In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: Fran Perea's Carnaval, directed by Ălex de la Iglesia. Ălex de la Iglesia's sole music video, for Fran Perea's Carnaval, seems fitting almost to the extent of self-parody. If any word would describe a lot of De la Iglesia's movies, it's carnivalesque. The Last Circus has clown characters, Witching and Bitching has a heist in weird costumes (there is a Jesus bank robber and a Spongebob bank robber) and pagan parties, and Veneciafrenia is a slasher based on bal masques in Venice. There is a sense of excess to the films of De la Iglesia, with a focus on the grotesques, caricatures and silliness. Costumes, circusses,...

At one of its increasingly regular presentations, on Thursday Netflix Spain unveiled seven new projects including âIf Only,â a Spanish adaptation of the Netflix Turkish original canceled before shooting by Turkish authorities.
Where once Netflix would host its presentations early in the year and announce its ambitions for the next 12 months, the platformâs original Spanish programming pipeline has grown to an extent that Thursdayâs showcase only covers the next few months and hinted at plenty more to come in late 2021.
In both level and volume of production, the dayâs announcements confirm Netflix as one of if not the, foremost investors in original Spanish series and movies, at the same as its talent pool is expanding to include ever more of the principal producers in Spain. New Netflix originals are now being produced by now-regular partners Nostromo, producers of âThe Minions of Midasâ; âĂliteâ producers Zeta Studios; âMoney Heist...

GĂTEBORG, Sweden: âAll the Sinsââ Finnish co-writers and creators Mika Ronkainen and Merja Aakko, winners of last yearâs Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize for outstanding Nordic screenplay, are developing for Mrk Matila Röhr Productions an adoption drama set between Finland and Guatemala.

When a journalist friend starts to ask questions about the sonâs biological parents, the mystery threatens to come to light.
Producer Ilkka MatilĂ€ said that Finnish public broadcaster Yle has ordered the concept from the writing duo. Heâs now looking for a âpotential co-production partner who could facilitate the Guatemala shoot.â

Madrid â Following on 2019 MipTV hit âInvisible Heroes,â set in 1973 Chile, âThe Paradiseâ marks the second time in under 12 months that Finnish public broadcaster Yle has reached out to set â and co-produce â a primetime drama in the Spanish-speaking world.
Neither are commonplace dramas. Produced by Finlandâs Mrp Matila Röhr Productions, behind âAll the Sins,â winner of the 2019 Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize, âThe Paradiseâ begins with a softly-sung song, ·âViento, viento de la montañaâ and aerial shots of a caravan wending its way through low-wooded sierra to Fuengirola, an enclave on Spainâs sun-kissed Costa del Sol. âIâm so happy,â a young wife says in Finnish to her husband wo drives the caravan as they embrace, surveying Fuengirola below them.
Yet, in its first two episodes at least, âThe Paradiseâ marks two other peopleâs story of renewal: Hilkka MĂ€ntymĂ€ki, a crime detective in sub-Arctic city of Oulu,...

Spanish director dies following a stroke: Best known for his nearly two hundred underground, "exploitation" films "I think I was born because my father and my mother had sex ... ." Nope, that has nothing to do with the anti-censorship lectured delivered by Oz the Great and Powerful and Interior. Leather Bar's James Franco online. The words above were uttered by another Franco, a Spaniard. No, not the foaming-at-the-mouth right-wing military ruler Francisco Franco, but multitasking filmmaker JesĂșs Franco, aka Jess Franco aka dozens of other aliases, including those in honor of jazz performers Clifford Brown and James P. Johnson. His oeuvre included about 200 films, among them The White Slave, The Sexual History of O, Macumba Sexual, , Emmanuelle Exposed, Vampyros Lesbos, The Mistresses of Dr. Jekyll, and White Cannibal Queen. The director died today in Malaga, a city in southern Spain, after suffering a stroke. According to reports, he had never truly...

Spain's Globomedia is getting behind Luna, el misterio de Calenda (Moon), a 19th-century werewolf thriller that toplines Belen Rueda (The Orphanage), one of Spain's biggest box office draws, as a judge sent to investigate mysterious occurrences in the benighted village of Calenda, reports Variety. Globomedia's new series are high concept and break new ground for the local biz -- for example, Spain's never had a werewolf series -- and mix genres -- Moon has a teen romance story strand, with the judge's daughter falling for a local civil guard officer (Fran Perea). The series will be budgeted north of Spain's average Euros 500,000 ($688,000) an episode, though they'll stop short of "Eagle's" $1 million per episode.

The Orphanage and Julia's Eyes star Belen Rueda will continue her genre streak with Spain's Moon . Entitled Luna, el misterio de Calenda , Variety says the project is set in the 19th century and finds Rueda playing a judge who is sent to a small village to investigate "mysterious occurrences." Moon is envisioned as a television series, which is an ambitious endeavor for the country which has never had werewolf-themed television fare. Fran Perea will co-star as the village's civil guard officer. Rueda recently made headlines when she was attached to Oriol Paulo's Spanish thriller The Body .

Weâre here to continue our little festival chat and represent another title In Competition for the Golden Lion statue, this year, at 67th Venice Film Festival.
Balada triste de trompeta or A Sad Trumpet Ballad is the movie that comes from Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia, and itâs already been described as the comedy that follows two circus clowns, but itâs definitely more than just a comedyâŠ.
Hereâs the A Sad Trumpet Ballad synopsis: ââŠ1937. The circus monkeys scream wildly inside their cage while, outside, men kill and die in another circus: the Spanish Civil War.
The Stupid Clown, recruited against his will by the Militia, ends up carrying out a bloodbath with a machete against the National soldiers while still wearing his costume.
And so starts this eventful adventure in which Javier and Sergio, two terrifyingly disfigured clowns, fight to the death for the ambiguous...

#6. Balada Triste (The Last Circus) Director: Ălex de la Iglesia Cast: Antonio de la Torre, Carlos Areces, Carolina Bang, Santiago Segura, Fernando GuillĂ©n Cuervo, Fran Perea, Sancho Gracia Distributor: Magnolia Pictures Buzz: To be unveiled on the Lido and to be presented in San Sebastian after Tiff, things are certainly looking good for this twisted, dark comedy especially if Magnolia Pictures, a distributor who usually jumps on finished films, bought the pic still unfinished. If you're not sold on the sequences below, then let the buzz from Venice do the convincing. The Gist: Ălex de la Iglesia's genius for dark humour is at its most eloquent in his latest parody about the Spanish Civil War. Two clowns attack and disfigure one another in jealous rages over a beautiful dancer. In the name of love, they destroy the very object of their affection. Tiff Schedule: Tuesday September 14 9:45:00 Pm...
