' latest film shows exactly how true that statement can be.
Focus has announced plans to start production on "It's Kind of a Funny Story," a movie by filmmaking team Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, adapted from Ned Vizzini's novel of the same name. Production - overseen by Misher Films' Kevin Misher and Wayfare Entertainment's Ben Browning, Michael Maher and Peter Rawlinson - will begin in early December in New York. Major casting for the project has also begun. Among the actors already attached are Keir Gilchrist, Emma Roberts, Zach Galifianakis, Lauren Graham, Jim Gaffigan, Zoe Kravitz, Viola Davis and Aasif Mandvi.
The story follows Gilchrist as 16-year-old Craig, who decides to get away from his hectic teenage life and his parents (Graham, Gaffigan) by committing himself to a mental health clinic, only to wind up in the adult ward rather than the children's.
